Ah, misunderstood that Pete. I thought you meant one of the visible bolts that connect engine and box together. Defo gear oil me thinks.

Cheers for all the replies. You've got me thinking now Pete re the bolt you mentioned. It looks like the box is a re conditioned one as it's very clean and the mounts have been changed, so I'm wondering if the previous owners have just missed the bolt issue? I'll have a butchers at that option first. Ta.

I'd go with damp at the mo Nick. Is the scroll an easy/worth while fix or just better left alone? Cheers.

Looks damp around the bottom of the bell housing (from 3 to 9 o'clock position on engine side of where engine/bell housing meet) and some transfer down the underside of the box. Not a lot but enough to spot slightly. Sure it's gear oil so is there an internal seal that's prone to failure or any other suggestions? Ta.

Cheers for the replies so far. "The lowest seat position" was mentioned earlier in this thread and I'm now wondering if I have mine at the lowest. I thought they were but maybe not? I can't see anything around the seat that would lower it anymore so can anyone help me out with a pic? Ta.

Looks well that Herald. Where did the seats come from and how did you go about fitting them? Cheers.

Don't know if they have the right needle Pete. I'll look if I decide to go down the route of replacing the current carb. Don't think it's worth fitting the bottom jet into newer body. Might as well just change the complete carb me thinks. Many thanks. John.

Many thanks Pete. Thinking it might be easier just to stick one of my original spares on if they're not to difficult to recon. I'll have a look at your suggestion re adjusting the doofer! Ta.

Thanks for that Rob. So, do you think the thermo CV is doing anything on mine? Don't fancy the potential tuning disaster! Could be EV for choke. Is it worth sticking one of the originals on? As stated, it seems to run OK so I might leave well alone unless some problem manifests. Ta.

Apologies for all the questions but clearly, I'm new to the Herald. I'm pretty sure this is not an original carb so, if it's not, what's it from and what's the white plastic doofer on the side? http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k138/pipeboy1/IMAG1226_zps004i3lqn.jpg http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k138/pipeboy1/IMAG1231_zpspdfiktg8.jpg The car still runs from a choke cable so don't think it's any auto choke device. I thought the car was running a little rich but can't see how to adjust the mixture on this as there's what looks like (and I can only see it by photographing it) a castelled type nut on the bottom (last pic). Don't really want to take the carb off to get a better look. I've got three other carbs that came with the car and they all appear original, (i.e with the jet adjusting nut on the bottom and no white plastic doofer), so are they much of a faff to strip, clean and set up because if not, I might stick one of those on. Car seems to tick over fine and the plugs are nice and sandy coloured but others commented on it running rich and it did seem a little towards that end. Cheers.

Forgive the ignorance Billus, but what's "flay" or is it a typo? Cheers.

Fantastic post Einar. Some great work on there and the seat conversion looks a doddle. Don - many thanks for your offer but I might as well stick with Einar's "how to" for now. Don't you just love these Forums? Absolute God send!

Thanks all for the replies. Very informative. Going on what Billus states it looks like the early MX5's are the one's for me with mine being a convertible. On that note, any chance of a post on "How to" Billus? Casper - as far as I'm aware they're on the lowest setting. It's not the steering wheel position that's an issue, it's the fact I'm not sat low enough. Ta.

Many thanks for the replies. Problem is I'm 6' 3" and having to stoop when seated to see traffic lights so could do with some seats that sit lower than the originals.
