  1. The Spitfire behaved well during the official run. On the travel to Lille it lost one the balancing weights on the rear, resulting in a bit of shaking when going quicker than 60mph. The tires had been fitted and balanced in August. On the way home from Rolduc the waterpump (fitted in July) packed up, so the last 250km were done on the back of a recovery car... 😀

  2. Hi Nick

B-roads would be nicer, but you will have lots of them on the 10CR itself. I would not hesitate to use the Autobahn to get to the start. I live in Germany and regularly use my Spitfire on the Autobahn. Not the best suited car for this kind of driving (MK3 on 4.11 diff and OD), but it manages okay! 65-70mph is alright for car and driver!

We will travel from Southwestern Germany to Rolduc via Luxembourg and Belgium using their motorways.

  3. Hello all, team 58 Holzer/Philipp in 68 MK3 Spitfire here…

    Some more tasks completed:
    -     Replaced the differential
    -     Improved the lighting with new Hellas and OSRAM Nightbreaker bulbs
    -    Replaced twin sports exhaust with a single box (less noisy)
    -     Replaced the front screen

    Things to do:
    -     Change the cooling hoses and replace cooling fluid
    -     Engine oil change
    -     Fit cigarette lighter for SAT Nav and mobile phone charging
    -     Maybe new tires

Thank you for your suggestions! The car was upgraded to relays a few years ago and, like you say, that is a very good modification. It is still on a set of old Lucas headlight units (standard bulbs) and they have become a bit dim. I have an unused set of Hella headlights in the lock-up that I plan to fit, together with Nightbreaker bulbs. Hopefully that will chase the glow-worm out of my headlights!

  5. Hello all, team 58 Holzer/Philipp here! We were in a white 13/60 estate on the 10CR 2015 and will be using a 68 MK3 Spitfire for the next event. I have owned the car for about 17 years and it is quite reliable. Still I am giving it a good going-over for the 10CR.
So far I have done the following:
    -     Had the seats rebuilt
    -     Replaced the clutch assembly
    -     Replaced the original bell-housing with an alloy one
    -     Cleaned the OD filters (much needed…)
    -     Replaced the gearbox mounting
    -     Replaced the leaking clutch slave
    Currently working on:
    -     Rebuilding the rear axle (new driveshafts, ujs, bearings, etc.)
    -     Replacing the original wheel studs with Landrover ones
    Further tasks:
    -     Replace the differential
    -     Improve the lighting
    -     Change all fluids
    -     New tires
    -     Replace twin sports exhaust with a single box?
    -     Set of Konis for the rear?

  6. I fitted a TD Fitchetts sourced gearbox (3rail OD) to a friend's Spitfire some months ago. The gearbox works a treat, no problems at all. So my experience with them is good.

  7. Hello,

I want to replace the clutch on my Spitfire MK3. The car runs a 1300 small-crank engine and a single-rail OD box from a 1500. So I need a special friction plate for it. The one from a Dolly 1300 (20 spline, 6.5”) seems to fit. The question is: can I also use the pressure plate / clutch cover of the Dolly 1300? That would make ordering a bit easier as I could buy a complete set.

    Thank you.

    Regards
    Christian
