Why on Earth would BMW want to make range of Teiumph car.  That was a mistake that BMC/BL made, leafing yo the "badge engineering" trope.    BMW have cars from sports to shopping to SUVs, all within their own range and designed to look like family, something BL never did.

They acquired the Triumph name as a relic, a fossil, among the wreckage of BL, and will be perfectly happy to leave it there.

Hmm! Mine have only got 5 leaves. I had read somewhere that early mk4 had a shorter axle than later and 1500 models. Oh well, think I might try repair kit for old spring over the winter months. Fingers crossed that will work. Thanks everyone. Vic.

    Shorter drive shafts(axle) same spring.

Having changed dozens of rear drive shafts on saloons and Stags I know that, on the lift in my garage, it's a simple operation. But at midnight, in the dark, in a fuel station forecourt, tired and cold - and angry because it was a new, reconditioned shaft that failed - it's not so simple.

We did 2 this year …. Long story and I say we loosely 🤣

Nuala's and my DNF in 2021 was due to a failed rear wheel bearing in a new hub on the Stag. Even if we'd carried a spare rear hub, I don't think I'd have wished to change it at midnight at Gledrid. There are limits!

You just carry a complete shaft with a saloon or stag. Not handed so simple, not so easy on a small chassis.

  5. Just been thinking what I’ve learnt over the years driving old cars on long trips/Rbrr’s.

I always carry at least one spare wiper since my mk3 cortina wiper flew off in pouring rain on m1 heading to Bradford.
This year my pal Nick lost a wiper after a bird strike at John o groats fortunately he had a spare.
When Gwaredd and I did our first rbrr my distributor kept moving as the bolt securing it was shot. Shedtune rescued us and from then on I’ve always carried an assortment of various bolts ,nuts and washers.
This year I had to dig into the box a couple of times for others after they had issues.
Fuses I always carry a vast array of fuses…. Lesson learnt after a friend kept popping fuses on a previous rbrr.
Instant gasket, again first rbrr thermostat housing kept leaking. Ellis helped me out that time and this time we used it to adapt a leaky silicone rocker gasket that appeared to have stretched. Gwaredd cut a bit out and sealed it up with sealer.
I carry a spare distributor, I had a power spark unit fail at lands end suddenly on the rbrr in 2016 after a faultless run that far. It just wouldn’t restart , fortunately I’d packed my old one and we stuck that on and were away again.
I have a 123 now but as has been found they are not faultless so still carry a spare.
I always carry a spare cap and rotor arm for rbrr…. Kindly loaned by a friend this year as ran out of time to order one.

I’m sure there’s more, anyone else?

We had, that is NIgel Gair's team, Dave Langrick's team and Tim/Jason in the TR6 had a bad experience with a fool in a VW Golf derivative on the M6 before Tebay.

He would overtake a car, slot in front and then gradually slow down to 50mph, then as one attempted to overtake, he would speed up. He would also start to flash his lights at the car in front. He did this for about 10 miles, one could not see inside the car as all the windows were blacked out.

Dave's partner, Ilka reported him to the Police and we await with interest to see what happens?

Got to say it was a bit unerving and not very pleasant.

Thankfully, near to Tebay he was in front of Nigel's car and Charles Nunn who was driving the Saloon left it till the last minute before diving off onto the end of the slip road. Good driving and common sense from Charles.

I was fearful of an incident in Tebay car park.

    Well done Charles!

Fantastic RBRR without a doubt. This is an event where you will hear noises from your car that you would never have heard before and probably wont hear again once you get home. (bearings running for 48 hours non stop can really play havoc on your mind, especially when you're tired! 🙂)

Many thanks to the organisers, marshalls, co-entrants and even the people (including photographers) who stepped out to support us on our travels.

Already looking to the 2025 event, especially now I have 'unfinished business' from this one.

See you at the start. 🙂

I was honestly gutted you guys didn’t make it Steve. So near and yet to far to push it….

    Have you investigated yet?

  8. Weirdly this was amongst my favourite round Britain.
My car behaved almost faultlessly all weekend and only leaked when tracking through standing water. It was coming through the transmission tunnel …. Wet feet was the order of Friday night/Saturday am.
Lost front lights when a fuse holder failed but quickly sorted. Got a bit left behind at bude but only due to helping another entrant and that’s all part of it. It’s also part of why I enjoyed it so much, we chatted and laughed whilst doing it…..

What a club and what a great group of people!!

I would not worry, still looks good.

I also put both stickers on the door on my Spitfire as I feel the rear sticker looks messy/cramped on the Spit rear wing.

I also stick mine to magnetic sheets from eBay as it’s easy to reposition and I find it doesn’t mark the paint.  😀

Also good souvenirs that you can take off and keep at the end off the event. 🙂

I’ve always put the stickers on the rear wing with no issues.
I actually think they look good there…. Maybe it’s the magnetic backing causing the issues.

  10. I remember when I swapped the engine out on my old 2000 at my work. I put the radiator cap somewhere safe during the process and then couldn’t find it. So I went home pinched the spitfire cap and drove the now 2.5 home.

Days later I found it….. next to the gearstick 🙄🤷🏼‍♂️

  11. Running round in circles currently, I’ve never been happy with the bonnet fit. So easy, I’ll just redo everything 🥴

Progress has been made, but at the cost of a few steps back as I wrecked the paintwork in the process.
Well rather than just touch it in I decided to go all in…. Even fitted the new bootlid …. Now I’m in for a respray…. It’s entered for the rbrr so best get a shift on 🤣

I might have one, but I think it has a small hole in the top where somebody fitted an led for an after market alarm system. I'll see if I can find it (currently packing the garage ready to move... nothing is where it should be!)

If you could that would be great thank you. I actually only need the lower piece.
Mine has broken so the screws pull through …. Previously repaired but not worth it again as it’s in small pieces 🙄

  13. Pictures tell a thousand words.
Biggest expense is body work, bonnets are very expensive …… otherwise if you can weld and as already stated you have the space then go for it.
originality isn’t key here. Build the car you want, your choice of colour etc. It’ll never make you rich but in the right colour and condition will make you very happy.

A money pit ……yep bound to be, but done right you should still get to drive it more than fixing it.
Biggest problem with these cars is that value has always been low. As a result people cut corners and try to do everything cheap. It doesn’t need to be like that though. There’s sourcing out there of varying quality but also cost…..and cost doesn’t mean anything in regards to quality!

  14. My spitfires been pressed into daily driver duties for the last 2 weeks after my modern failed its mot.
shouldn’t have been for long but have spent a week taking the front wheels off( wanted to do it properly 😂).
Spitfires still not had tracking set up after all its recent work…. Or the horn reconnected.
Seems to be running pretty well though and has benefitted from being used I’d say. Snow was fun and I wouldn’t have used it in all the salt etc if I’d had a choice but needs must!
