  1. Thanks Wendy and Dave. I was reading about Darren and marmite and thought it could be similar. Although I want to avoid stripping it down as it’s running well! Dave it is definitely engine related as it goes up with the revs, not the speed of the vehicle. I might come to my local group meeting and let others listen and see what they think. Although I’m kind of in the middle of a few groups in Sheffield.
  2. Hi All i have a TR6 that is showing 47000 miles, but have no clue what mileage the engine has done, or if it has ever been rebuilt etc. I have owned it for nearly 2 years and have done 5500 miles, including 700 on the recent C2C. It runs well has decent power and feels responsive. However there is a tick that sounds tappety, it has had this since I got it I have reset the valve clearances three times and the last 2 served to show that I’d got it right the first time. It has good oil pressure and compression and does not use much oil. I have been around the engine with a long screwdriver holding it to my ear and various components. If I was pointing to anywhere it would be the intake manifold, however that could be the pulsing of the injectors? I have tightened the exhaust manifold and there appears to be no exhaust gas escape causing a tick in this area. The only other area of concern is one of the spark plug threads is a bit loose and there is evidence of gas escape on the threads. I have tightened it gives no change to the tick. As I say it’s running well, and I have done the usual checks. Is there anything simple I am missing? Thanks in advance Neil
  3. This does take me back!!! I did love that Vitesse. It did complete the 2016 RBRR. I sold it in late 2017. I bought a Mk1 stag and did the 2022 RBRR in that. I have since sold the stag to my brother and bought a TR6. On to your point Ian, the Vitesse is a great car, but if you are unable to have an auto in it what about a stag? Mine was a great cruiser and so easy to drive with a BW35 auto and power steering! You also get the great noise from the 3 litre V8!
  4. Yes from TRGB, thought Gary and the guys there were really good. I think I’ll run as is for a while. I am going through everything mechanical as we speak. It does need painting. Any recommendations in the Sheffield area would be good. I drove it the 140 miles home and it did not miss a beat at 70 all the way! Think it might be my next RBRR car😁
  5. I had a Mk2 Vitesse with a 2500 on twin SUs. It had OD and a 3.27 diff. 25 mph per 1000 rpm gave brilliant cruising on the 2016 rbrr, and good MPG. It didn’t ever feel like it struggled to pull top OD.
  6. Sorted now….. I now own a solid but many shades of red 74 TR6! Thanks to all that looked!
  7. Hi All I am looking for a TR6. I want a home market car, if possible. Something that is a running restoration, that can be improved whilst having fun driving it. If anyone knows of anything please let me know. Thanks Neil
  8. Hi All I, along with a mate, took part in the 2016 RBRR, completing it in a 1970 Vitesse. I am thinking of doing 2020 with my brother, and my nephew. My nephew will be 17, and will have hopefully passed his test between April and October. The idea is to limit his driving to easier bits, and in the light. Problem will be getting some kind of insurance for him, I am with Lancaster and although I know they are supportive of people with classics, and probably the club, I do not know if I could convince them that this would be something worth supporting? He's quite a sensible lad but I am not sure I would trust a 17 year old me behind the wheel, especially not driving my pride and joy! Neil
  9. I was using 95 RON all the way. Sooner or later I will have to have the head done.
  10. The exhaust emission on my 1970 Vitesse is quite dirty. I have spotted this before but when I got back from the RBRR the whole driver side of the boot was covered in a yellowish dirt that the exhaust had managed to leave there through smoking. You could visibly see it (it is a white car). Anyway I thought it could be running rich, I have checked and it is not. Is it burning oil? it used under a pint in the 2300 miles I did on the RBRR weekend. In fact it lost no water, used a little oil and managed mid 30's MPG. I have also done a compression check and it is about 150 across all 6 cylinders. Anyone have any ideas, or am I worrying about nothing?
  11. Right I have now checked the compression on all cylinders. It is reading 125 - 135 across all 6 so a little bit low, although it runs well. It does not burn oil and the water never needs topping up. I have taken it on some fairly long runs (about 200 miles in one afternoon) and have had no problems. The car is a bit of a mish mash of parts. The block is an ME from a 2000 with HE (high compression) suffix. I have measured the throw on the pistons and it appears to be a 2500. At some point I think it has had some parts from a later TR6 fitted as the brake callipers are post 72 metric unions. As the engine is not a Vitesse engine and could be part 2000 part TR6 it is hard to say what the compression should be?
  12. Hi All A quick question relating to a 1970 Vitesse. I have checked the spark plugs on the car tonight. They are about 3 months old. 5 out of the 6 were quite sooty so this lead me to believe I must be running rich which I can sort. Cylinder 4 was very clean as if it was running lean. I have recently done the valve clearances could  have got one wrong and caused this? Thanks Neil
  13. All Finally got down to doing the checks on the engine, to try and determine what it is. Using a long tie wrap down onto piston 1 the difference between TDC and BDC was just short of 10cm. So looking at this it points to a 2500. If you look at the sump pan it is not bashed in any place. It is however near touching the steering rack (in fact it might be although there is plenty of oil there!). Some things point to a 2.5. I am not sure, I suppose the main thing is it is fun to drive. Thanks to all who commented and offered advice. Neil
  14. How would I tell if it was a 2500? The car drives well and has a lot of torque. If you are trying to pick up speed quickly it feels like there is little benefit in going over 3500 - 4000 rpm. It does make a louder noise though!!
  15. Right - the plot tickens! I have been under the car and it is a KC differential. This is the 3.27 differential. Which cars were the 3.27 originally fitted? I am trying to work out what I have. At present I have an ME block and a KC diff. This sounds more like a triumph 2000 set up? Thanks all!
  16. Hi Thanks Nick I will check the Diff. The tyres are now 175/70/13, so as close as can be. I am not sure about the Diff as the gearing seems about right for a 2000. With Sat Nav reading 50mph (speedo 44mph) the engine is doing 2000 RPM in top OD. This fits with 25mph per 1000 RPM. Neil
  17. Hi All I have another issue that I think is related to this. My speedo under reads by around 10%, I also checked the mileage and this under reads. The speedo is an 1152. The gearbox has a synchromesh on 1st gear and I am pretty sure that Vitesse's did not. I also think that when I changed the clutch it was a pain to get back in, I had to modify the transmission tunnel as it was slightly too long (must have been put in together with the engine before). I believe Triumph 2000's had a synchromesh on first gear. I think I have a triumph 2000 gearbox also and that they usually link up with a 1000 speedo meaning that mine under reads. Could any of you with greater Triumph knowledge than me confirm that I am maybe thinking along the correct lines? Thanks Neil
  18. Cheers guys - feel better about that now. Hope the engine is still good come next October as it is doing the RBRR!
  19. Hi All I was finally getting down to doing some fettling of the Vitesse, I have owned it for 3 months now. The car has SU's and also the triumph 2000 inlet manifold (did not know this when I bought it). I thought I better check the engine number, I was not surprised when it turns out to start "ME", meaning that it is a triumph 2000 engine (was secretly hoping it was going to be a 2500). This engine does not have the same figures/is not as strong as the Vitesse engine. It does run well though which I suppose is the main thing. I feel a bit disappointed in this. Does anyone know of any benefit to having this engine so as I can look at it as though my glass is half full? I suppose I should have checked this when I bought it! (I would have bought it anyway) Thanks Neil

