  1. Thank you both for your replies, makes it easier to get the job done.  I've already got the gasket but when it goes I will replace it for silicone, that makes good sense.  Just a thought, would you use hylomar to seal the gasket to the rocker cover? Ben
  2. Hi All, I've got to replace my rocker cover gasket on my Vitesse, but I've never done one before does anyone have any tips?  I'm assuming  take off the rocker cover and peel the old cork gasket, but do I need sealant or anything? Thanks for the thoughts, Ben

Really appreciate the advice here, and thank you Mark for looking at the pictures.   It looks like a job I'm going to put on the back burner for now as I've got a list of smaller jobs to do that's longer than the car itself.  I am starting to think about a rebuild though to correct some of the funny choices that were made in it's last rebuild some time in the past. Those manuals are brilliant!  I've been checking out the speedo one as my trip reset doesn't work. I've been trying to put up pictures but i can't do it, sorry Mark. I think if it's as bigger job as it looks then I might give it a miss just for now and get them to fit as best I can.  Considering the chrome strip lines up door to rear wing, and the swage lines (?) all match up when the doors closed but I have a large gap at th bottom of the door does this indicate poorly fit door skin? Hard to say without piccies I know but what do you reckon? Ben

Oh Lordy that looks involved.  How much of the car needs to come apart before this is done? Ben

    Blooming doors

So looking at the hinges on the passenger door of my vitesse convertible I noticed that the forward most bolts at the top and bottom hinge were tight but the two behind it were loose.  I started to faff about to try to get the door to shut properly and I'm now stumped. The lower rear corner of the door impacts the body yet the shut line at the top is a pinky fingers gap.  The quarter light hits the window frame and sticks out but yet the door still needs to lift up to shut and for the chrome strip to line up on the door to rear wing.  This however leaves a large, but even gap along the bottom of the door to the sill, big enough to get my thumb into. How can the door be too high at the bottom but not high enough to close properly and line up at the top?  I'm wondering whether she's had a new door skin but i don't know this for sure. Any help appreciated. Ben
  8. Rubber head yours is lovely, I like the stripe too.  Good work! Ben
  9. I haddnt picked up on all the bits and bobs, but now you mention it I see what you mean.  To be fair though I had the forehead slap moment when I realised why the battery was on the wrong side, not sure I should admit it it's so obvious. Interesting that opinion is on the 5.5j because that's what I was wondering about.  Does any one have any pictures of 5.5j mini lights on a Vitesse or Herald? Ben
  10. Morning All, Stumbled across this Vitesse for sale: http://www.thegallerybrummen.nl/nl_NL/autobedrijf/collectie/4364010/details.html It's got mini lights on it and they look lovely.  Can any one identify the size, and are they genuine or reproductions? It's a lovely Vitesse too

    Clutch issues

Sorry typed master cylinder when I meant slave cylinder as it was the slave cylinder that was full of the White powder.  Still replace the master cylinder?

So tunnel came out easily and slave cylinder is off, much easier than I was expecting So the master cylinder looks pretty ropey and seems to be filled with crusty White powder.  Repair or replace?

I think I'll have a go at it with the tunnel off tomorrow.  Thank you for the response.
  14. Hi All, I've started a job I've been meaning to do for ages, but it's got a bit more complicated than I'd anticipated.  I've noticed that the copper hose is weeping at the joint with the master cylinder, I'd been putting it off a the flats on the copper threaded bolt (I'm not sure of it's correct name I'm sorry) are looking pretty gnarled.  I bought myself a spanner that looks like a ring spanner but has a gap in it and the bolt slackened off nicely at the master cylinder end.  However the copper bolt at the slave cylinder end will not budge and there's no space to get to it properly anyway. I'm thinking of taking the slave cylinder off and removing he copper hose off the car and with more space.  Does this sound possible?  If I go down this route im assuming it's transmission tunnel off to get to the bolts on the slave cylinder? I'd appreciate any thoughts on this one. Many thanks Ben
  15. Ive got a really wandery feel in my 2l mk2.  I know the steering rack is well worn and I'm about to sort that, and I know the tyres are probably a bit squashy but when I had the rear wheels off in the summer I noticed that the rotoflex doughnuts are looking a bit cracked and crazed.  What with limited technical knowledge and a new baby I'm not going to do this job myself so I'm going to get it done by a professional, however stick with the doughnuts or take the plunge and go for the canley classics cv options?  I don't know about costs yet but I'm interested by any opinions or experiences that people have.  I'm going to wait until the steering rack is done and I'm happy with tyre pressures but just planning ahead. Cheers for your thoughts, Ben
