  1. I've changed the discs & pads and overhauled the rears too and mot'd the car (woo hoo!) so it lives to drive another year. Was amazed how bad the discs were: such an idiot not to notice first time... Duh.. Should point out though that getting hold of a pair of front discs was NOT easy!! Rimmer Bros no longer do them & although plenty on eBay they're 'out of stock' when you try to buy. Smaller size rear shoes also nla !! Be warned: if you think your brakes will need overhauling any time soon start looking for parts now is my advice...

    Exhaust!

Been quoted £289 for a stainless exhaust (full system) by longlife for me acclaim. Is this a good price and are they (the company and their products) any good? Anyone used them? Given £289 equates to 80 pints of Guiness in my local I want to be 100% before I make such a huge financial commitment :)
  3. Update: the discs are shot! Cannot believe I didn't notice first time round, but then that's what comes of having only half your mind on the job in hand.... New discs it is!!
  4. Yes I did all of those things as you described. I guess the discs must be worn and new pads have made the problem worse(?) suppose I'll have to take it all apart. Again....

    Brakes!

I changed the front pads on my acclaim (I have done this before many times including on this actual car) when I went to test drive it the brake pedal bounces up and down under braking!? But why? Fairly certain I never damaged anything whilst changing them and followed normal procedures as per manuals, any ideas why this has happened?
  6. Interesting info Jon: I've now replaced leads dizzy rotor etc with brand NEW parts & sorted leaking vacuum hose. It starts much better but not as good as pre-puddle (which was always 1st time instantly) recon you're bang on with the moisture in the distributor theory! I'll wait for some hot weather and follow your advice (might get a hot day sometime in 2017...)
  7. I had the same prob last year... Posted on here but v few replies. Found a NOS one on e bay listed under ROVER Acclaim for 40 quid so try that. Good luck!
  8. It would appear I've lead you up the garden path- apologies! Yes there was crud in the air cleaner housing. The filter/plugs/leads/dizzy etc even the coil were all changed with spares I had from an acclaim I broke a few years back.. However, have just noticed hissing (air drawn in) around offside carb so I'm thinking vacuum pipe/gasket? Would certainly explain bad starting/crap idle! Nothing to do with taking the car for a swim, but then my life is punctuated with unfortunate coincidences.... Thanks for all the replies I'll try & look at it at the w/end ;-)
  9. I get my stuff off eBay (filters mostly) other stuff from local ( independent) motor factors. He gets most stuff same day (not that I've needed anything out of the ordinary over 10 years..) everything I've bought has been ok.  well,  so far! :-/
  10. Sorry should prob start at the beginning ( usually the best place) car has run like a dream during 10 years of ownership & daily use, until... I drove through a mahoosive puddle on my way to work (it was 4.30 am and dark) car cut out: managed to restart after 10 mins of trying but run like a bag of spanners: poor idle etc. changed dizzy/rotor/plugs wd40'd everything etc. now think its a fueling  issue (overfuelling?) which was what the mot tester seemed to think on Friday (when it passed with no advisories as usual!)
  11. They're NGk bpr5es it's not the plugs I'm sure the car is over fuelling.. Think it's either a carb or fuel pump issue :-(
  12. 5149 wrote:are the plugs wet? if so is it over fueling cheers Ben Yes they do seem/smell a bit petroly ?! Carb or fuel pump? Just noticed that the clear inline fuel filter is empty of fuel after the car has been stood, so the fuel must be draining in whist stationery? Anyone had any probs with the acclaim fuel pump? Mines done 75k miles...
  13. Fitted new spark plugs: car started. Switched car off, wouldn't re-start. Cleaned plugs & car started. Switched car off wouldn't re-start. Cleaned plugs: car started..and so it goes on... You get the picture..! Anyone any ideas WHY!!??
