My apologies I meant to say I do have the 22% standard overdrive which as you say is standard equip.

I suppose when it was mostly ‘A’ and ‘B’ roads back in the day, the gearing was about right, so that’s why I was considering an overdrive with a higher ratio for the straighter faster roads we encounter these days, both here and on the Continent. The only issue I know of is that it will virtually be on a par with some of the standard gearbox ratios at 28%. However, I wanted it to have longer legs on the top gear cruising speed if anything. I’ll have a chat with ORS as you say.

    Thanks

    Kevin

I changed the overdrive on my TR3a to a 28% but did not like it. 2nd overdive was basically 3rd and 3rd overdrive was higher than 4th so you could not "change up through the gears". It basically changed a 7 speed box into a 5 speed box. It did make motorway cruising much more relaxed or, when in Europe faster i.e. cruising at 90 to 95 MPH. This was with a 3.7 diff not the usual 4.1 which was standard for the overdrive cars..

  5. Hello,

would anybody be interested in a Triumph TR7 with a V8 conversion?

It is a 1982 car and was coverted using the correct subframe.

The date of the "last V5C issued" is 6th November 2012, which I presume is when Paul Darbyshire bought it. I know Paul did a couple of runs with this car, one being the Scottish Caladonian and, if memory serves me right, it was with Barry McGrath. It was put into storage around the time, or shortly after, Paul purchased his 3rd TR7.

I should be able to get better photos of it sometime next week but in the meantime and to give you an impression I have attached a few photos taken in the storage unit. The car could not be rolled out as it was blocked in by another car.

The hood is missing on these photos, it is in good condition but not stored presently with the car.

I have not mentioned a price as neither Adam nor I have any idea what this car could be worth.

If you are interested, have further questions or can suggest what the car might be worth please send me a PM as I might miss any replies to this post.

    Thanks

  6. Lucas 25521, M418G Starter Motor for sale, fits Triumph TR3a

I was sold this as a Triumph TR3a starter motor which I believe is correct. It would mean that it also fits the Triumph TR4 and TR4a

It has 10 teeth and was refurbished a few years ago and has been on the shelf since.

Due to the weight I would prefer pick up from North Lincolnshire but can post at cost, should be about £8.00

First to offer £60.00 or more can have it

     some with suction cup attachment.

that is the problem John. Obviousley you have never drive a sidesreen car otherwise you would know the windscreen vibrates so much you cannot see anything out of a "stuck on" rear view mirror. A sat nav vibrates off within the first 2 miles.Ask me how I know?

Ours was very minor.  Near the end of the run our stag seemed sluggish to start. In fact it would not start at all when we ran the starter but would instead start when the key was moved back to the ignition position and the inertia of the engine rotating allowed the car to start.  After a bit if head scratching we diagnosed a failing battery which meant the volts dropped to low when the starter was running for the electronic ignition to fire. Once the starter was de-energised the volts popped back up and the ignition fired and the car started..

We also noticed this was a lot worse with lights, wipers etc on. Stressing the battery further. So from bude starting was like that scene from apollo 13. Everything drawing current was turned off, even phone chargers and then wang the starter and hope.

annoyingly i had a new battery ready to fit back in the garage

on a previous run we were saved from a broken throttle cable 20 miles from home by a modified bike brake cable  i always carry one..

    tim

I had a similar issue years ago and after changing the battery and still having the problem. I eventually found I had a bad earth. In this particular case it was the negative cable to battery terminal connector. Changed that and everything was fine with both old and new batteries.

After all that rain and the position of the Stag battery it could be that you have corrosion on one or both of the terminals.

I agree, but there's not much you can do about someone else's lights.

May I suggest a "Dipping" rear view mirror?     These can be flicked to tilt them, directing the full glare away from your eyes, but keeping a dimmed image in view for safety.   See: dipping rear view mirror - Google Search

Sorry John this is not possible with the early TRs.

