  1. I have just emailed all entrants the following update on progress about the event.  If you are an entrant and have not received it please contact me by email or PM.

Hello all Coast 2 Coast 2022 Entrants

It is a while now since the excitement of the event’s initial announcement and you will not have heard anything from me since.  The team has been working hard and we are completing everything that needs doing to make the event a success.  This mail is to update you on what has been done and to ask you to do some things in preparation for the event.

    Entry List

The Entry List for the event sold out in 8 ½ hours, so there are a full 50 entrants. There is a healthy spread of seasoned campaigners and first time entrants.  There have also been 12 potential entrants on The Reserve List.  Since opening the entry two of the entrants and two of the reserves have had to drop out, so currently we have 50 entrants and 8 reserves.

    MsUK Permit

In order to be able to run the event we need to have a Motorsport UK Permit for a Touring Assembly. This shows that we have been through the proper procedure to get the event cleared with all relevant UK motoring and legal authorities.  This is more than just red tape as MsUK have a positive input into the event.  Indeed without their flexibility and co-operation we would not have been able to run last year.  We have obtained a Permit and its number is 125981.  I am obligated to tell you that but it may be handy information so please make a note of it.

    Road Book

Howard Brissenden has been preparing a Road Book to cover the essential instructions for the event and the route.  He will give you the route and the Road Book by email in early June.  The route will be in the form of .gpx files for use with Garmin and Tomtom satnavs. You will need to know how to upload these files to your satnav and as we run the event you will need to know how to delete waypoints after we pass them in case there is a change of route due to an obstructed road. It will be useful to install the speed camera warning database for your model of satnav and Garmin users may also find that their smartphone link is also worthwhile.

Additionally the route will be available as Google Routes. This can be used with smartphones and pads. It can also be used to transfer the route to a road atlas before the event.

    WhatsApp Group

Howard has set up a WhatsApp group which will use the mobile phone numbers and team names you have given in your entry form.

If you do not want your number added to this list for any reason or have an alternative number you want to use, please contact Howard as soon as possible by email  ( howard.brissenden@gmail.com ) or via the CT Forum Private Message Service.

If you are unfamiliar with WhatsApp, it is a free and secure app that can be installed on any reasonably recent Android or Iphone from their App stores. It provides fast and easy to use text/photo/phone/video chat service.

You will be able to contact Howard directly via his WhatsApp address throughout the event and the organizing team will be sending out updates via the group that we have set up. He will also set up a smaller group for the organising team and if anyone contacts him in an emergency during the event they can then be added to this group so we can provide them with the maximum support.

If you have any questions please email Howard or post them on the forum.

    Logistics

If you have not got your overnight accommodation booked, The Premier Inn under construction in Porthmadog will not be completed until 16th September. Travelodge is reported to have some availability. Caernarfon and Bangor are not far away and have more hotels than Porthmadog.

    Car Parade Video

The Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railway would like to make a video of a parade of our cars running next to one of their trains along the Cob to Minffordd Station with their drone.  CT will also be able to share this footage.  There is room for 9 cars at the station.  It would be normal to ask for volunteers for this, but because of wanting as many different types of Triumph as possible and the complications of the Boston Lodge visits we will be “inviting” entrants to take part in this parade.  John Bell is organising this.  John is a CT member and TR6 owner.  He is also a long standing member of The FWHR’.  He knows both organisations very well.  He will contact selected entrants about this in May and give you the full details of what he would like you to do.  The cars, entrants and crew will assemble at the FWHR Harbour Station at 09:00 on Saturday June 25th and sign into the C2C event and receive event Vinyls.  Cars will be photographed at the station and will leave the station in conjunction with the 09:45 train.

Participants in this parade will not be able to take part in the morning visit to Boston Lodge works as there will not be time to complete the video and get back to catch the train to Boston Lodge.

    Updating Your Entry Information

Very few entrants have provided all the required information for the event.  This is needed to help us run the event and to satisfy MsUK permit requirements.  Please would you check your information and update it during the remainder of this month Thank you very much.  It will be a big help.

