That must have been a while ago, it's a long time since I've sold any rear wings...

Are these Stanpart originals, or repros?

    Cheers,
    Bill.

    Hi Bill

I met you at Beaulieu international auto jumble last September and you had them for sale.

They don't appear to be an exact matching pair, do you recall if they were Stanpart?

    Pete

  2. I am looking for a recommended bodywork repairer experienced in fitting rear lower wings on Heralds.

My Vitesse has had replacement arch and lower wing work carried out badly resulting in the offside wing losing its correct profile above the wheel arch.

The near side is original and probably more suited to fitting a repair panel.

I have a pair of wings purchased from Bill Davis but not feeling competent in doing the work myself, I have read complete wing replacement is tricky.

I'm based in North Kent but willing to travel.

  5. Hi

I met Bill from Rarebits at Beaulieu auto jumble last September and hoped to buy some lip type door seal for my Vitesse convertible.

Bill was short of it on the day but I am struggling to contact him thru facebook or a PM on this forum as I am hoping he may still have some available following the closure of Rarebits4classics.

Does anyone have some available that I could buy? ( I know Bill was the sole supplier of this)

Has anyone been in contact with him recently?

They look better on a Spitfire or a GT6 in my opinion. I took mine off my Vitesse and put them on my Son's Spitfire with only minor mods. It seemed to go a lot better for it too.

When you advertise them you could say that they will fit a Spitfire or a GT6 but will need minor mods - gives you a bigger customer base.

Excellent suggestion, I'll bear that in mind, thanks

I've got the Canley Exhaust on my car and it does look and sound good, although personally I felt it was a little too loud. It was resonating through the car, so I fitted a load of soundproofing in the boot area and made a carpet for the boot and now it's much quieter inside the car and sounds great top up or down.

I've added a pic of what the canley one looks like on my 13/60 Convertible, which has a Vitesse engine fitted.

Sounds and looks like just what I was looking for, thanks

  9. I am looking for honest opinions and options for my Mk2 Vitesse  that I purchased recently.

The PO has recently fitted Phoenix twin exhaust pipes, connected with a Y piece to the original manifold and although it sounds great, in my opinion it just looks too bulky and ugly from the rear.

Am I alone in this opinion or have any Vitesse owners fitted an alternative sports system that closely retains the original look from the rear but will give me the growl of the Phoenix pipes?

I had in mind selling these on and investing in an alternative...

    Thanks

    Pete

Thanks all for your advice, seals and bearings are on order - diff is out ready to work on.

I'll let you know how it goes...

Thanks to all of the great tips and advice from you guys all went to plan and the job is done.

I used a 1mm cutting disc to cut the old bearings almost fully through then a chisel to remove.

Had them both removed within 10 mins ...

New seals fitted and replacement bearings drifted on with no issues.

    Thanks once again everyone!

  11. My diff is leaking badly from all three seals, no problem with replacing the pinion seal but I have read of issues removing the output shaft bearings without a press.

Is cutting/grinding the bearings from the shafts and replacing the bearings an option anyone has gone for?

Also will the new bearings drift on fairly easily without damaging them, maybe placing the shafts in a freezer for a while and warming the bearings?

When re dooing me own engin,  I used a seal wid a double lip,
as me own pully had grooves init,
I got mine frae Chris Witor.   look into it.

    M

    Thanks M

The Payen seal I have bought as a replacement is supposedly a double lip seal, one inner sprung seal but the outer looks like a finer dust seal to me, was yours a double sprung seal?

Maybe I need to call Chris Witor ...

It can be an issue. One club forum (dolomite possibly?) Has mentioned shortening the tensioning spring sonthe lip seals better on the crank. The other issue is the replacement  type are usually thinner, but I think the lip still sits in the same place.
The payen seal should work, I used to keep them "in stock"  because of the repro reputation. Of course the suppliers will  probably say the sell loads and rarely have a problem, and then it is down to poor fitting technique.
However, none of this explains why thecseals are thinner, unless they are much cheaper/more common and should still do the job.

    Thanks Clive...

  14. Just looking for feedback on an issue I have had with a timing cover oil seal on a herald block that is now leaking noticeably after only 1100 miles use.

Bought from rimmers as part of a timing chain replacement kit and fitted in January, crankshaft pulley has no sign of wear to cause the problem and prior to fitting there was only minimal seepage from the one I removed that has been in place for many years.

Wondering if anyone had experienced similar problems.

Have now purchased a Payen replacement so hoping for a longer life from this one....

Dependant on how long the rear end has been un maintained
If the spring is OK you may have `jammed` the trunnions in the bearing housing into a position of no return
So it may be prudent to lift the car and release the trunnion bolts(if they will) and retighten when in the correct postion
Imagine being on a push bike  and you fall off and twist the handlebars off centre, and you are then in a situation of twisting the bars back central, unless you undo the handlebar extension to allow twisting it back its stuck firm.
Same scenario by releasing the trunnion bolt and lifting up to recentralise

This is now where you come back and say ...the trunnion bolts are seized ,how do I get them out

You were spot on with the trunnions, the near side was fine and apoears to have had a new bolt fitted by the previous owner however the off side was completely jammed.

Nothing would shift the bolt and I ended up removing the hub and driveshaft from the car and carefully cut the bolt either side of the trunnion to remove it and then managed to remove the bolt remains and metal sleeve.

The sleeve is completely fused to the bolt.

Just waiting for rimmers to deliver a trunnion overhaul set and new bolt and nut.

    Go-faster-'stance'?

Can you post the picture the right way round, I'm finding it hard to assess the level of camber on that as the photo is upside down.

Apologies all, image appears correct on my tablet but now on a laptop as you say upside down.

    Here it is...
