  1. i will have to have the shim engineered at some point, atleast it will spin the engine up and i can finally try and start the thing. its a powerlite starter sold by rimmers
  2. its a new loom from rimmers i put the yellow connector on as the one supplied would not fit the alternator. But it was 2 wires into one connector
  3. i removed the cover so i could see better the alternator was a replacement from paddocks but forgot to take notice how it was wired up when i took the car apart all those years ago i have more trouble identifying the pins really
  4. hello all my alternator appears to have 3 terminals with mini terminals attached but i have 4 wires to attach to it, can't really make sense of it even after look at my old wiring loom i have a thick brown wire a thick yellow a twin brown and yellow and a small brown and yellow sorry if pictures are rubbish
  5. hi guys thanks for all your help it turns out the clutch had gone in the NEW starter motor took it to my local starter/alternator reconditioned and had the engine turning next day. just need to try start the thing up now!
  6. yes the engine turns by hand its newly rebuilt. i think i may have been wiring it up wrong, but haven't had time to have a play last couple days I'm considering doing away with the bulkhead solenoid an just wiring it up down at the starter, as iv been bridging the dud original solenoid
  7. hello guys thanks for the reply i have removed the gearbox to see what was going on at first it wasn't meshing at all then somehow started to, however it still won't spin up the engine iv tried 2 different batterys i have wired it up using just the battery aswel to ensure a good earth and live an still no joy i have bench tested it and the pinion does throw out and spin iv spoken to Rimmers who i bought it off, they said they would get back to me which they haven't so far. thanks again
  8. I meant to post this photo as well
  9. Hello all I haven't posted on here in a long time. I am currently in the midst of a restoration My chassis is completed, suspension rebushed repainted. Engine rebuilt etc I'm looking to try and start the engine soon I wanted to see if u could turn it over before worrying about the fuel side Which is where I discovered the new power lite starter motor appears to not engage with the flywheel. I've spent a few hours on the Internet and on asked Facebook but not had much luck finding an answer The only thing I have found regards having the spacer thinned at a machine shop. What confuses me about this is I tried the starter with and without the spacer Sorry for writing war and peace but I'm confused!
  10. Hi all again... Been having electrical issues at the moment, fixed my overdrive now! The car developed a missfire (i think), on the way into college this morning. I pulled over to see if maybe a HT lead was loose an had turned the engine off, when to turn her back on and it did turn but not very well and eventually not at all. Just a click and nothing, so i checked all the leads again, and checked the starter solenoid and tried to get power to the starter but that didnt work. Resorted to ringing the AA who got me going with a jump pack an a new battery, he did some Volt And Amp Tests and it appeared there was to much drain on the battery if i put lights an wipers on, he said it was likely the Alternator. Does this sound right to you guys? Starting to fall out with my car now..... Aidan
  11. Hi all thanks for all the replies! all appreciated My circuit appears to be as the manual states. My overdrive troubles to be over, seems the relay had gone. However before fitting the new one i did check if my brake lights were working, which they wernt. I checked the wires to the button along the gearlever an they are not damaged After fitting the new relay all the above problems seem to have stopped, this might be because i checked the brake light connectors at the pedal as they may of come loose when i took the gearbox tunnel of. But i do suspect a bad earth at the rear. My reverse light is now also working, so happy days! Hope thats it for now Thanks again Aidan
  12. Thank you this was a great help! I put power to the the solenoid through the circuit and it clicked, So im assuming that is the relay gone and have ordered a new one. The reverse lights are working if i put power to them but not when i engage reverse, i pulled the gearbox cover of and tried what you suggested but nothing happened this might have been down to a bad earth which i sorted then forgot to do the test again, i have ordered a new switch anyway. This would all happen just coming up to my MOT!! cheers

    overdrive

Hello Hi all my overdrive has suddenly stopped working (yay!) on my 71 GT6 Mk3 The is no noise switch noise when it is engaged like you would normally here. The reverse lights have also stopped working but work if i put power to the circuit. I had a look at my overdrive relay, and found that the Yellow and Purple Wire that goes to overdrive solenoid does turn positive once the overdrive switch is engaged, does this mean i have a faulty relay, or it could be shorting out somewhere? Or one of many other problems, im not very good at wiring yet. cheers aidan
  14. as far as i remember, you have to give them a whack as there pressed in. you can use an extension bar of a quarter inch ratchet and hit it out. Re-apply the same "technique" to put them in but use a rubber hammer and something soft over the jet making sure it goes in even. I think the jet has to sit flush against that part of the Venturi. But as said before if there not bloacked or damaged may not be worth replacing. The CDSE don't seem to have a good rep but i think there probably fine once set up properly. Do you have a workshop manual for the car, its worth getting. Anyone please correct if this is wrong, but i think its what i did on my old ones before replaced.
  15. Ok thankyou guys have found some that will do the job of canely classics :) Car goes really well on the SU's, i think my strombergs were well and truly nakered!
