Dicky Blighter
...and replace with MX5 ones - as I'm now on to tidying up the inside and bodywork decided to get rid of existing seats and replace with something a bit more comfy.Passenger seat has had it and bites your bum.Drivers seat looks OKBut losing lots of foam and prety rotten:

Dicky Blighter
Looks like I can use existing rear mounting points and drill new holes in floor for front fixings.Much later and lots of fiddling later Finally got the first seat in. Have to pack up rear mounts by 15mm or seat hits floor pan, really difficult to get to front mount as can't slide seat back far enough.
Dicky Blighter
Repeat for drivers side - you need to be quite short to see through the windscreen as you do sit a lot higher Job Jobbed - for now - intend to improve fixing points and strengthen and may need to change seat belts as these ones rub on the sides of the seat too much
Dicky Blighter
That was hard work - total time spent about 6 and total cost £49.00 (£50 for the seats less the pound coin I found under the passenger seat). They are a very tight fit and everything has to be positioned just right, got about 2 inches fore and aft adjustment but can recline the seats quite a lot to give comfortable driving position. You do sit a lot higher, hood goes up ok but my head is just about touching the roof. The universal seat belts I'm using aren't vey well positioned as they get caught between hood frame and seats when hood is down. Can't at first site do a lot about this so may have to change the belts for ones where the inertia reel is at base of B pillar or go back to fixed belts.A lot more comfortable though haven't had a chance to drive it yet as needed beer to finish the job this evening :)
lavamatrix
haha just drinking a beer myself after spending the day with my girl. New seats look great! Nice work.
GT6 M
Mr Blighter, can you no get the gear box side panels in !!!!i been looking at this, but feel they wont go in, although you and others have done it!!the ones in my MX, just seem too bigg in the front squab side bolster area to allow them to go forwards, put a pic up fron above would you pleaseohhhh, how heavey are these things, rgds Marcus
Dicky Blighter
Marcus - will do you a picture from above tomorrow if it's not raining - 'gearbox side panels'? do you mean the padded knee pad things? I haven't got them but looks like they would fit as you cant get the front of the seat even level with the crossmember. These seats are from a Mk1 MX5 without the seat belt stalks attached to the seat - Mk2 might just fit, anything newer definitely won't. Odd thing I found though - centre to centre of runners on passenger seat is 330mm - drivers seat is 340mm and layout of mounting points is different. They are suprisingly light, probably no more than standard seats, when I take them out again to finish mounts and trim the cills etc. I'll weigh them for you. Dicky Blighter
Update after 2 days using them:Cons:1. You do sit a lot higher - I'm just under 6 foot but with short legs and long upper body so my eyeline is a fraction under the sun visor with it flipped right up.2. Seat belt keeps getting caught between hood frame and headrest.3. Very limited fore and aft movement.4. With hood up only about my hair touches the roof leading to a touch of St Elmos Fire evey time you get out of the car.5. Seats are cloth - previous owner must have had a dog as hot humid weather and hood left up overnight produces 'interesting' smellPros:1. Sunvisors got in the way and never used them, now contributing to landfill.2. Needed new seat belts anyway.3. I'm the only one that drives it, unfortunately my 20 year old daughter who wants to go on the insurance can't get the seat far enough forward ;D ;D4. Hair cut is overdue.5. Got loads of Autoglym upholstery cleaner and a large can of Fabreze - no more welding my skin to the vinyl after parking in the sun.Seriously though they are very comfortable and hold you better, driving position is different and takes some getting used to though.Suprising how much noise it cuts down, can almost hear the radio, these seats have the zip up head rests so can add speakers to them if I want.Still need to tweak mountings a bit - tempted to bin the runners entirely and make fixed position mounts, they are only held on with 4 bolts and should be able to drop the height by 20-40 mm giving better driving position. May even be able to fit to runners from standard seats - will have to look in to that one.
don cook1
I used original floor holes in my GT6, did as you did with the rear mounts but fitted a small extension piece so runners could fit further forward. At the front I modified the mounting holes as they are offset, rather than cutting them off. I have reasonable front/aft adjustment. Very comfortable seats but forget about headrest speakers...need some sort if sounding board i.e. a door!Don't have any trouble with height and for long distance driving they are perfect. And they look good too...particularly in the MK3...modern looks!
Fizzy
have you already binned your sunvisors ? if not, i'd be interested in them for a project. let me know.
GT6 M
Dickie, yes the knee pad s,and the centre bit,and the handbrake cover,on measuring the seats I got in MX, they just seem toooooo wide, Maybe does no help with extra sound proofing on them !!!the original seat, the seat front is squashed up agaist the pads when in driving positonso this why I worrying about the MX 1,sin the mean time , have bought a tin of ..Foam Worm Killer ... ;) ;) ;)that should stop the little Blighters, [any relation to you,!! :) ] frae eating me foam awayMarcus
