  1. Wont be too long till my Zetec SE conversion kit is tested and the how too sold. It was Quite easy, requires only one custom part (engine mounts) the rest can be bought from suppliers. It requires no chassis mods and only a small bit to the tub. It's 100bhp stock and capable of 220bhp N/a if you want that much and weighs much less than the spit unit. I'm doing it so there is another option for people rather than haveing endless issues with triumph engine tuning as I did. Time will tell if it catches on.

    Thanks all.
Yes it needs to be reliable of course, it's not a race car and I don't want to have to rebuild it regularly.
What sort of power is attainable from a 1500 block with such mods?

1500 will pull 100hp as I said above but these engine just were not designed for this kind of out put and the more oomph you get the more spannering you have to do to keep it there and the quicker things go wrong. If you want reliable and more power, for the same cash as tuning a spit motor you can have a Zetec with full efi and a 5 speed box for the same price. Totally reliable, better mpg etc etc. Each to there own but I've tried the tuning co. before and lost alot of cash.

Now, you have my interest because I'm also looking to up the power of my 1300 to a usable and reliable 100 horse power.

John I know what your thinking and thats exactly what I wanted from my spit engine but it aint that simple and 100hp takes alot of faffing to keep right. Just change the engine.

  4. Place parcel tape on the seat sticky side up. When he walks on it it will stick. This freaks cats out, best to stick a couple of lines together so that it forms a little carpet. Ha Ha.

Another option which would be very funny would be to get a spring and fit it under the seat foam. Have it trigger when he stands on it........ Cat-a-pult !!!!

Or even better if you have a 1500 they had a seatbelt switch and you could wire it to a pair of air horns. Ha Ha

  6. I have never had a problem bleeding the clutch by the normal procedure. The master cyclinder moves alot of fluid so all air gets pushed out quick time. The only reason to hold the master deperssed is for systems that move little fluid as the air stays. Could be multiple problems.

  7. Ok the spitfire off set is like 13mm or something so they will be too far one way so they may catch. You can get the offset reduced so they will fit correctly but only if there is enough material. I wanted modern wheels so I used these:

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Triumph-Spitfire-GT6-TR7-TR8-Lotus-Alloy-Wheel-Adapters-/251291524195?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a82245c63

Hub adapters, which then allows you to fit most modern wheels. I have fitted these.

They are 7j 15" so much bigger than yours. However they do catch with the 195/50/15's tyres on where they didn't with the 195/45/15's so you really need to use the link below to compare tyre sizes.

Use this website and if the width is the same as or greater than the 195/50/15 tyres on 7j rims then they will catch. However because they are 6.5j they should be easier to fit.

Use the tyre compareorama to see how big or small the wheels/tyres combo will be.

  8. Good story DougBGT6, this happens alot. You go to fix the immediate problem when really its just a symptom of other things going wrong. That coupled with the crap bearing metal we get these days is the reason I'm no longer using the triumph unit.

Don let us know how you get on and what you decide to do.

    Chris.

  9. GT6M tried these and wasn't a fan as the beam is more straight or something?? I think he said that high beam was too bright and dip was not as good as H4's. He will input soon I'm sure.

  10. OMG is that an optical illusion on pic 5 on that link Nang!!!!!!! Wholly Bonnet Modifications Batman!!!!

I'm sure you have all guessed it by now but the Zetec SE is one of the best to use. I spent a long time looking at different engines down the breakers. It even fitted under the original spitfire mk2 bonnet and it might be possible to fit it without any tub mods.

, what about converting one of the new 3 cyl 1 litre ford engines, not much weight in one of those I'd wager.

It's cast iron block/head and exhaust manifold is part of the head. it's also turboed so even though it looks good it causes lots of problems and I don't think it will be cheap.

I've seen 97kg as the weight but I don't think this will include the turbo etc.

As already mentioned, the Zetec is a far superior modern alternative.  The Zetec SE is even better (very light weight) though a bit more involved as a special bell housing is needed to fit to the T9.

These guys do the bell housing for the Zetec SE to type 9. Engine weight 80kg. Standard 100bhp. Throttle bodies 135bhp. N/a max 220bhp. I have made mounts for this engine, everything else for the conversion is off the shelf. PM for details.
