i have it sorted, the main problem was movement it the top and bottom clamps, i replaced the column bushes and put rubber in the main clamps. lowered the tyre pressure to 24psi from 30psi. it now drives beautifully, many thanks for all your help your advice cured it
-
Thanks for all the tips, I have ordered new column bushes and I will do the adjustments mentioned, as I say all the suspension front and rear are new. the car drives and rides great it's just this shake when you go over a rough road the steering wheel vibrates and rattles
-
Thanks, Rubber rack Mounts, will check Tyre pressures had new ones fitted so haven't checked. wheel alignment done, its the original universal column joint.
will look into that, and get back
not adjustable shocks, as you say its fine on smooth roads but unfortunately I live in Redditch. And like most towns the roads are abysmal -
I now have my spit on the road and is brilliant, the only fault is when you go over a rough road the steering wheel shakes vibrating
though the Column, all the suspension and rack mountains are new and the is no play in the column as I can detect. is this standard or is there a cure. -

Well i have bit the bullet and got hold of a 72 spitfire for restoration, bought blind, it was a head in hands job when first seen.
but after examination its not that bad, standing 20 years carbs jets blocked and seized, will need replacing, but cleaned out to get started, sounds fine but will know more when stripped, two owners from new, i think one was a vicar its very holey -

Many Thanks -
Was The UJ, although it showed continuity on the multy meter, it obviously was a good enough earth,
Many Thanks for your help. -
i have traced the fault to no earth at the center column, the earth strap at the bottom of the rack is there and ok, but it losses its earth where the column goes into the rack. earth the column and all is well. any ideas.
Thanks -
Hi yes your right, i fitted them over the diff, and the body would not sit properly, i then fitted them under the bulkhead and it was fine, i am now in the process of lining up. got the doors fitting nice but have to close the gap to the bonnet. the body has to go forward. my task for today.
-
Thank you
-
Hi, would the bonnet hinges and springs be car color or black
Thanks -
its a minefield out there, great advice, many thanks.
-
Hi Thanks for all the info, so what i can see the best way is to lock the two spacers above the diff leave the rest loose, fit the doors and adjust as ness. with metal spacers.
