Rumpith
I think my starter motor is on the way out, as it seems to keep disengaging (as the engine turns over, just as you think it's about to start the starter goes into free spin as if no longer engaged with the flywheel)I've seen ads for high-torque starter motors which look not much more expensive than the standard ones. Anyone got one and are they any good?
Pete Lewis
One of the best mods you can do,, flings the engine over at a heck of a rate, reckon it would start it even if the battery was missing,it takes so little load compared to the bendix or pre engaged units, the motor is a high speed with a gearbox to reduce the revs and generate the torque ,, no more lazy cold day problems or worries about battery state you could get the adaptor plates and fit a motor from a scrappythe nippon denso unit was used on many cars thro' the 80s & 90's .if you have a tubular exhaust it gets a bit close to the pipes ,, we added a ally heat shield of the case bolts just to protect it from cooking if that helps Pete
willcolumbine
I've just built one from the Canleys kit. I haven't used it yet so I can't comment on how it works but it sure was easy to put together and fit. Thats the cheapest way to skin this cat - cost me about half of what a pre built one would do! On a spit the starter's on the other side so it won't be anywhere near the manifold! :)

willcolumbine
Yup! It's been on my list for a while now - I can finally tick it off! There's so many advantages. The way they engage the ring gear puts less stress on it, they look good and they're one hell of a lot lighter. You can save even more weight if you wire it up using the built in solenoid - then you can loose the standard one on the bulkhead!
gilesdive
Not only does it spin it over at a good rate, since it draws less current I get less of a voltage drop so my fuel pump still gets its full 12v. Previously while starting the fuel pump had such a low voltage it struggled - can't really have helped the ignition too much either.Worth-while mod. :)
G.in_Lux
Ordered mine months ago, still waiting for it to arrive...
willcolumbine
Just turned mine over and realised the one drawback - my car dosen't sound like a spitfire starting anymore. The CLUNK UH HUH UH HUH UH HUH noise is gone forever! :)
Tim Bancroft
Got them on both the GT6 and 2.5, bloomin marvellous!
neilnaz
What sort of sound do they make? I have got to say that I would probably get a Hi-Torque starter motor if my current starter motor was to die. However I have had no problems with starting the car in over 5 years of ownership. Mmmmm maybe I shouldn't have just said that :-/ :) ;D

neilnaz
So my car will make a different Whheeee sound rather than chug chug chug before I actually switch the ignition on then?I always crank for 20seconds then flick ignition on (to get oil round and pressure up) as my car is often left a week or more between runs.Whilst it is still all working as it should I think I will leave well alone.Ta muchly for the sound effect info though :P
Richard B
You should not need 20 seconds with a Hi-Torque. The motor turns over much faster, 5 - 10 seconds at a guess.Honestly they are absolutely great.

willcolumbine
I tried mine out today and it started up so quickly I didn't even get to hear the noise the starter was making!
