  1. No misunderstanding, I was just attempting humour :) I'm not very good at it! Had an AX for 14 years, excellent car. The MX5 is also a good choice for many things!

I suspect by the way that the entry button may have vanished because the entry closing date has passed so direct communication with the organiser (Nigel Abdullah) is the way to go if anyone still wants to come out and play.

A small suggestion for future events - in the "preamble page" of the route instructions, please include one or two suggestions for refuelling locations.

On Saturday we filled up in Ingleton and, on Sunday, in Kirkby Stephen.  Had we not done so we might well have run out of petrol on the long sections which followed "up on t' moors".

Not a bad idea. When you do the recce. in a modern diesel-powered car that can do the whole weekend on one tank full you tend to forget about these things

Has anyone any idea how a stage rally was allowed to use the same road as the Border Raiders event but in the opposite direction?  Will someone be informing the MSA?

I suspect that our non competitive event with less than 25 cars entered is considered small and "low impact" by MSA standards and may well be allowed to use the same roads as other events.

Personally I didn't encounter this other rally since, having started the cars at the Old Stone Trough, I took a shortcut and met up with people at Pateley Bridge. If a stage rally was on the road however they must have been on a transport section (since a stage would require road closures). I'm not entirely familiar with the rules for stage rallies but I believe that transport sections on the public highway carry certain restrictions by default, things like a low average speed for example. That would influence the MSA's decision as to other events on the same roads.

If the other event was a road rally rather than a stage rally the rules are different again. The MSA rulebook is a hefty tome!

Apologies to everyone who was promised that a picture of their car would appear today. I was contacted by a senior committee member and asked to shrink the pictures so that they didn't do odd things to the thread. Unfortunately, when I attempt to do that the quality suffers to the point where the images are almost indecipherable. I'll keep working on it. Otherwise, if there are any G.I.M.P. experts out there who could offer tips....

Mike has a suggestion above. If you want to use G.I.M.P though you just need Image --> Scale Image in the menu and set it to probably about 25% in both dimensions. I've used that many times.

Have uploaded a few pictures to the album. Also, I tracked the 2nd day using the ViewRanger app on my phone (completely forgot about it the first day). Hopefully you can see it here :

Excellent. Yesterday I completely failed to extract a plot to show here from the mapping I used to plan the whole thing! I'll try again and see if I can get the first day as well.

  6. If I got the technology right (sometimes Google and Facebook are a black art even to those of us who work in IT every day!) this post should link to a shared photo album where anyone can contribute their pictures. Please send us your photographs of the 2017 event so we can see what everyone else got up to!

I'll leave the album open to contributions for a while, then I'll lock it and copy the contents to @TheBorderRaiders on Facebook and also here on the club web site/forum if I can.

I would imagine the same time as Sat....10am

Regs state 9am on Sunday. With 20-odd cars to set off at one minute intervals though we'll be there for a while. The earlier start on the second day was deliberate and is intended to allow those with a long distance to travel home to have a chance at a slightly earlier finish if they want, without having to rush.

I note that the entry was closed as of 9th June and with my withdrawal I believe it stands at 22 cars. I now wonder if a previously disappointed team would like to take up my place. I had booked a double room at The Old Stone Trough for the Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. I just checked and note that they are fully booked for the Friday and Saturday nights, in view of this I will delay cancelling  my reservation until 31st July in case a possible replacement team needs a room.

Apologies for the delayed response, I've not been keeping up with the forum recently.

I'm sorry you can't join us for this event Tim. If anyone does want to take Tim's place for The Border Raiders I suggest you contact Tim directly in the first instance and make arrangements to change the hotel booking, and then send me a private message on here so we can sort out the necessary paperwork.

  9. I'm entered for the track day too. Based on a recent email I think the organisers are waiting for a better idea of the number likely to attend before coming up with the final plan for the day which is probably why there are no "rules" yet. The entry form asks you to classify yourself in one of three experience categories though so I assume the intention is to run sessions for each group if there are enough people.

  10. You can get a much bigger single box under the boot floor and make it really quite high if you exit the tailpipe under the rear wing. As others have commented though the lowest part will be where the pipe passes around the diff. and chassis. Also where it goes under the gearbox if you have a larger than normal diameter main pipe section as my rather non-standard car does. Having said that, on a standard car I always found the original silencer arrangement to be fine.

Please excuse the amateur mechanic fiddling with my driveshafts

IIRC Mik Davies has "plastic" windows on his racing Spitfire John, might be worth pinging him about it?

Yes, I do Polycarbonate (genuine Lexan in fact though that was just what turned up when I ordered them, no idea if there's any difference between brands of polycarbonate).

The question of how to fit the side windows depends largely on how much of the original door you want to keep. In the previous incarnation of my race car I just cut polycarbonate to the shape of the original glass, removed the winder mechanism (to save weight) and bolted a channel across between the original winder channels at the position the glass would have been supported with the window fully up. Then I just fitted the plastic windows as a direct replacement for the glass.

Apart from the usual issues with plastic being more flexible than glass and therefore being pushed out at speed (two or three inches at the top in fact) this system worked well. The flapping top edge was solved by attaching a small length of aluminium angle under the edge of the hard top. Just push the window under the "tab" when closing the door.

Having just finished rebuilding the car I've replaced the steel doors with fibreglass ones that have the inner skin cut away (mostly to clear the roll cage but I must have saved at least a couple of grams weight too ). That meant a new approach to the windows so I started again with a polycarbonate window that extends down inside the door and is supported with aluminium angle , long bolts and spacers very much like John was describing earlier. Despite using much thicker plastic I couldn't get enough tension to hold them in though so I've kept the tabs under the hard top as well.

Not sure if this link will work. If it doesn't I'll try and share this picture a different way.

As for the rest of the windows, I've left the windscreen as standard laminated glass. I don't have quarterlights and all the others were polycarbonate anyway that came fitted to my fibreglass hardtop.
