I fitted HID's to my GT6 with the clear lens headlamp bowls (these are a must for correct beam deflection and avoiding blinding other) I think they are just fantastic....fitted them for the RBRR in 2012 and I wouldn't use halogens again..

Where did you get them from?

Let me know how you get on fitting them.

RBRR isn't until October so I might change my bulbs to night breakers in the meantime and see what improvements that gives before taking the plunge in buying a HID kit.
But it would be good to know how you get on.
    Cheers

  3. Thanks for the comments. My intention isn't to blind other drivers or be illegal. So I would ensure the dipped beam is dipped.
Happy to get a complete unit including the headlamp unit.
Just wondering whether anyone has done it before and if they could recommend a unit to buy?

  4. Hi all, after some recommendations here.

I've got Halogen lights lights on my spit with relays. However although they are ok on Main beam, they really seem to need a bit more brightness on dipped. Especially for the RBBR.

I want to keep the car looking original so don't want to add additional lights at the front. Plus there isn't much room.
So I was thinking of upgrading to HID lights. I've seen a kit on ebay for £80 and moss seem to do one for about £170. A big price difference. Has anyone fitted a HID kit and can recommend one?

    Thanks in advance for help.
    Cheers

  5. Your misfiring problem when hot may not be the coil, it could be petrol evaporation. The carbs sit right above the exhaust which gets very hot and in hot weather the petrol can evaporate before reaching the engine.

I would try replacing the coil first but if that doesn't solve your problem, I would possible fit heat shields by your carbs and ensure there is good flow of air around them and possibly some exhaust insulation tape. Although I have only fitted heat shields to my car and she runs fine now.
    Good luck.

  6. Hi

Has anyone got a programmable 123 tune distributor fitted to their Spitfire? If so what settings/map have you got?

I've looked at the manual and I 've set mine up as shown below, but I'm not sure if I've got the right settings especially the retard curve

    Thanks
    Paul

Spitfire ran without fault to Gaydon and back again.
We did have pullover once, but that wasn't because of the car. The passenger was hungover and needed to be sick!

However got a bit wet inside the car. I did work on the header rail yesterday and although it is much better than before it still leaks.

    So final jobs are:
    Reseat header liner
    Fix some cup holders
    Change oil
    Clean and fix stickers

Can't wait for the start. Although gutted to hear Pimperne stop has been dropped so no cakes!  :-(

  8. I don't know what needles I had fitted originally. I've got K&N filters, stub stacks, sports exhaust and manifold and a standard unleaded head. Rest of the engine is standard.
Also apparently it was mainly running on the back carb up to 30mph. So he had to balance the carbs as well.
I was there for  nearly 3 hours. It took longer than normal because the guy would adjust the needle, refit it, check the power range and then repeat the process until it was perfect.
Very happy with the results. Although kind of wished I saved some money and went for a regular 123 Distributor as I haven't taken advantage of its programmable features.

Which needles did you use in the end?
Its great when you see results at the rolling road ! I was well chuffed with the torque improvements I made using my home comedy air box!

After sorting out a sticking choke on my carbs, he proceeded to adjust the needles.
He used my existing needles but filed them to give the right mixture at mid range and high range. Apparently it was too lean at high speeds.

    Hi Paul,
I wouldn't mind an extra 20bhp myself, whereabouts did you take it in the end?
    Cheers,
    Floyd.

I took her to ATSpeed Racing in Rayleigh. A father & son business. The father did the tuning on my car as he know SU carbs well. He once worked at an old Triumph, Jaguar, Rover dealership. They were recommended by another club triumph member on this forum.

    Their website address is: http://www.atspeedracing.co.uk/

  11. Took her in for a rolling road tune.
At the begining she was only producing just over 50 BHP at the end she was producing 70BHP!
Although this wasn't down to the distributor programming. It was spot on at the beginning so didn't need any adjustment. The adjustments were all made to the SU carbs and especially the needles.
As you can imagine the difference is brilliant. Car revs alot smoother and has a lot more pull mid range and at motorway speeds.
    Very Happy :-)

  12. Car 85 - Help needed.

My friend who is doing the first RBRR for the first time is having a few issues with his Vitesse Convertible.

1st Issue. Gearbox has packed up.  However, he hasn't given up. Car is in the garage to have the gearbox reconditioned/replaced.

2nd Issue. Seats are a little bit knackered and being original don't recline.

I know this is a VERY long shot, but has anyone (who lives near the Kent or Essex area) got a spare reclining seat (we only need one for the passenger side) that will fit a Vitesse Convertible that he could borrow for the RBBR?

    Hi,
Please keep us posted on the results,
I have bought one months ago but still waiting to install it.....

    dirk

Will do. Shes booked in for tomorrow.
It doesn't take long to fit. It took me about 90 mins but I was also cooking chicken on a BBQ as well.
Probably less than 1 hour to fit. Even without the tune she is running better now.
