Finally got round to putting the seats in I got,
boy, are they a tight  fit,
1,    actually scrapes the roof when full up,
2,    also touches the rear hinge cover when reet back
3,    cant adjust the seat when its in, , got some thing in mind for that,
4,    bolt holes no where near the originals, as some folk say.
5,    only got 2 inch forad an aft move ment
6,    going to have to cut me door arm rests doon
7,    side bolsters catch the side o the door pillar
8,    sits well high
9,    will have to alter the seat belt end, to match the MX one
10,  cannot access rear mounts when seats in,
11,  fronts are not that bad to get at
12,  Actually  NOT as comfy as the originals, hard, high, slippy,
13,  1,inch frae me heed to roof, and I aint got no lining in !!!
14,  actually welded nuts into the big hole on the runners,  so can fit frae under neath
15,  seat cant come as far forad, as original, due to adjusting arm
16,  chopped pegs off, and straightened the runners up to level
17,  cut a small vee in one side runner to get it up level
18,  cut the recline cover back an inch
19,  saets wont go back cos of the curve in the floor
20,  needs wired up for the heaters in back and base of seats.

Just seem to be sitting very close to the roof, and looking at the screen top,!!!
and im only of slim build, so dont no how folk bigger than me actually fit in the car with them in,   [ gt 6 ]
has any one else actually welded nuts to the runners to mount them,!!just seemed the easiest way to  get at them.

will bung some pics up the morrow,

Marcus

i dont get why you have had so much trouble, i have some mx 5 seats from a 1998 mx 5  - with speakers in headrests etc and they went into my gt6 mk2 lovely, i admit i did have to drill new holes in the floorpan for the back holes but otherwise fit great, they are adjustable forward and back by about 4 inches, on original subframes too, i can recline them fully too  so not sure why you've had so much trouble, im 6 ft 2 and i'd say medium build and i can get in and out fine with them, i dont have the seat up bolt right or anything, the back is led back just slightly but my head is still clear from the headlining etc by about an inch!!! what year mx seats are they, different years can have different fits!! ;)

Seat are MK 2.5 limited Edition High backs,  just took some pics of the drivers side work done ,
to be honest, no really too keen on the driving position,  just seem too far up, not snuggggleee down like the originals [ some bodee has got a good deal there, ;) ;) ]

I actually used 4 diff holes, as the holes just would not align up at all,  and as said befoer, made them to come out from under neath,  cos its so much easier to get at the bolts.

Am in two minds as to take the seat belt holder off,and get a stalk to go into the original holes,
jury is still oot on this at the moment.

0, got to take spike off,

1,

2, seat look the same height,  but the actuall squab area is alot lower on the originals

3, original runners befoer mods

4,  rear driver after mods

5, did the passenger side diff, as it was found that I need no have done the above mod, :-/

slit, and weld up, and fits ok

6, nuts welded into the holes in the runners, so can attach em frae under neath, cos the seats wont tilt, or the the base wont come off,  its the only way I could see to fit them easily

7, passenger seat, not quite full back, but when it goes back, it just scrapes the tail gate hinge cover

8, drivers seat, at drive position, aboot 1/2 inch clearance, and this is with oot any head lining, as the carpet ont roof is straight onto it, so no droop at all there,  when sitting straight up, the seat just touches the roof.
If the headlining was in, then it will no have fitted,

so as you ladds can see, no an easy fit, and no a great driving position either

will have to have a good close look at some of you lot in these,
cos I thinks you lot will be sitting at some sort of jaunty angle, to get the position right.

and if any one is ..lets say,got a well padded Arsch End..  then you be into the roof. :-/ :-/  As it is noo, I got 1/2 inch clearance in my drive position,
so a helmet a no no.

Tom, actually did a size comarison with the ones in my own MX, 1998/99 MK2, and they are a little narrower in the bolsters but are still too wide really.
the other are  with take off head rest , so are no as high.

will also need to sort the tilt adjuster out, as it cant be got at

One other niggling thing with these seats,
I need to put a higher up elbow /lower arm,  rest  on to the hand brake cover,
as my arm is too low when sitting in the seat, cos im sitting too high now,  :-/ :-/

any one else found this out, :-/ :-/

I based the fitting of my MX5 seats on a couple of American websites (not sure which ones). I cut off the rear feet by drilling out the two big rivets that are shown on Marcus' photos and added a short bar and drilled through these to the original holes. On the front I elongated the holes to line up...the front feet on one side are offset otherwise they would line up with original holes.

Tight fit but I can still use the backrest lever and have two or so inches on fore and aft adjustment. Good clearance between top of headrest and roof-lining. They're comfortable, cloth and look the part. I found the headrest speakers useless when on the move. I'm 6' and have a girth that is manly.

I only fitted mine because of the cost of the replacement foam; to many £££££££sss!!

Don, these are higher than yours,  thats why they toouch the roof,
yip 2 inch move ment all i got too,   But going to investigate the lower inside bit on the seat, as I may be able to  modify it,to get another inch
an inch is  ALOTT, when you no got much to start with, ;) ;)

can you get at the fixing bolts ok,!!!

Bob,  you no give up doo ye,  :P :P :P
but they may no let the roof go up, as they are high,  39 inches  frae runner bottoms ,to seat top.

the Ladds on the MX site say, these were a Limited Edition fitment, so maybe thats why they diff to all others,!!

Look at when I sat in them mate, the back rest is no higher than my head and I fit in my car without my head on the roof! I would gladly fit em.

Its your car mate and that headlining of yours its 4 inch thick (carpet) remove the headlining and it wont hit the roof ;)

  • 2 weeks later...

been at the seats, again, still not happy with em,
but managed to sort out the recline issues

after a few false starts with diff ideas, settled on this one,  quite easy, and can be adjusted too, :)
Did it this way, as the holes keep the clip in place
Once you no how to doo it, its takes about 5 mins to doo,
And cos the seats are bolted frae under neath, its a doodle to get em oot too. :)

1, on the top , back,  drill some 1/16 wols in the adjuster bit, and then with a small file, make to size of the clips to be used, in this case, the size of the needle flat file.

2,  then drill some more here, drill straight thru to the bottom on this bit, so you got two at the curve,  and then drill another  yan at the back, at the bottom,

3, Now thread the tie clip, thru the wols  and adjust to suit your needs.

4, in these  pics ,you can see there is no much room to play with, its still awkward to adjust the seat when sitting in it,   As the arm rests are just above the adjuster,
and the bolster is in the way too.

All i got to doo now, is chancge the seat belt clips to suit the MX type,  as they are totally diffrent.

Still no too happy about the driving position,  when i get round to it, will investigate wether I can ..hollow.. the seat base out abit, this will get me back end down abit,

Marcus
