  1. Like Guppy I too sent my speedo to Speeycables after fitting a 3.63:1 and had it recalibrated. They weren't very speedy! But did a great job 🙂
  2. My first time here for a while and am pleased to see a massive improvement in speed of loading! The new layout and Forum format will take me a while to get used to, but overall a big improvement. Well done to those involved!

    GT6 Tailgate holes

Yeah, thanks Rob. I wonder if perhaps Triumph had originally planned to put the wires inside the tailgate as there are a couple of holes in the frame at the top by the hinges too.

    GT6 Tailgate holes

Hi Guppy, Many thanks, I'll just tidy them up then. Richard.

    GT6 Tailgate holes

I have a heated screen but sem to recall that the wires for that were tucked under the window seal. Could be wrong though. Do you have a GT6? Could you take a look at yours?

    GT6 Tailgate holes

Hi Guys, I don't get here that often, mainly because my GT6 doesn't give me any real trouble! However! I'm in the process of doing some repairs to my tailgate and have a query I'm hoping someone can help me with. After stripping the tailgate and repairing the corners and the inner window flanges, I've noticed two almost perfectly circular holes in the sides of the gate which I'm wondering if they should to be there. Here's the tailgate: And this is one of the holes (there's one in exactly the same place on the other side): Can anyone tell me if they are supposed to be there and if so, what they are ther for? Many thanks. Richard.
  7. Oh, I see what you did there! 😄 You're quite right though, I should get along to a local meet or two. I have two within shouting distance, one in Bristol (actually right next to where I work!) and another north of Swindon. I must try harder! Thanks Glang. Richard
  8. I was up the A9 the other week and was reminded by my brother who lives in Elgin that it's not so much that the trucks (exceeding 7.5 tonnes) can only do 50, more that the trucks can now do 50!  Previously of course they were limited to 40 on a single carriageway. The speed limits for trucks were raised in England and Wales in 2015 but not in Scotland strangely.
  9. Just checked the oil filter set up, see pic.
  10. Thanks mate. I'll try and check that tomorrow but it will likely be next weekend as I have relatives coming tomorrow for a few days. Weekends have been mad the last few weeks but I should be getting back to normal by the BH weekend. I'll let you know what I find. Regards,
  11. Hi all, and again, my apologies for not being around much recently. Glang - Hi, sorry to answer a query with more questions but: Is this everytime you start the engine hot or cold? Yes, unless it's within just a few minutes of switching off. And does the engine make any extra noises before the warning light goes out? If I rev it straight away it sort of rumbles a bit, so I don't do it! How many miles has the engine done and has it had a bottom end rebuild in that time? Engine was a recon short motor from RB about 11 years ago and has done 30,000 relatively trouble free miles. Finally what pressure readings do you get when hot at tickover and 3000rpm? Tickover 10 - 15, 3000 rpm 40psi. Colin - Spin-on conversion without oil cooler. Iain - Assuming you are talking about a “cold” engine & the oil-pressure switch is working correctly Seems to be both cold and warm (after say 5 or 10 minutes) and the light is backed up by the oil pressure gauge. The pump is worn out? I hope not! The bearing clearances are too large? I haven't checked. Aftermarket external top end lubricator? I don't have one fitted. Worn out mineral oil? Oils is changed every year regardless of mileage and has had a precautionary oil change JIC. Magically thin oil? As above. Oil dilution? As above. When the engine is running with the light off (Oil Pressure light) for a few seconds when you kill the engine and & stopped put ignition back on; If it does not come on (Oil Pressure light)or goes off when 1 second, your flow is too much. If I've interpreted this correctly then when the engine is cold, the light stays off for a few seconds until the pressure drops off in lline with the gauge. When hot it does the same except much, much more quickly! Some additional info - on cold start up I get 70ish psi at 1500 rpm which gradually drops to around 40 as the engine warms, finally hitting around 20 - 25 at 1500 once fully hot. If you need any more info please let me know. Many thanks, Richard.
  12. Sorry guys, haven't been here for a while. I've been a little distracted of late with a new workshop build, sorting the garden and getting my '36 Morris 8 ready for the Shetland Classic in 2020. But, I'm back! I'm going to pen a proper response this weekend with answers to all your questions. Please forgive my tardiness. Regards, Richard.
  13. Hi Guys, The oil pressure in my GT6 takes 3 or 4 seconds to indicate on the gauge and for the warning light to go out. I've heard this is not uncommon. Anyone know the cause? I'd like to sort it if it's not too much of a big deal. Regards,