    Q & A

I have set up a Q & A thread in the Forum under Events > C2C > C2C 22 Q&A.  If anyone has any questions I will get them answered for you in this thread.

    Best wishes, Chris

  2. I don't have any details, but it is along the lines you are mentioning.

Roger, that is why clubs like ours need to band together, as that way we are stronger.  The FBHVC  represent all member car clubs and have a voice that can be heard by politicians.  CT is a member of the FBHVC.  Some of the money spent supporting their scheme goes to supporting their lobbying.

  3. I have been so busy recently with the C2C and writing aforementioned article that I have not see this thread in the Forum.  Thank you all who have contributed to this thread.

The impact of classic vehicle usage globally on the environment is negligible. However we try to save the planet will not make any noticeable difference.  Therefore our problem is not saving the Earth, but saving the club.  There is a major risk that legislation will curb the use of our vehicles almost to the point of not being able to use them (see Germany) and misinformed members of the public will make life very uncomfortable for our members when using their Triumphs. It is the perception of politicians and the public is the problem we need to address as a club.

By supporting The Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs (FBHVC) through Tree-V we are funding the campaign to limit government action on restricting the use of our cars.  No other scheme does this. The FBHVC  is an organisation established with the prime objective of protecting the future of our hobby through political and industrial lobbying to secure sympathetic legislation and continued fuel supplies. Club Triumph is a member of this organisation.

Planting trees is a statement of responsibility and acknowledgement of the global problem and the sticker shown by Darren is a physical sign of our commitment.  The FBHVC will issue to subscribers advice on self protection from aggressive  members of the public and CT will keep members up to date with best practice.

The Committee believes this course of action is is currently the best way to address this issue. Over time the scheme and the club will evolve to protect the club and its members.

  4. Hi All

All the places for the Coast 2 Coast 2022 have now been filled.  A Reserve List has been started.  There will inevitably be some entrants who will not be able to make it to the start, so if you are interested but have not already entered put your name on the reserve list.

    Chris

  5. Hi again All

Entry is now open and indeed Bruce has successfully entered.  All members of the club have been sent an email informing them that entry is open.

I appologise again for the delay, I was not expecting natural causes to intervene.

Thank you to Clive, Craig and Howard for their efforts to get us this far.  I hope all participants enjoy the event safely

    Chris

  6. Hi All

I am delighted to announce that entry to the C2C22 is now open.

I apologise for the delay in opening the event. Club Triumph will be unveiling our approach to Carbon Neutralisation in the March edition of Club Torque. This scheme has had to be developed ahead of the C2C22 in order to include it in the C2C22.  I am the Lead Organiser for both activities and have consequently been a bit busy.

To enter either go to the Club Shop and you'll find the Coast 2 Coast Store, or go to Events >> C2C22 >> How to Enter.  That will take you to the Shop.  I hope you will find it has been worth the wait.

    Chris

  7. Hi All

Thank you  for your patience. The website is currently being trialed and we have a few things to fix.  I just have to get some final mods over to the IT team for final tweaking.  The plan is to open entry at the week end.  When I have had feedback on the final mods I'll give a time for entry opening.

In the past there have always been more places than entrants, so unless there has been a big change, I expect there to be enough places.

    Cheers, Chris

  8. Hi Bruce

We have got the Committee stuff sorted.  It was to do with the to be announced in the next issue of Club Torque The Club approach to Carbon Balancing our emissions.  This will be applied to the C2C22. I have sent the information for the website to Clive and Craig to prepare to open entry so I expect that we can open entry during next week.  Keep a look out on the website.

Howard, I have some bad news for you.  The Regulations clearly state: "Vehicles: The event is open to any model of Standard or Triumph motor vehicle or special based upon a Standard or Triumph motor vehicle. The vehicle need not be owned by the main entrant."

