thanks Bobbyspit but i've got an original workshop manual just the timing of the engine section is a bit vague........think timing lights were not widely used then hahaha

right, now i'm getting somewhere..... 10 to 12 before....... vacuum pipe off and plugged...... Now, what do i set my adv/retard on the dizzy at when i start to time it? Cheers for all the help guys Darren

so......i've read in the book it should be about 12 degrees before tdc........so is this at tickover with vacuum disconnected? Then where should the advance and retard be set on the dizzy? Well confused

Hi all, Can anyone please tell me how to time my engine with a strobe light What timing mark to set to on the pulley? Which mark on the advance and retard on the dizzy? Vacuum connected/disconnected? Hope someone can help Thanks in advance Darren

Hi all, Has anyone done any modifications to their wiper motor? Mine went kapput...(managed to get it going from parts off a spare morris minor one i had) But has anyone managed to fit anything else in to do the job? Thanks Darren

i got a 2nd hand box in today and all is well again, back on the road for £70........will get my old box rebuilt when i get time.

Hi all, I've got a rumble coming from my gearbox which i thought was a thrust bearing noise. I have been told it's probably the input shaft bearing. Today i have drained the oil and low and behold there are a few needle bearings in the oil. How long in all your opinions have i got before it becomes terminal? I'm supposed to be going to pickering show this week (i live in county durham) will i get there and back? Thanks Darren

I've just took the thermostat out of mine to see if it would help the car run cooler. So does everyone rekon i should get a new one in? Thanks Darren

I'm going to check the gaps as you've said nick....don't want any more harm done. I've no idea what caused it but looks like the ring has failed and cracked. I'm lucky as when i heard it go i stopped the engine and coasted home, was only 200 yrds away. Another question, do i "wellseal" the head gasket or just put on dry?.....proper copper one Darren

Been and picked up my nice and new shiny pistons tonight.....now to start the rebuild. Will i need to set the gap in the new rings or will they be just to put in and away i go?

It says in the manual there should be some lock tab washers on the con rod bolts..........mine hasn't.............

Richard b, breather next to the fuel pump??? it has a blanked off plate next to the fuel pump. cliftyhanger, i was thinking of a basic rebuild, pistons rings, bearings, oil pump. I havent got that much to spend as i've just been made redundant

Well I tried like hell to get the sump out without removing the engine but as I'm not David blane I gave up, bit the bullet and now I have an engine laid on my garage floor!!!! Where's the best/ cheapest place to buy a rebuild kit, whilst it's out I may as well do a proper job on it.

Thanks for the advice, just sounded a bit scary when i was reading the manual ( take to a triumph specialist etc) Nick, it's a standard set up, no pinking or anything, just pulled up at a junction and heard a god awful tapping sound. there's been no damage to the bore at all, the piston has a big hole down the edge of it though. I'll post a pic later. Cheers Darren

Hi all, i took the gt out today after fitting new rack mounts. All good with the steering but the engine started to make a hell of a racket. Took the head off after checking the plugs and seeing one was badly damaged and one of the pistons has blown. Can i remove the pistons out without taking the engine out the car? and what is required to take the piston off the con rod? Many thanks in advance Darren
