  1. Well that's really cheered me up - I've spent hours looking at my oil pressure guage dropping to (nearly) 0 (on a 0-100 psi guage), cr***ing myself, and being re-assured by my great spanner man that "it's ok, you only need 8-10 psi at tickover" ... now it seems he was right. Should have trusted him..... I think!
  2. I think that looks very smart. Not sure I've seen one that colour before. Minilites go well with it too. My parents had a green L reg 2.5pi estate (NPA 633L) - it was not a great success. Injection system was a nightmare, and as a heavily loaded estate it was horribly bouncy at the back. Steve S
  3. Sorry, bloody auto text - s/be "soft top", not softwood!
  4. Thx all; agree with you Iain, though can actually hear it clicking too (softwood, roof always down). Rob, agree too, Oil check to be made over the w/e, but I think oil state / level is the root of the problem. Will advise when poss. Cheers. Steve s
  5. I'm having much the same problem on my 2.0 Spitfire. I can hear the solenoid clicking when engaged (gear stick switch), and it will eventually drift in (slipping clutch sounds just right), but after a few seconds and quite reluctantly. Then under power, and usually when hot, it will slur out- but onlysometimes. Back off the power, and it'll go back in, and stay in for miles. Switching out will be immediate. I think happens in 3 as well as 4, but will check tomorrow. I reckon low oil. If it is, am I running the risk of damaging it? Thx all. Steve.
  6. Hi all, here's my stupid question for today - I remember from days of old that you had to undo battery cell caps if you were charging them ("or they will explode") ... is this still necessary, and was it ever so? Cheers; Steve.
  7. Thank you for this thread - it's cheered me up no end. I've not had a speedo for 9 months (don't ask!), but having checked out my revs against that website, I reckon my Mk 2 Vitesse has been scampering along rather better than I thought- unless it's also got Joner's disease! Mind you it was a 'bit of a moment' driving at a mobile speed camera in a 30 the other day - with no- one in front to set the speed of course! Fingers crossed.
  8. Thank you everyone - I will do a bit of digging about as soon as I have a bit of time, and report back.
  9. Aha - I think Tony has it - the speedo is currently not where it should be ( don't ask!), and all the bits behind are just flapping around in the breeze! Fuses are good. So I think that explains the fuel & temp gauges. Thx both for input. BUT, does this explain no wipers, fan or (now) indicators or brake lights. The only electrics that seem to be working now are lights (all ok), and overdrive! If they  are dodgy earth - where? And why suddenly all going wrong? Perhaps first winter damp setting in? Thx. Steve
  10. Hmm, some interesting comments. I realise that I habitually press the clutch when starting - never give it a second thought - and certainly never realised it puts things under pressure. I think I started doing it when I learnt to drive tractors & farm machinery at the age of 10 - you don't want to start a tractor in gear, or worse with the PTO engaged - aargh!

  12. Hi all; Mk 2 Vitesse CV; in the last few days I have intermittently lost both fuel guage and temp guage, plus, at separate times, wipers and heater fan. Maybe brake lights too! Overdrive works fine, and (thankfully as I'm enjoying driving to & fro work in this warm weather!), headlights do as well. I reckon someone's going to say I've got dodgy earthing somewhere? Thanks all. Steve.
  13. Thx all, that's pretty much what I thought. Bxbodger, I think you are quite right...but on the other hand, what a donkey I'd be if I had missed a vital warning sign! I have an old grey fergy tractor that has horribly low oil pressure when hot, so not too concerned! BTW bxbodger, are you / were you a Citroen BX man, or have I got completely the wrong end of the stick?! Have a good evening all.
  14. Hi all; what would you say is 'good' oil pressure? My 2l vitesse gives say 70 psi when cold (at 2000 rpm), and around 40 when warm at say 3000rpm. BUT my minor concern is that it drops to around 12-15 psi when warm and at idle (say stuck in traffic). Do I need to worry? No signs of any overheating, or any unhappiness from the engine. Am in being unduly concerned?
  15. Sorry for late reply - have been away for a few days. Big thanks for answers - very helpful. Cheers.