    MOT or not

I quite enjoy the whole process of getting my GT6 MoT'd. I spend an hour in the company of an old mate, we put the world to rights over a coffee and generally rip the p** out of each other. And I (usually) come away with a clean bill of health (and an MoT certificate for the car!). I find it quite satisfying to know that I am maintaing and repairing my Triumph properly. As for more stringent regulations, the GT6 is the least of my worries. I've just had my 240k mile X Type fail an emission test because in the time I've had the car (since new) the ministry have decided to halve the allowable emissions with no regard to 'grandfather's rghts'!
  15. Hi guys, Thanks for your input. I've now given the gauge a good bleed, oil everywhere! BUt, to no avail. after standing for about 15 minutes, again 4 -5 seconds before both the oil pressure light goes out and the pressure rises on the gauge. Still registers good pressure but this delay is making me nervous. Nick, I've looked up the Mann filter and it looks quite a bit longer (about double the length of the one I have), and doesn't look like it will fit. Yes, the oil pressure light responds in accordance with the gauge. If the engine is allowed to rev then the bearings do rattle. Fortunately the engine will start with minimal or no choke so starts pretty much at tickover speeds. As for the adaptor, it has been on for some years but I did consider there might be a problem here so ordered an overhaul kit from the original suppliers (RB) and replaced the parts supplied wih it. It's not inconceivable that I have c***ed up replacing parts but that would be quite a coincidence. I do remember something being spring loaded inside but to be honest, I can't remember exactly what that was. Perhaps I'll pull it off again and take a closer look. Tony, As mentioned, the oil pressure light reflects what's being shown by the gauge but your thoughts are appreciated. By the way, sorry it's taking me so long to reply but I've had to get my daily driver (a 240k miles X Type) through an mot and that hasn't been without its challenges! Regards, Richard.
  16. Hi Glang, I finally got round to checking the oil pressure relief valve last night and all looked quite clean. Certainly no evidence of sticking. I did wonder, is there a non-return valve in the oil system somewhere (I seem to remember there being one in the old straight six Rover SD1 I had some years ago that would clog up and prevent oil getting to the valve gear) that may be stuck open allowing all the oil to drain back into the sump every time the engine stops? Regards, Richard.
  17. Shell do an app for a smart phone that will give you the nearest Shell Station wherever you are in the UK. I do like their 99 Octane Super U/L. Just an aside, we regularly take our 73 GT6 to Shetland (they have a fantastic Classic Car Show there every two years) where the last fill of 99 is by the ferry terminal in Aberdeen! It's also usually the first stop on the way back too! As Dannyb says, carry an bottle of octane booster with you. Hope you get fuel! Richard.
  18. Will do. I'll check it at the weekend. Thanks,
  19. Hi again, So, I've replaced the spin-on oil filter, this time with one from the supplier of the conversion, and also replaced all the seals on the conversion itself. Sadly, the problem is still there. about a 4 or 5 second delay before oil pressure comes up. Any suggestions? Regards, Richard.
  20. Hi, Yeah, it does it hot as well as cold. Oil pressure itself is good, 60+ on a cold start and gradually settling down as the oil warms, no different throughout the range of temperatures to before the service. I'll take your advice and change the spin-on filter again though. I have a couple but may source one from elsewhere just in case. Many thanks, Richard.
  21. Hi all, Did a quick search of the forum but found nothing similar. I've recently serviced my GT6 and find that oil pressure now takes an age to build. Ok so probably only 4 or 5 seconds, but that's 3 or 4 seconds longer than it used to. I dont believe I've done anything different to how I've serviced it every year for the last 10 years. I use Halfords 20/50 and all the service items came fron David Manners. Any suggestions? Regards, Richard.

    Tailgate

Hi Tim, Yeah, tried all the usual suspects, but thanks all the same. Oh, and a couple of small drain holes make a lot of sense. Good tip. Regards, Richard.

    Tailgate

Hi Rob, I guessed that might be the case. Mine is now leaving little piles of orange dust on the boot carpet so time to get serious with a sheet of steel and an English Wheel I think. The outer skin shouldn't be too troubling but the inner shell could be tricky. I may just locally repair that where required. Anyway, thanks for the update. Regards,
