  1. Thanks for the advice, will be rigging up a collector and blocking up the valve and reporting back. It may take a while.
  2. Mk3 engine is consuming oil - slowly, but too quickly to confidently set off on RBRR. It's not the valve guides as they have been recently replaced and there is no signs of oil leaking elsewhere. I'm suspecting the PCV valve, or should that be PC Valve? The valve trap seems to have a large amount of oil in it. See pic. Is this normal? I would have thought this should run back into the rocker cover if it is oil and not oil fumes but that would rely on a downhill path of which there isn't. Any comments?
  3. The nipple was on the bottom when we got the car and the clutch was ok but decided it should be corrected. Have had another look at the innards of the master and reassembled, no changes and now it works! Problem solved but not satisfactory. Apparently nipple rash isn't when the spanner slips of the bleed nipple and you scuff you knuckles!
  4. Spitfire MK2 clutch is not disengaging. It has been bled properly and both the master and slave have new seals. When the clutch pedal is pressed, it seems to take 2 presses to get the slave cylinder piston to reach the circlip. Also, the clutch operating lever with the push rod mounted on it has about an inch of slack (in/out).   Any ideas where our problem is? p.s. we bled the system because the the bleed nipple was mounted below the pipe. Problems started after this
  5. The old seal was a leather one in metal casing, no rubber at all. New seal now fitted. Hopefully the oil bill will go down now!
  6. Feeling a bit stupid now, on closer inspection there is another seal already in place but it has a metal casing leading me to think it was part of the diff. It's such in place!
  7. I am confused. The bottom of the U of the seal sits on the flange. Is it supposed to be mounted on the diff first and then the flange slid on after? If so what does it 'sit' on?
  8. Hi Nick, its been a while but can report the following: Have been able to jiggle the pin around. No evidence of oil coming out through this route. Have taken the front flange off and the seal is badly damaged. It has only done a few hundred miles but looks badly affected by heat. I've attached a photo showing seal and a new one. There is a lip around the top (as seen in photo) of the seal. It is also about 1mm shorter. It was torqued up to 85lb ft as per the Haynes manual. The seal surface on the flange looks fine. Any ideas what has gone wrong?
  9. Thanks Nick, Its a rubber seal (from Rimmers). Diff is fairly quiet and no vibration. If its not the seal or the breather is a new diff required? Rob.
  10. Mk2 Spitfire Have replaced the oil seal in the front of the diff (actually there wasn't one there when bought the car) however after a few hundred miles or so it has all leaked out. Clearly coming from the front of the diff as there is a nice line of oil on the underside of the car. Its taking about  1/4 litre each time it gets filled. Is this a known problem? Any suggestions?

    Noisy carb

SU carbs on Spitfire mk3 engine. Have tuned the carbs with the ear and hose method. All running nicely however when adjusting the idle speed with hose in ear as well as the hiss of air there is a mechanical chatter as well. Any clues as to what is going on greatly appreciated.
