MarkB
Hi AllMy GT6 Mk2 is fitted with the later low back recliner front seats and are really worn now as to be expected. I have lived with these for about 10 years and to be honest has been way down on the list of things to do as the car really needs some panel work and a respray, engine etc. I am rebuilding my vitesse so have been happy to keep it MOT'd and use it. A year or so ago I bought an mx5 Mk1, which is water tight quick and comfortable, and jumping back into the GT6 makes me realise how uncomfortable and rough the seats are. I would like to rebuild but after making enquires to rebuild them myself is going to cost the best part of a grand. The other option is after market seats but the ones I have seen all look pretty poorly made and nowhere near the quality of the originals. Whats your thoughts? Bite the bullet and rebuild or go for an aftermarket 60's style seat. The prices are based on Newton commercial kits, independet upholsters worked out a lot dearer. Tim Bancroft
Have you got a photo of your seats? Is my memory fading, but are'nt late mk2 seats the same as early mk3 seats?
GT6chris
MK2 "facelift seats" were only fitted to the MK2 and then only for around a year - 1970.Just rebuilding a set of highbacks for my MK2. The only suppliers of trim for these seats is Newton.RegardsChris

MarkB
Thanks BrendanI do have the padded pieces that run along the tunnel cover along with the arm rest and knee pads. i cant remember why or when i removed them possibly when I renewed the clutch a few years ago. It will all go back one day when i eventually restore the car.
CHRIS211083
Take them to your local trimmer and for vinyl cover made from scratch and fitted will be £300. I was quoted £500 for a pair done in leather with new foam. Shop about and get it done local.Chris.
Nick Moore
Chris' advice is good advice. I've had three sets of seats reupholstered by local trimmers. In each case they've been able to add extra padding for improved shape and support. Just adding 1/4" foam behind the panel improves the seats' appearance noticeably. You can also choose materials and colours, and it gives you the options of contrasting piping and different stitching patterns and colours. It also means you're supporting a local craftsman. The majority of the cost is in the labour rather than the materials. I've had my seats recovered in leather because it only cost a couple of hundred dollars more than vinyl.