To go round corners like that and to emit those noises:

    1.    Your car was clearly made by Scalextric

    2.   It probably had a Honda engine.

Therefore you will be excluded from the classification of finishers as your car did not comply with Regulations.  There is no appeal process.

.....great video almost like watching a special stage rally.

  9. On 26/11/2021 at 12:48, Don Cook said:

I seem to recall that a few years ago one of our colleagues was keen on a Summer Solstice Run (Lands End to Felixstow) but it had to be dropped from this forum because the club wouldn't support it as it wasn't an official event and would not meet MSA rules...or something like that.

    Don

That run, it would be to Lowestoft, would not be sanctioned by the MSA or MsUK as it is now know because of its Top Gear origins and the number members of the public doing it.

That run became the inspiration for the Coast 2 Coast Run, now shortly about to open its entry for the 4th running on 25th/26th June.

    Cheers, Chris

  10. Hi All, The Committee has some important business to discuss at the next Committee Meeting on Monday 31st January that affects the C2C22.  This means that Clive, Craig and I cannot start to finalise the C2C22 website until after this date, so Club Triumph will not be able to open the entry on 1st February as planned.

I am very sorry about this, but I do not anticipate that it will reduce anyone's opportunity to gain an entry or anyone's enjoyment of the event. I am not in a position to say when entry will be opened for the moment, but assure potential entrants no time will be wasted when we have the information and decisions we need.  Until then please be patient.....it's coming and it will be worth the wait!

  11. Hello All

I am sorry that I am late in posting the announcement from Club Torque.  I have been caught out and thought that it would be published next week.  I am working to open the entry on 1st February, but there is a complicating factor that may delay opening the entry by a few days. I will announce the opening of the entry on a separate thread.

The Coast 2 Coast Run 2022

The C2C Run is an event designed to be a challenging driving experience of about 400 miles, lasting about 12 hours driving time.  It is a different type of event to the RBRR and the 10CR, but takes the best features from both to seek out some of the best driving roads that can be found in the UK.  It is primarily about enjoyable driving. Planning is not difficult and plotting the route can be done in advance. Due to the nature of the roads used, navigating requires attention. There is also a social element through activities and meals held before and after the event.

Due to the location of the roads upon which the event is held in National Parks and uplands, the start and finish can located some distance from the main population centres.  We try to minimise the inconvenience but the event is a fairly high effort, high enjoyment challenge. It can be looked at as an event in four parts: getting to the start, the social event, the run and getting home. It offers entering crews an opportunity to visit parts of the country that are not usually driven during other Club Triumph events.

    The Coast 2 Coast 2022

Club Triumph is proud to announce the 2022 Coast 2 Coast Run. The 2022 event will be held during the night of Saturday and Sunday 25th and 26th of June.  It is intended that entry will open on 1st February. Entry and merchandising will be available solely through the Club Triumph Shop on the Website. Vehicle entrants must be club members, but they need not own the vehicle entered. Crew members need not be Club Triumph members. Club Triumph Regulations apply and can be viewed on the Website. Current MSUK and national Covid-19 requirements will be rigorously enforced. Please note that although a MSUK Permit will be applied for, entrants do not need an MSUK RS Clubman or other competition licence.  A thread will be opened on the Forum to provide the latest information to keep potential entrants up to date.

The provisional route of the event is to start at the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways Harbour Station, Porthmadog, to drive through the Snowdonia National Park and the Welsh Coast Road to Cardigan, then through The Black Hills and the Brecon Beacons to a mandatory rest stop immediately before crossing the Severn Bridge. After which the route continues through Cheddar Gorge and across Salisbury Plain, along the Weald to a well earned breakfast at The Pilot Inn, Dungeness. This is a distance of approximately 460 miles.

