  1. Looking at the tensioner, the broken bit would certainly explain the noise but not a lack of power. There's plenty of tension left in the remaining half to hold the chain pretty well tensioned and, if anything, a slightly slack chain will make the engine go a bit better by allowing the valve timing to change slightly - Vitesse's I've had in the past always seemed to pick up better before a new timing chain was fitted although they were smoother afterwards.

  2. CT is running a Treasure Hunt on Sunday, June 4th in the Bedfordshire Area. Full details can be found at  https://www.clubtriumph.co.uk/treasure-hunt/ and it is recommended that you download and read the Supplementary Regulations (SRs) as they contain important information about what the event involves and what you will need to bring with you. That said, it's a bit of fun and none too serious so don't fret, you don't need to be an experienced navigator and you don't need an RS Clubmans Licence or anything like that.

  3. Hi Guys, this year's DPMR will run on Sunday March 5th in the Beds/Herts/Cambs area. It will retain the usual format starting with breakfast for those who require it and finishing at a pub with a normal Sunday lunch menu. The Rally will be somewhat shorter than before at around 60 miles and will feature fewer sections with simpler plotting than last year.

    We hope to have a full entry list once entry opens, which shouldn't be too long now although we don't have a definite date at present. The entry fee will probably only be £10 per car as you will be responsible for paying for your own food and drinks, this also means that there is no need to pre-order as such, although we may need to give the pub an indication on lunch numbers - if so we will contact entrants nearer the time.

    Keep your eyes peeled for the entry opening which will be announced here first

In my experience if changing from DOT4 type to silicon type without a complete strip, clean, seal change some of the old fluid remains in the system and leaches back out over time which means that repeated fluid renewal is required over many months/years to get rid of all of it and even if it is OK to do that it doesn't seem a good idea.

    Silicon is great if you have a leaky cylinder as it doesn't dissolve the paint on your bulkhead and it probably lasts longer than DOT4 but be warned, it does still need changing every few years. When new it usually has a strong deep purple (smoke on the water?) colour but this fades over time and ends up a pale coffee colour if left in the system for too long, so renew when it becomes noticeably paler.

    I would also advise those 'press on' drivers not to use it as, if it overheats (I've seen this several times on track days and Alpine passes) it turns to jelly and, unlike DOT4 type fluids, doesn't return to a useable liquid state, albeit not as good as before boiling, which requires the whole system to be purged and refilled with fresh fluid which isn't easy by the side of the road halfway up an Alp.

    In short, if yours is predominantly a show/light use car then you may be better off with silicon fluid but if not and if you are likely to get the brakes pretty hot, use Super DOT4, DOT4 Plus or even RBF (race stuff) with a higher b.p. and change it at least every 2 years.

    The difference between a Herald and the heavier Vitesse, plus personal preference, will dictate the choice of pad material. I use 1144s on 2000s as they're heavier cars and Green Stuff can fade badly on those but I only ever had one issue on the Herald at Castle Combe when I set fire to the caliper seals although the brakes hardly faded at all.

To finish answering the question and provide a little extra info; the OE brake master has a 0.625" bore which is fine for a std setup but if you want a bit more stopping power without having to go mad and change everything, you can fit a remote servo which improves things a lot. The problem then is increased pedal travel which is best countered by fitting the 0.70" master from some later cars (GT6 etc) or, if you can find one, a 0.75" one but don't go any bigger than that - even if you find something which looks like it will work - it won't.

    There are 3 different bores of rear wheel cylinder and I would advise using the smallest (5/8" or 0.625" in old money) ones and also upgrading the front pads to the larger (Dolly Sprint pattern) ones which fit the later 13/60 calipers/discs fine and give a little more contact area than Herald/Spit. As you don't have a heavy car you can get away with Green Stuff or if you are deaf, have a loud stereo or habitually wear ear defenders, Mintex 1144s or equivalent, which stop incredibly well, don't seem to fade ever and will drown out the noise of a Russian artillery strike even when visiting the  Ukraine................

    Motul RBF 600 fluid or similar will complete your braking upgrade to the good old British 'jolly impressive' level, if not quite 'I've just won the bragging war down the pub' grade which some 'experts' on other Forums might possibly, on a bad day, recommend by using other products, some from well known 'snake oil' distributors. 

    I aren't no engineer (strictly speaking) but have built loads of these and prevented them from mingling with scenery over the years - you pays your money and you takes your choice.

  8. There were two people who were granted entry at the same time as CT members. Nigel and I wanted to extend them the same courtesy which they have always extended to all CT members for the last twelve years or more at Bedford CC, especially now that Beds CC is no longer an active MsUK affiliated club. That seemed only fair and the least we could do just on this one occasion.

  9. I can tell you that an enormous amount of time, discussion, thought and research has gone into this, much of it by Chris Shaw who is CT's Carbon Balancing bod, and that he has gone back to the FBHVC numerous times with questions, suggestions and recommendations to which I must say they have been satisfyingly responsive and reactive.

    In the wake of earlier 'Carbon Offset' attempts on CT events with private companies some years ago when the subject first came up, which never produced the kind of accountability which we wanted, we (the Committee) have been much warier this time and have been asking some fairly pointed questions about this scheme. It is only after having received believable assurances on the accountability question and also our insistence on knowing where the trees will be planted when that happens and that they will not subsequently be harvested and not automatically replaced, for example that we have opted for the FBHVC scheme.

    It is also worth mentioning that as an early adopter of the scheme we have have had a pretty disproportionately large input/influence on how the scheme is structured for such a relatively small club and that, to date, we have only 'signed up' for a few of our events to use the 'Event Mileage' side of it and of course to publish details of the 'Personal Membership' side so that members can decide for themselves whether or not to join.

    There is a pretty comprehensive article on all this from Chris Shaw which will appear in the March issue of Club Torque, which is currently under construction, and I hope that this will inform much more fully than this Forum post.

Hi all, please note that as from this month North London and Herts Area will be meeting at the Duke of York on the A1000 (Barnet Road) bang on the border of Potters Bar and Barnet at Ganwick Corner. There has also been a change of Area Organiser with Ellis Stokes and Dale Barker sharing the role now that Chris Banks has found it too difficult to make meetings due to a change in his working hours. As many others have already stated Jacob, new rubber really isn't rubber anymore and although NOS (i.e. OE) rubber bushes are often very good you should inspect them carefully before buying as they're going to be several decades old and if they have been subject to sunlight they will have degraded.

    As many have also stated most cheap poly bushes aren't much better but if you stick with Superpro or Superflex these will be best for your car. They are of course more expensive, but you get what you pay for.

The DPMR is a 12 Car Navigational Rally run entirely in Hertfordshire on  the morning of Sunday 20th June with 'signing on' from around 08.30 at The Lytton Arms in Old Knebworth.   13. There is no particular reason why you shouldn't run at +0.040" but I would advise checking the oversizes of piston available before going any bigger. There may be +0.050" available and will probably be +0.060" but that's as big as you ever want to go and if you're building a little screamer of an engine you might not want to go any bigger than you already have at +0.040".

    That will, of course, require a replacement block unless you're planning on trying to replace the liners which I don't recommend. A good used std or up to +0.020" block would be best.
