My tweaked engine in the Vitesse is an ME series. I understood the head to have better flowing ports, but otherwise little else different. That said, I decked the block, fitted flat top pistons and planed the head to bring the CR to around 9.5:1 along with a lumpy cam a dn additional head work. So, basically just treated it all as base castings to work with! Sorry, that's probably not much help is it ?! 🤔

I had a 1500 Spitfire fitted with the Sprint engine and TR7 LT77 gearbox. As said, the nearside turret needs shaving for the manifold, the passenger footwell is comprimised slightly for the downpipes and mine also had a shaved front crossmember under the (standard) sump. GT6 bonnet still needed a couple of small bulges for the oil filler cap and front carb dashpot. Bulkhead was stock. It was an absolute flyer and very well balanced. T'was also featured in a Practical Classics article some years ago 😉 , alongside a few others, including Canleys' Macau, TLDs' 2.7l and a Jigsaw prepped 1300 fitted with a Lenham hardtop IIRC

When I fitted a type 9 in my Vitesse, I just used the standard original Sierra rear mount and bolted it to the chassis rails. I guess it's in a slightly different position in a Herald due to the shorter engine? Shouldn't be difficult to make any brackets if you need them.

I've got one of those vacuum brake bleeding kits. It also does a very good job of sucking out the diff oil

What lift pump are you using? Have you checked the height of the float in the float chamber?

That's interesting JohnD, when I put the tweaked engine in my Vitesse, I also went for a modern Aluminium Honda Civic radiator just like the one you're showing. I'm buggered if it would keep my engine cool though :/ I'm now running a modified Ford Escort RS2000 radiator, which is almost 30% bigger in surface area and it still struggles

Regardless of who made them, they're never gonna fit under the arches of a Herald/Vitesse with that offset!

In a previous life I ran 185/70 13's on 5.5" Revolution 4 spokes from MWS on my MK2 Vitesse saloon Occassionally they would rub on the bump stop bracket and i definitely had to massage the wheel arch lip a bit, but it's not impossible. I don't know what the offset was though

The engine currently in my Vitesse is ME 9xxxx which was from a manual 2000 saloon and had a 218 cylinder head, domed pistons and a recessed block. Quite a bit later down the line than yours though

The fuel rails are slightly lower than the K&N air filters and dashpots on the carbs, so clearance under the bonnet is enough. The rear TB to bulkhead might be a bit closer, but seeing as the rest of the car is nowhere near standard, I'm not adverse to relieving it a bit for clearance if needed ;)

Nick_Moore wrote:Impressive. We will be watching with interest, Mr Speedy. Is your engine still 2L? What diameter are the 675 throttle bodies? Nick, the engine these will be going is a late ME series saloon engine which has had a +060" bore, lightened and balanced crank, rods, and pistons, reworked head, flat top pistons and a Kent TH7 camshaft The throttle bodies are approx 42mm diameter at the manifold end

It is visually deceptive, but the new inlet runners I've made are only half an inch longer than the stock Vitesse manifold! With the throttle bodies being considerably more compact than the CD150's and K&N filters I used to be running, there'll be plenty of room, even with the ram pipes fitted.
