I really didn't want to have to say this, but what is it with you guys? Do you really believe that the chaps who did the first RBRR in 1966 had everything laid on tap? What is worrying you? Might you miss the air-con, or that DAB radio, the heated seats or the SatNav? What's the problem with taking on the challenge of 2,000 miles in 48 hours and using the road book to work it out as you go? In 1990 when I did my first, we drove in a tired 2.5PI from Settle in Yorkshire to Broadfields Garage in North London, set off at 7pm on Friday evening, collected the third co-driver somewhere near Leeds and returned to Broadfields, tired but successful on Sunday before returning to Settle. No SatNav, no mobile phone, no breakdown service. I stilll have the engraved glass tankard, but I don't have the car....

    Snap. My first too!

Only difference is i still have the car, even if its in bits and not ready for this one 😞

At the time, its how it was. Didnt really give it a great deal of thought. If you broke down, you had to find a way. And only circa 35 cars on the event, much less chance of help.

Added to which, it was my only car, so bugger all prep was done. It was just another trip.

A selection of recent RBRR failure causes:

Stag                                Engine  / Camshaft Timing Issues- DNF.

Stag                                Propshaft UJ failure leading to G/Box damage- DNF.

Dolly Sprint                  Timing Chain Tensioner Failure -  changed at 04.00hrs on day of start.

    TR4                                 Wipers Failed: DNF.

Herald/Moss Roadster       Cooling fan failure followed by head  gasket-DNF

Vitesse/Herald/Spitfire       Rear Hub Bearing failure. DNF.

    Herald                             Differential failure.

GT6                                Valve Gear oil Starvation causing  clearance issues DNF

Stag                                Master Light Switch :  Repaired by Torchlight.

TR3                                 Broken Exhaust- Beware speed Humps!

2.5 Saloon                     Front  Drag Strut detached from body, bad corrosion!! Welded up and Finished.!

    Herald                             Car Heater Failure- uncomfortable!

Spitfire                           Broken Gearchange linkage - Type 9                                         Ford Gearbox

Spitfire                           Gearbox failure - Ford Type 9   NOT the same car!

2.5PI                               Rear Hub Bearing - Swapped at                                                Roadside.

    Plus filling up with diesel.

I know of at least 2 viscous fan coupling failures. One retired, the other allowed the fan to bore a hole through the rad. That retired too.

If you have one, give it a little wooble to make sure its good with no play.

I had a cunning plan!  Any breakdown 'north' of Wales, could get recovered to home in Portishead and pick up spare car!  I thought this to be a brilliant idea until my co-driver pointed out that someone might notice that we started in a blue TR7 and finished in a red Stag.  What do you think? Workable?

You wont be the first, nor, i suspect, the last to do that!

Well after Morecombe and Wise's earlier double act where they mentioned "wheel bearings", I'm now trying to work out if they have a crystal ball or ... As on my way home going slowly in traffic I heard that annoying cyclical squeak squeak that got faster as the car did, pulled in to a service station and the off side front wheel was a lot warmer than the near side 😒.. ordered a set of bearings while it cooled off followed by much slower drive home !!

Make sure they are timken. And make sure thats actually whats in the box.

Just adding to the squealing crowd, my brakes have had a hackle-raising screech at low speed since switching to 1144 pads. Haven't tried anything to alleviate it though, too many other annoying rattles and clonks to deal with first!

If the pads squal with a compound that doesnt normally do so (mintex 1444 for example) its normally an indication the leading edge of the pad is making contact before the rest. Ideally the trailing end will make contact first.

  6. In between coats of paint drying on a non triumph job, i thought id prep some more dolomite parts.

What i found is that the aqua blaster is great for cleaning up old rubber parts. The subframe mounts have come up like new. Still soft and flexible. I guess the exposed parts being covered in underseal from new helped prolong their life.

Then i did one of the headlamp rings too. Cany de-rust this with acid as it has the brass inserts for the adjusters.

I wasn't questioning the historic integrity of "the 8 points rule" itself, I remember it coming out. It was the proviso about the bodyshell, if not the original, having to be NEW, that was a more recent amendment.

But the rule has never been ammended. The only thing that has happened is the DVLA gave clarity on what constitues "destruction of the identity".

That said, the rule could not allow a shell swap under any resonable interpratation. Now, or in the past.

  8. Not much progress to report. Too much other stuff/work/life at the moment.

But, bought an aqua blaster. Super useful. Amongst other things, put the cylinder head and intake manifold through it.

And tackled the corrosion on the bottom of the wing/sill.

The wing itself was pretty good, but the sill behind it was holed. Fortunately didnt extend far at all. So patched and wing refitted.