    Head Gasket?

Thanks All Going back to thinking that my glass is half full again! Going to take it for a long drive soon (weather permitting). I have taken it for a 35 mile blast about a month ago where I did not hold back as I was testing to see how it would perform. Even some high speed motorway did not phase the engine, it did phase the driver who backed off before it hit anywhere near it supposed maximum! Thanks for the messages Neil

    Head Gasket?

The oil look fine. The oil level is on the Maximum and I thought that on m last check it was about 1/2 way between minimum and max. Not sure if I topped it up though!! Think I need to take it for a longish run......if it ever stops raining!

    Head Gasket?

Hi All I have a 1970 Mk2 Vitesse I am not sure if I am worrying for nothing. However I noticed a slight white yogurt type liquid around the oil filler cap (very small amount). I cleaned out the oil breather and that also had the same in there. I was running the car in the garage for about 5 minutes so not massively warm, when I blipped the throttle by tweaking the carb the release on the oil filler cap let out a small amount of smoke. When I checked the oil tonight it looks as thought the level has risen (although I could not be 100% sure) On the plus side the water temperature is at a constant 85 when running. It never goes over this. It runs well, good pick up and it idles properly too. There is no excessive white sweet smelling smoke from the exhaust. I topped up the radiator tonight. First time since I have had it (3 months and 350 miles) and it only took about 1/2 pint. The water does go into the expansion tank but not excessively. Am I worrying about something that I should not be? Any help much appreciated. Neil
  23. Hi All I wonder if anyone could help me, I have recently purchased a Vitesse. It is running fine however I am not sure that the oil breather is the correct set up. It is a 1970 MK2 with twin SU's, the breather comes off the engine into the little breather funnel and then onto the centre of the manifold. The SU's have the twin breather connections, these are blanked off with a bit of hose and bolts in them (a bit of an eyesore!). My thought is that the funnel breather set up was for cars with strombergs, and that with twin SU's it should come off the engine to a t point with a hose to each carb. Does anyone know? Any help much appreciated. Neil
