  1. Hello, I'm thinking of buying a compression tester but wouldn't use it very often, are the cheapy ones any good for a skinflint infrequent user? Something like this... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PETROL-ENGINE-AUTOMOTIVE-COMPRESSION-TESTER-TOOL-KIT-/400303386303?pt=UK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment&hash=item5d33f0eebf
  2. Many thanks - that should makes things a bit easier.
  3. I need a gearbox to go with a Spitfire Mk3 FD engine but having a bit of trouble tracking one down at a suitable price (cheap). Will a 3 rail box from a Mk4 fit as is? Cheers Simon
  4. Thanks for the help and advice. I'll be adding electronic ignition later so I've ditched the pink and white resistive wire and snipped it back near the coil in case I want to use it at a later date. I see in the wiring diagram that the pink and white wire at the ignition switch provides the feed for the radio. The pink and white ballast wire seems to join a bunch of white wires a little way back, so if I connect my new wire between the coil and the ignition switch terminal where the white is connected, I should be good to go I guess?
  5. Thanks Richard. Is there any merit in keeping the ballast wire and changing the coil? Or would I need to make other changes as well?
  6. I'm currently restoring a Hurricane and have got to the stage of putting a loom in. I've got 4 different looms to choose from but have opted for one from a Spitfire 1500, based on condition and one or two other factors. The car is largely based on a MkIII Spitfire with 1300 FD engine, and alternator. I'd already bought a coil for a MkIII and was planning to use that, but I'm a tad confused over the whole issue of ballast resistor and coil. The wiring diagram in the Haynes manual for the relevant 1500 shows a ballast wire running from the coil to the ignition switch. So, can I use a coil from a MkIII, or do I need a different one, if so, what? Or should I replace the ballast wire with ordinary wire? Also, are there any different types of starter solenoids? I have a new 4ST in my spares which I was going to use, is this going to be the right one for the job? Thanks
  7. Thanks Jaybee and Harry, this is a bit of a non standard job as it's for a Hurricane. For the switch end, I buzzed out the connectors on the switch and worked out what was going on inside and confirmed with Harry's diagram. I managed to find a loom from a Spitfire 1500 which I'll use and that has the correct connector at the motor end. I know some of the wiring diagrams have errors in them so it's reassuring to confirm physical circuits against the schematics. Thanks again for your help.
  8. I'm upgrading my wiper motor from a single speed to a two speed and want to use the rotary type switch below. Anyone know how I should connect things up please? The switch, I'm told is two speed, and does have 3 positions.

I need to reassemble my Hurricane doors after a paint job. It looks a bit of fiddly job so what's the best way to do it? And what should I put in first, winder mechanism or lock/latch mechanism? I'll be using mk3 Spitfire parts because I prefer the older lock/latch mechanism (seems a bit more robust than mk4/1500) but also have spare 1500 doors. Thanks

I have got a mk3 hood frame and was really in two minds about using it or not, but there's a roll bar fitted which the mk3 hood wouldn't pass over, and I do want to keep that in the car really for the seatbelt mountings etc.
  14. Thanks for the replies - I'd better try to find a used hood then to get the other bits and pieces. I was hoping it would be the easiest to fit option so thats good news anyway. Many thanks Simon
  15. Hi, has anyone fitted a new hood for a Spitfire mk 1 or 2? I'm just wondering if it's an easy job. I have a bare frame only, so I guess it needs some kind of bar at the front to attach to the top of the windscreen? Any help appreciated. Thanks Simon