Entrants need to be aware that access to Porthmadog is restricted due to the mountainous terrain.  Saturday is the hotel changeover day so traffic in and out of Porthmadog is heavy and long delays are expected. Further, hotel accommodation is very limited, although a new Premiere Inn will be open by 25th June.  Getting there will require some planning and in view of the event’s social activity, described below, it is worth getting there, or near there, on Friday or even before. If you are going to book accommodation, book as soon as you have entered the event otherwise you may be disappointed.

    image.png.28f35f2cbf627fad80b86abc8b10eb58.png

The Starting point will be at The Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways Harbour Station, Porthmadog, LL49 9NF.  The dinner will be in the Spooner’s Cafe on the Station from 16:30.  Parking for entrants will be in The Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways reserved section of the Llyn Bach Car Park, which is close to the station. The event will start at 19:00.

    For more details see: https://www.festrail.co.uk/

There will be a mandatory stop at Magor Motorway Services Eastbound, NP26 3YL, on the M4. Most of the caterers will be closed, but WH Smiths will have Starbucks vending machines and sandwiches available. For more details see:  https://www.roadchef.com/locations/magor

The finish will be at The Pilot Inn, Dungeness, Kent, TN29 9NJ at around 08:00. Breakfast will be available from this time. For your route home afterwards the M20 is not too far away. For more details see:  https://thepilotdungeness.co.uk/

The route will be available as .gpx files for use on Garmin and Tomtom satnavs and these files will be available as Google routes for use on smart phones. From the .gpx files you will be able to transfer the route to a road atlas.

Entry will be limited to 50 cars. A reserve list will be maintained if the numbers exceed this.

It is intended that the carbon emissions created by this event will be offset through the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs’ Carbon Balancing Scheme (FBHVC).  At the time of writing (Early December 2021) this scheme has not been launched and full details are not known, but it should be operational in early 2022. Updates about the scheme will be posted on the C2C 2022 thread on the Forum as they become available. Planned participation in this scheme means that the price of the Coast 2 Coast 2022 cannot be finalised as I write.

The price will cover entry into the event, a contribution to the FBHVC Carbon Balancing scheme, car stickers and a finisher’s souvenir. Merchandise, if purchased, will be additional.  Food consumed at the restaurants is at the entrant’s expense (main courses will typically be around £10-£12). Fuel, car preparation, any tolls, fines etc., getting to and from the event are also at the entrant’s expense.

    The Social Activity

For this year’s additional social activity C2C 2022 entrants have been privileged to be offered a guided tour of the Ffestiniog Railway’s Boston Lodge Locomotive Works. The Ffestiniog Railway is the world’s oldest independent railway company, being established in 1836. It has World Heritage status. These works have just secured £4M funding to conserve and redevelop what is the oldest steam locomotive factory and operating works in the world, having manufactured steam locomotives in the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries.

The General Manager, Paul Lewin, will conduct two “money can’t buy” two hour tours of the works. These tours will take place from 10:30 to 12:30 and from 13:00 to 15:00. They will be informative and amusing. He will explain to you how steam locomotives are operated, maintained, rebuilt and built from new.  You can learn how steam locomotives work and Paul Lewin will answer your questions.  If you are interested in steam engines this is just too good to miss, you won’t get another opportunity like it!

In addition you can be a driver for a fiver.  If demand is sufficient, an engine will be in steam and event entrants can be “instructed” in driving a steam engine within the confines of the works. These events will need to be booked as purchases through the Club Triumph Shop on the Club Triumph Website.  Free for the tours, £5.00 to drive the locomotive.

There are many other interesting activities and sites to visit in the Porthadog area and if you have the time it is worth organising a mini-break in the area.  There are runs on the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways, there is Portmerion, home to The Prisoner TV series starring Patrick Mcgoohan and Snowdon National Park.

For those who like aircraft it may be possible to see NATO airforces training nearby in the famous Mach Loop, where after a bit of a clamber you can look down on aircraft flying at 500 feet and 500mph through the Corris Uchaf (A487 between Dolgellau and Machynlleth). For more information see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNmNVEJQsVU&t=747s

Club Triumph looks forward to seeing you in Porthmadog.

