  1. I'm nice and prepared like normal, just waiting for stuff to dry...

Obviously, not in the Herald. I started it for the first time since the RBRR last Sunday though, which isn't bad going for me these day!

  2. I've been pretty unwell since Saturday and stuck in bed since Thursday so thought I'd try and be productive and replace the broken wheel studs from the RBRR. Bit of a mistake as it turns out,  for two reasons;

    1 - I'm now back in bed

2 - I've found yet another rust hole

Annoying as it's not like the car is 55+ years old, sits outside all year and coverd about 2300 miles last year...

Anyhoo, it leaves me considering fibreglass options again.

    Years ago I fancied a Sammio but I'm not overly keen on the proportions. But for a while now I've been keeping an eye on the Formosa. Two issues (again);

1 - it'd mean no more RBRR for this car due to no roof

2 - my engine is about 6 inches further back than standard so there may be packaging issues.

What are peoples thoughts or experiences? I'm done with a welding session each year but I don't want to recycle the car either!

  3. A flat ring spanner which can also ratchet - who wouldn't use one?

Although all of mine are broken. The first time I put them on a nut they always want to turn the wrong way, no matter what I do. Put it down in the exact same orientation and when I pick it up it's all magically changed internally... 🤔

  4. Very few people go on Facebook to go to a specific group for a browse. They end up on there as a result of their feed which they're using. Consequently, people end up using Facebook more than other sites through a mixture of convenience and conditioning.

If Facebook was used intelligently and with guidance, it's an excellent source of driving people to an external website.

Any content on Facebook relating to the club should link to the relevant information on the club site. As an example, "hey guys, quick update on venue change can be found here. To see more information or ask questions please click the link." But, laziness and lack of interest to invest 30 seconds into a post means it doesn't happen.

Of course, one way around that is for the club to create all of the local groups on Facebook and add admins to the group. That way they can offer guidance and support when needed, have the option of mass posting/advertising for national events and prevents the issue of no one being in control of a local group page.

  5. So, I appear to have booked a flight to Edinburgh last night and today worked out what to do about having a bed to sleep in. 🤣

I'll be there 12th-15th December and staying in the centre. Obvious choices of stuff to do are the Castle, Arthur's, ghosts tour and I hear there's a Christmas Market...

I'm putting this over to y'all for suggestions on what to do on this highly organised and not at all last minute trip idea.

    Hi Paul,

Maxingspeed rods were for sale on ebay, does one have to go directly to them to purchase?

    Good luck with it all.

I've bought a diesel heater for the van directly from them, if you're worried about buying that way.

  7. I was just about to make a post when I got a message saying just what I was about to.

Jo ain't to picture frame kinda gal. I can't see this being a problem other than extra work load ticking a box on a spreadsheet. But I thought I'd ask nice and early.

Is it possible to have a tinkered for her when we order them?

I was impressed by Alan Chatterton's headlights on the 2018 RBRR and he told me the bulbs were 'Nighteyes' (more recently re-branded as 'Novsight') so on returning home I ordered a pair of H4 bulbs on ebay (for only £19.89!!). They were nicely packaged and seemed very nice quality for the astonishingly low price. They did not have integral fans, rather relying on ribbed aluminium heat sinks for cooling. They have tiny LED light sources intended to mimic exactly the positions of dip and main beam filaments in a conventional incandescent bulb. Having heard horror stories about uncontrolled beams from cheap far eastern LED bulbs, before I fitted them I pulled the TR up a few metres from my garage door and carefully marked the cut off of the dipped beam pattern from my existing Philips Racing Vision halogen H4s. I then replaced these by the Novsight bulbs and repeated the exercise. The beam pattern on dip was identical with an excellent, sharp asymmetric cut off. These bulbs illuminate the nearside kerb or verge well ahead with a very impressive spread of light and cause no inconvenience to oncoming drivers. As I am still running a dynamo a big bonus of the LED bulbs is the dramatically reduced power consumption. It is still odd to switch on the headlights and see the ammeter needle hardly deflect!

I particularly appreciated these LED bulbs on the 2021 RBRR and after nearly five years they continue to impress on any night drive. I see no reason to upgrade to Philips or other more exotic LEDs at £80+ a pair. How much better can they be?

These are what I have in the Herald. I had the active cooling (with a fan) version in my old van.

In the Herald there been an improvement in that I expect them to last longer than halogen, which has been a problem with my firmer suspension. In the van, I went from wondering how I didn't hit what I'd just driven passed which I could only see at 2 feet distance, to actually being able to see!

  10. Bit baffled here.

I've just gone to the post office and used form V112 to declare a vehicle MOT exempt. I asked the lady if she had to tick a box or anything for my own piece of mind and she said there was no need, it just pops up with a marker on the system already.

This leaves me confused. The gov.uk site says we need to use form V112, yet the lady at the counter said it makes no difference. I've also taxed a car 40+ years old online when it doesn't have an MOT.

Is the system a bit crap?

Looks like a scam to me - having to pay before you can see the forum or anything else...

Correction - their forum looks quite busy with plenty of posts

It's been going since 2004 (I think) and organises two huge events at Goodwood and Malory Park currently. With live streaming from the Quick 60 events at both. I've been a member since 2013 and other people on this site use it. The paying option is to support the forum and help fund it for those who choose to. All access is free.

Deffo not a scam. Just thought it was cool it had my car and a RBRR sticker on the page. I'd never noticed before.

  12. LED bulbs aren't the problem, the lamps they are in is. I've got LED bulbs in mine and they're in modern plastic lamps which use the reflector to create the beam and not the lens. I do worry they are too bright as the volume of lumens can be a problem, but I'm confident my beam pattern is good. The kick up on the left is pronounced, which is why I try not to spend too much time overtaking. I'm happy for people to advice on my thoughts if I've been behind them. I don't get flashed by oncoming vehicles.

Here are my lights, dipped and main.

  13. Re-wire whole car. Was on my list two years ago and considering it randomly cut out on bumps all weekend I think it's time to sort it.

Replace bent wheel. I've got 14" to go on, but need to refurb them.

Strip Down UJ's on half shaft to inspect where the noise was coming from.

Build a whole new exhaust after the back section split into two just after the start. The front section is rusty too, so may as well do the whole thing.

Fit new wheel studs after one snapped. But, seeing as the diff has a mise now, at least one UJ is iffy and the whole back end took a pounding, I think it's time to finish the subaru conversion I started in 2020.

Gotta stich more of the hood now as well.

I think that's it. I was surprised by how much decided to end it's life or at least attempt to on the run. I'm also surprised it finished.

If you had joined the group you would have found out it was much more than a small group discussing spares. In fact it is still very active with 82 messages today 3 days after the event. Discussing everything from scotch pies to mpg.

Also the live360 app gave live tracking for those who wanted it and you could have sent the link to anyone you liked. It was interesting seeing who had got the furthest up the A1 on Friday.

The A1 comment was exactly what I was thinking! That's one point when we used it too. The satnav files from the forum sent us that way and to be honest, at the time is was a bit peeved at their error but as the messages came through about the water and fog I was quite happy in the end!

Our (Team Spotlight) funny moment was when I was too impatient to wait for the men's toilet at Skiatch and used the ladies only to watch the lock fall apart when I shut the door leaving me locked in there!

I urgently rang my co-driver Davemate, who didn't answer, and then rang Richard Warr who did answer and came and released me from my prison. 😅

You're lipstick did really set off the colour of your eyes too.