How about a little more courtesy when driving behind someone?

I have noticed over the years that more and more people are becoming night blind and react by putting on brighter headlights. Something I can associate with, BUT when driving behind someone else why not just leave a bigger gap? If you are lighting up the car in front, i.e. there is not a dark spot between the end of your headlight beam and the car in front, drop back if not preparing to overtake.

  10. Good Afternoon,

I have just seen that the 18e Nacht van het Oosten (aka The Chinese Rally) will be taking place on 18th March 2023 starting near Bentelo, The Netherlands.

This rally, as well as the one organised for later in the year, used to be well attened by Club Triumph cars and I was wondering if anyone else might be up for a trip to The Netherlands?

More information can be found at https://www.triumph.nl/nl/content/18e-nacht-van-het-oosten

    Cheers

  12. Paul Darbyshire (aka PD, Diesel Dave, Burner Boy)

It is with great sorrow that I have to inform you that my close friend and co-driver Paul passed away this morning after a short illness.

Many of you will remember him as being the life and sole of any party, rallye, 10CR or RBRR. He was my co-pilot in the 2003 10CR and again in 2005 where he was nominated “accommodation officer” and arranged the hardest camping site (needed a Hilti to get the tent pegs in) for the stopover in Ventimiglia.

After our second jaunt he decided he needed a Triumph and bought a very well sorted Spitfire. That car was used for a 10CR, a RBRR as well as a couple of European road trips. The Spitfire became a Stag and a TR7 and TR8 were added to the collection.

    A true petrol-head.

Arrangements for the funeral have not yet been made however, I will post here once these are known.

Please let your thoughts be with Helen and Adam at this time.

  13. Roger,

I didn't bother with tuning the SUs more than the normal set up. I am using SM needles which are the standard needles and the mixture is fine all through the rev range. Perhaps a little rich on tick over but I live with that as I have not been able to find an alternative needle that is the same as the SM but a little weaker in the first couple of steps. This does mean that after 15 to 20 minute on tick over the engine chokes itself to death but again how often do you leave it for that amount of time on tick over?

The dizzy might need tuning but I would not send it away to be done. You will perhaps need a little more advance in general and that can be done on the veneer knob.

  14. Hi Roger,

I have the TT1004N Fast Road cam (37/63 73/37, 280 deg. duration) installed and I can get the tickover down to about 700 RPM but it is lumpy. I usually have it set between 750 and 800 RPM. That is with the standard flywheel. I used to have a lightened flywheel which made it worse

On the other hand how long is it on tick over compared to running great between 2500 and 5500 RPM 🙂

  15. done this twice once in a TR6 from Glasgow the second time in a TR3 from John o'Groats.

It was great fun but not so easy especially when the ferry gets cancelled and you have to drive instead of getting a nights sleep. Nevertheless I would  recommend it to anyone who wants to top the RBRR or the 10CR

  16. Quoted from Rubce
    Hi

Another question relating to the 2018 on-line entry

    A) when registering on-line on the 1st December will I have to pay the full £375 entry fee (for our crew of 3) upfront via a credit or debit card? Or is it a deposit and then the remainder paid nearer the date?

    Regards

    Bruce

My experience with such events is that the FULL entry fee is required with the entry form. No money, no entry. Simples 🙂

  17. Quoted from kin74

As an IT guy, this scares me.
I know times are tight, but starting the website a couple of days before would allow you to fix the first bugs. Anyway, nobody will be harmed if the entries will be delayed one day or two due to some unexpected problem, so...

as an IT guy it would scare me too if this was corporate bank or some other large enterprise. But this is Club Triumph run by volunteers for club members therefore there should be much forgiveness in the air and no-one should be complaining if it all crashes. In the past everyone who wanted a place has got one so why all this constructed panic?

If it goes wrong it goes wrong as long as nobody is killed when the site crashes then everything is fine.

    Andy
