  1. Thank you all so much for the time you're putting in here. I'll let you know the results after a bit of delving.. Answers to your questions, M. so questionee,s 1, what oil is in it - 20:50 Castrol classic 2, when was it changed, as it may have actually worn oot, and just now reverted to a 20 grade only. Changed very recently after the heads were clamped down. (100 miles or so, ago. 3, what oil did ye use to run it in, specs needed 20:50 Castrol classi 4, head re torqued - yep. 5, oil on piston tops - TBC 6 oil coming  frae spark plug side - TBC 7, the engine breather is working I take it.!!! 2. All, I've had an engine rebuilt in germany (i live here) about 1000kms ago. But i've noticed that: a) there's an external oil leak probably from the head gasket. b) there's an awful amount of white smoke from the engine, even after an hour of driving. see the below clip. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hlcQESMptj8 I have already expressed my concerns about an external oil line to the top of the engine, but was told that the warranty would be voided unless i keep that line. SO.. what do you think!? This has had a full bottom end rebuild, with valve seats for unleaded fuel. I've done 1000kms. The vid was taken around an hour after starting from cold, so the oil's warm. And even after 2 hours drive, i still see smoke at ltraffic lights. I think it's using about 1/2 litre of oil per tank, but i can't prove that yet.. what do you think?
  3. Thanks everybody. My problem is that i've fairly limited engine knowledge - the engine was rebuilt in germany where i live and i suspect the mod was initially done in the US, and my german mechanics have simply replaced old for new.. So i guess I have two questions: 1. How can i tell if the engine is struggling for lubrication? 2. If I detect a problem, how would i be best to undo this mod? Can I just blank off the two ports? Thanks in advance..
  4. I was trawling around piston heads the other day and got some advice on a new engine rebuild i've had done. Have any of you heard of the issue described below? I tried searching for old topics but couldn't find anything.. "have a good read around before running your rebuilt engine with the supplementary rocker oil supply [coming from the oil pressure take off in the form of a braided hose], general consensus is that they starve the bottom end leading to premature wear, If your rocker gear is in good condition it will be fine with regular oil changes." I can see how the rockers might 'suck up' a bit of oil, but will this really starve the bottom end?? Any advice welcome, cheers Chris my engine:
  5. Hello all, Well, after 18 months I've finally managed to get the old girl up, running, and road legal (in germany = quite a challenge)! However, I seem to be losing charge quite quickly and i definitely have some electrics to fiddle with. My problem is that my dash switches are all quite worn and so i can't figure out which positions they should be in to be 'off' and hopefully not run my battery down every evening! Anybody care to bust out a layman's diagram? Cheers Chris (ps It's a GT6+/mk2)
  6. Hello all, My daily commuter is a bmw 3 series, which comes with a rather chunky steering wheel. On my GT6 I currently have a wooden motolita which is really rather skinny in comparison. Switching between the two is quite strange, particularly when the GT6 needs a little more 'leverage' than the bm. So i wondered if someone can point me in the direction of a brand(s) of wheel manufacturer who can offer a slightly thicker wooden wheel? Thanks in advance Chris
  7. So, when I switch from the US self contained Lamps to the EU lamps, will i need a kit to convert the wiring?
  8. Thank you all - really useful. I'll check the spread patterns tomorrow.
  9. I bought my gt6 from a guy who had imported it from California to Germany. He never drove it here. So I have the joyous adventure of registering an imported car as a historic vehicle in Deutschland.. fun. However, the reason for this background is because Gerhard, the Bavarian, told me that I would need to change the headlamps in order to comply with local legislation... He'd bought the headlamps, but hadn't got round to changing them. Having a look at the current ones vs. the spare ones, i cant really see what the difference will be between the ones legal in the US, and the ones legal in Germany. Anybody know of any likely differences? I'm a little loathed to take the current ones off if there's no need to.. Cheers Chris