  12. Hi Carboy0 and all

I have only just noticed there has been some activity on the C2C forum. I apologize for not paying more attention. I have been focused in other areas of CT activity recently.

Thank you Howard, Mike and Clive for advising, all correct.  I hope to be making an announcement about the C2C22 in the new year.  It is being planned even as I write and it should be a good one, if we can pull off our plan!  It will be held on the 25th/26th June.  The entry will open a few months after the announcement.  There is some IT to do yet.

There is normally a section on the website under events describing the C2C.  I would refer you to that, but it is not currently shown.  I'll see if I can get it reinstated.

  13. Hi NIck,  Chas & all

The guy from Hereford should see this video, maybe it would make him rethink.

It goes to show that there are very few people that really know enough about this subject to make rational decisions. To every solution there is usually a downside, and often this is an inconvenient truth for a group with a vested interest.  Clearly BEVs are not the panacea that many make them out to be, in fact in the short term they make the situation worse because of their up front emissions caused by their manufacture.  I have been sceptical about this for some time. I have just done the fag packet calculation below and am surprised by the result.

My daily driver is a 1993 Saab 900.  It is 27 years old and in good condition with 175,000 miles on the clock.  If 14 years is a normal lifespan for a car this one had had 2 lives already, and in the condition it is in could have 3. The CO2 cost of this car has been approximately construction; 12 tons, operation, fuel 60 Tons, spares & tyres etc say, 4 tons.  Equals 76 Tons or an average of 0.0004 tons per mile. The CO2 Cost of a BEV with a life of say 14 years? Construction 25 Tons, electricity generation 8 tons, spares and tyres say 1 ton (without a replacement battery) and 70,000 miles life. Equals  34 tons or 0.0005 tons per mile.  There is quite a bit of latitude in these figures, but they won't be too significantly inaccurate. I think that this shows (approximately) that the lifetime generation of CO2 for a BEV and a classic car are of the same order.

It shows that the BEV is, short term, more damaging to the environment than an old i/c car because of the up front manufacturing CO2 cost and the continuing CO2 cost of electricity generation, which is far from CO2 free.  This does not consider the CO2 cost of constructing wind farms with their imported concrete and steel, mostly from distant shores, which can total 400,000 Tons for a very large wind farm. Nor does it consider that most BEV drivers will replace their car after about 3 years.

Constructing a new car of any type is about the worst thing we can do short term, maybe should concentrate on getting more life out of what we have got already.

It would seem to me that the people in the above video have some idea of what they are talking about, however the view of the man from Hereford prevails.  We will have to work on it.

  14. Chas, you wrote

"On a recent trip to Hereford in my Stag, I was accosted by a chap in the hotel car park and confronted with the idea that I was single-handedly killing the planet.  Firstly, I pointed out that my car was 50 years old - or had lived the lifetimes of 8 -10 modern cars and was made mostly of steel, leather and wood. Not plastic, lithium, cadmium, nickel and all the other heavy metals or materials that really are polluting the planet.  Neither did it require extra miles of copper (mined in Africa and shipped here) to allow it to plug in, let alone 1000 tons of concrete to keep a windmill upright.  It was, therefore, the ultimate in re-use and recycling and was a lot more eco than the battery driven monster that he was driving."

An excellent response.  Please may I quote this in my future work?

I witnessed a similar incident to this at Wetherby Services during the RBRR.  It is precisely the kind of thing that that we want to be able to avoid / deflect.  A major aim of the scheme that I am working on will be to help CT members who find themselves in this type of situation and it is one of the reasons why we need to work with the FBHVC and other clubs and tackle this at a national level as well as club level.

2,000 miles in a car doing 25mpg generates approximately 1 ton of CO2.  CT during its events generates about 200 Tons CO2 pa.  That would take 2000 broad leaf trees to offset that amount of CO2.  But there is a problem, it would take about 15 years for the trees to grow big enough to absorb that amount and then they would only absorb that amount of CO2 for another 15 years.
