    Timing lights

I needed one to set up the timing on my Acclaim after I had the dizzy in bits. Got a Draper one with inductive pickup and variable advance for just under £30 at my local Trago, superb bit of kit and well worth the money. The variable advance bit is useful in diagnosing faults that don't appear at all revs, can tell you when the balance weights or vac advance are playing up for instance. Jon
  2. too far away for me, otherwise I'd bite your arm off up to the shoulder. assuming you can't do free delivery to Cornwall . Jon
  3. is that the type of flasher can that pushes into a socket like a relay? if so it could be that the contacts in the socket have moved out of line or lost their springiness, original part with slightly thicker or slightly bent contact makes a circuit, new part doesn't? Hope this helps, Jon
  4. Thanks for all your comments on this, the car is now booked for friday week. I'm now planning on sticking with the original manifold and pipe diameter, but easing off the bends under the car and getting a more free flowing silencer. Based on a combination of the advice on here and what the exhaust manufacturer told me. I have checked the bushes and they appear to be in A1 condition, as is the bracket, I suspect the cracking is purely down to the age of the exhaust, which could well be the original as the car was laid up for a couple of decades in a heated garage before I got it (still had the original tyres then too, they have since been changed for some that don't feel like they're made of oak) its the mk 1 exhaust which I understand was prone to cracking just there anyway. Just got to choose a tailpipe design (so much choice!), think I'll go with something that looks fairly standard rather than the 'steal me' drainpipe type.
  5. Some time next week I'm getting a stainless exhaust made for my Acclaim, sick of patching up the cracked downpipe on the old one. I'm planning on a slightly larger diameter pipe and easing off some of the bends under the car, should help the gasflow as the original exhaust design looks quite restrictive. I'm not after boy racer loudness or anything like that, more the fit and forget solution, but as its being custom made I might as well specify something that might improve performance a little. Was wondering if its worth getting a stainless tubular manifold made at the same time? it does seem that most of the restriction to the gasflow is where the 4 outlets go into 1 within a few inches, and as I'm spending a fair bit of cash on the pipes I might as well spend a bit more and go the whole hog, its going to need some new mounting points/hangers if I do go down this route, and it will be 4 pipes with a bend vulnerable to cracking rather than 1 (4 flexi sections perhaps), could be more trouble than its worth or could make a real difference to the performance, I just don't know yet. so has anyone got some experience of something similar on an Acclaim that they could share? stop me making an expensive mistake perhaps, or suggest a design tweak that might be an improvement? Will have a nearly new rear silencer with the early 3 point flange fitting going spare when its all done if anyones interested. Jon

    Fuel Pump Needed

I've got an Acclaim for breaking, in southeast Cornwall,  fuel pump and seatbelt plug are on there and serviceable,  plenty of other small bits if you need them too, please get in touch via PM if interested. hope this helps. Jon

    head gasket gone?

Its my daily driver, 4 miles each way commute for split shifts. Probably explains why it never gets the chance to warm up properly.  Regular oil changes and flushes are keeping the mayo at manageable levels at the mo, a good long drive sounds more fun though. Will try and get out more to more distant places to give it a good run in future. Thanks for all your advice. Jon

ok, but what should I do that's different from normal?

    head gasket gone?

Turns out the gasket had gone, finally realised when I did my regular levels check and noticed the oil level had gone up! turned out to have been blowing between the cylinder and water jacket on no 2 cylinder. Managed to get a head set from a suziki cheaply from my local motor factors and a head skim for 25 from a local engineer. While I was at it I changed the cambelt and water pump too (had to take the belt off to do the head and it seemed foolhardy to not replace it with new when rebuilding). Whole job was much easier and cheaper than I had imagined, Worst bit was scraping off all the gasket remnants that seemed welded to the block, paranoid about scraping too hard and damaging the face of it. Performance is much improved (though even with a blown gasket it ran well and was nippy enough to keep up with all the local traffic).   Still getting plenty of mayonnaise though, despite several oil/water flushes and a thorough cleanout of all the pipes, guess thats just a characteristic of this engine. whats an italian tune up by the way? Cant afford to fit ferrari bits and fiat is a swear word round my way.

    rocker cover gasket

if anyones having trouble getting a new rocker gasket (or head set) don't forget to try asking for a suzuki jimny one instead, theyre far easier to find and identical for the key components. Did my acclaim head gasket with one of these and had no problems, only bits that arent compatible in the full set were the carb gaskets.  I emailed practical classics with this info when I saw that question, but not sure if they printed it  as I missed the next few issues. I wonder how similar to an acclaim the rest of the jimny mechanicals are? possibilities for sourcing other mechanical components perhaps, or even a 4wd acclaim!

    Spark plug woes

probably nothing to do with the problem, having seen your last post, but I had similar starting issues after driving through deep puddles, and then stopping for a while in cold weather. Turned out the problem was slight damp inside the  the distributor cap, no sign of cracks or a bad seal, and the problem recurred with known to be good spares, eventually I solved the problem by taking the cap off on  a really hot day and letting it all warm up in the sun for a few hours, then refitting and spraying dampstart over the join. I think a tiny bit of moisture had become trapped somewhere in the workings of the dizzy and would evaporate when driving, only to recondense on the inside of the cap when it cooled down, drying out or replacing the cap only provided a new surface for it to condense onto. Had a couple of years trouble free  (well...that starting trouble anyway) since.
  12. has it still got the exhaust? I'm having a lot of trouble finding a front pipe for my acclaim (the early type with 3bolt flanges either end), I'm in cornwall and can collect if needed. might be interested in the rest of the car too if the price is right and its not too far gone. Cheers, Jon.

    head gasket gone?

did a 300ish mile run yesterday and the problem seems to have dissapeared, thanks for your advice, the car only usually does short runs, so i will make the effort to get a regular longer journey in. jon

    head gasket gone?

Having a bit of a problem with my acclaim, its showing some of the symptoms of head gasket faliure (magarine like deposit under the oil cap and similar but browner stuff in the radiator cap), but still runs superbly with no sign of power loss or overheating, and i'm wondering if it really is the gasket, its not been using large amounts of oil and water. is there something else that could cause these symptoms, or a definite way of testing the gasket without too much dismantling? thanks jon
