  1. Heres an odd one.

Under heavy braking oil pressure drops, basically to zero if its from a high enough speed.

Plenty of oil, including overfilling it.

Checked the dipstick against my other Stag. All ok too.

Is this a known issue, ie cracked pick up pipe etc?

Any ideas? Is there baffling in the sump on these?

I shared the marshalling at Okehampton and discussed tiredness with lots if the teams.

May i make a suggestion to include another check point in the tiring stretches. In between WZL and Okehampton its a rather tedious M5-A30 journey in the middle of the night, a brief stop at Exeter services might help. There might be other places as well.

    Cheers
    Jon

Another check point is more stuff for Tim and friends to organise. And more marshalls. In the middle of the night.

Im more than capable of deciding to stop at a sevices, or even a lay by which we did 3 times on the run down to Lands end.

At the risk of sounding like an old git, the way it used to be with NO stops between Gordano and Lands end, often allowed an early arrival at Lands end and if so, a good couple of hours of sleep in a stationary car. I cant speak for others but i found this really useful. Of course dense fog on the M5 puts paid to that........................ Cant remember the year, but that was no fun!

I was planning on coming off at Junction 51 for Leeming, and cutting through the B roads, but it seems like the A1 may still be closed at that section too. Maybe a change of plans for us!

So, off at 50, A61 to Skipton on Swale, then A167 up to Darlington, short bit of A67 then pick up the A68 as planned.

Anyone have a view on this????

    Roger,

I am doing one again for anyone with a Garmin Nuvi SatNav as mentioned in my earlier post:-

"These days I use the SatNav as my primary navigation system, but for a run like the RBRR this is not simply a matter of entering the post codes of the various halts.

After getting the road book I boot up my computer with Google Maps & the Garmin Base Camp program. Every road & turn is traced from the road book using the satellite aerial photos to check any details not shown on the maps (eg the specific location of a stop) and the detailed route is created in the Base Camp map.

Maps of each sector are printed from the computer and then the route is uploaded onto the SatNav & we are ready to go.

All this takes a some hours work, but makes life a lot easier on the run. Since the large scale computer maps have been studied in detail I form a good mental picture of where we are going reducing the risk of getting lost

If anyone would like a copy route in Garmin format, please contact me via PM (please include your entry no)"

    Cheers

    Howard

Howard, thanks for you kind offer. You have PM

  5. CW 1 inch lowering springs all round and Konis. Rimmers still have stock of Konis (or they did).

Just a fantastic set-up. Did the 1CR on this. Very composed, but not hard or uncomfortable.

The Konis are expensive, no doubt, but you can tell. Had spax on the rear of the estate. They were OK, thats about all i can say. Konis next time when its back on the road.

  6. I think you maybe over analysing this.

From here it looks to be under control. As mentioned above, your current fan switching suggests you are trying to control it to too narrow a window.

Because you now have data, you are seeing things that the rest of us are oblivious too. Dead handy though to fault find if you do have a problem.

  7. Ive got the 1 inch lowering coils from Chris Witor, Koni shocks all round and my lovely new contis. At no point on the 10CR could i get it to understeer or oversteer, even when being downright silly.

Bear in mind that if you have too much bar, it may well corner flat but you might get more understeer if you cant load the front tyre enough. And you will also reduce compliance on poor roads.

I was very pleased with the simple mods on my stag, and, after the 10CR, cant see any reason to change it. And thats from a born tinkerer! Dont under estimate how much of a difference a decent set of shocks can make. The Konis ARE expensive, but they are good.

Gill and myself both thoroughly enjoyed the event. Made some lovely new friends, saw new places and drove some great roads. And ate some delicious cakes! (and Tim, you are a thoroughly over-generous chap!)

    Cakes are good

Started on my car months ago, still working on the thing right up to the limit.

In fact, totally pi**ed off with the whole shooting match.

    Everything seems such a PITA!

Never mind, your not on your own! Same here. Despite months of work, i still have a torque convertor that isn't quite right. Just hope it hangs together. See ya there

Base Camp is very good but most certainly lacking a good manual.

To start with it depends on which maps you have loaded. The basic map set only shows the major routes and cities so you have to upload the maps from your satnav. Once that is done you can access all the details and more importantly you can save them on the PC so you don't need your satnav plugged all the time.

Also there is a box on the menu bar which allows you to select the resolution you want. To see everything you need to select "high" but not a good when zoomed out to see the whole of Europe

When I was plotting the route I had both BaseCamp and Google maps (on Firefox) open so I could switch between them. I am not aware of any method of linking them directly, but I haven't looked. It was possible to enter the start co-ordinates in google birds eye view and to actually see that it was a large public car park so I knew it was correct.

Hope that helps, but if you need any more help, we can chat at during the rally (Red TR7)

Thanks Howard, most useful. Didn't realise i could pull the maps from the sat nav!! I think Garmin want to rival Apple for the most useless instructions.

Sadly, due to the cars incessant unreliability, ive only got from now to wednesday morning to do anything, and ive got 2 14 hour days of work between now and then.

Ive done a few checks of the nav file that Andy sent out, and it seems to take you the right way, but i cant check it all. But between this and a physical map with roads missing(!) hopefully i'll get round. Im more worried about the car than getting lost.

I have moved from maps to using a Garmin Nuvi satnav (full European Maps) with their free BaseCamp software on my PC.  Using BaseCamp takes some learning, but the level of detail is amazing with even the smallest road shown on full zoom. I entered the Control Point Lat/Long then dragged and dropped the route to exactly match the road book while using Google maps (satellite view) to make sure that it is correct. (The hardest part is getting the PC to talk to the SatNav, but that is another issue)

A map is essential as a back up in case something goes wrong and we need to take an unplanned detour, but otherwise the navigator sits back and enjoys the view

PS: The Nuvi includes free map updates, so will remain accurate for a number of 10 Country Rallies.

PPS I like to look at my old map books showing the routes we have driven & I have done something similar with this. I printed out the map showing each day's route & filed it with the road book.

Can i ask how you are getting that level of detail on base camp? Mine foesn't have the smaller roads on it. Have you upgraded to birds eye? Or the google maps option (though how you make that work is one of many mysteries of Garmin related products)

  12. What "real" maps are people? using. Ive got the largest scale one available, but a lot of the roads in the book are too small to even feature on said map (phillips multiscale one). Which rather complicates using said map.

    Bit stumped on that.

Jonathan Fallowell who is up at Coventry area has a couple of boxes he is trying to shift, there is an advert somewhere on the forum. Someone did ask, but i am sure a deal could be done for the bellhousing off one of them as it is kinda urgent.

I have a type65 out back that has sat for too long so is probably no good as a gearbox anymore, but bellhousing is all there. Was on a Dolomite though, not sure if that makes a difference.

Thanks for the heads up. turns out its a 35 bell housing. Rimmers had one, so a 6am start this morning saw me at rimmers just after 8:30. Then back to work to fit it. Had to modify it too, the same as the old one.

All back and fitted now. The original issue if vibration with the convertor in lock up now gone, but the new one is just out of balance. Anything above 3000 rpm, even in neutral causes vibration. More pressing still, is after giving it a good work out the power steering pulley (on the crank) is loose. But the bolt is still fully tight.........................

How does that happen? So back to work tommorow to strip all that lot out.

It's not my gearbox that is busted,

I mistakenly thought it would be an easy job to shoehorn a dolly sprint gearbox into a GT6 🙁

    [Sorry, link no longer available]

But your original is not well?

    Ive checked my breakdown cover..........................................
