  1. Yep me too - change to team member and to the car we wish to use. ... Richard has agreed to join me, as my former co-driver's health is no longer up to the challenge. Greta gets to drive someone else's car!....gets to ride a Stag!

  3. Easy - We visit, Monte Carlo, Rome, Paris etc & SWMBO has an opportunity to shop in all the best boutiques on a budget equivalent to the event petrol budget ... Home Schooling  ... I thought you would've got the hang of this by now. Geography: map-reading, landscape geomorphology, Languages, French, Latin, German. Maths: TSD Calculations, budgeting & log keeping, Science - practical engineering ...not to mention the mind expanding experience that travel brings.   You guys just need to think a little outside the box!
  4. "Before I die ..." yes I'm sure several of us have had such thoughts this past year... well - I'm seeking others that might just have similar lifetime ambitions as me. My Hero Jean-Jacques Thuner competed in 1963 in six rounds of The European Rally Championship - these six rallies have rightly become massive classics & epitomise the very essence of 1960's rallying. Over his career he successfully completed all these rallies driving everything from a Herald, through TR3, TR4s, Spitfires and Triumph 2000s  Rally Monte Carlo, Tulip, Coupe des Alpes, Leige-Sophia-Leige, Geneve, & RAC .... mouth watering, pulse stirring names steeped in history. Reading & researching these events & the exploits of crews campaigning Triumphs one can't help but yearn for the opportunity to revisit those times. Of course we can't turn back time, nor realistically afford to participate in some of the ultra expensive modern Historic events that only the extremely rich can do; but one can afford a two week annual holiday each year. Are there any others out there that would like to join me in researching routes, & possible itineraries and then ( over the next few years ) teaming up as a small gang to drive the roads, visit the places & generally use our Triumphs in homage to the great cars & drivers of a golden era?  
  5. https://www.goplus.shell.com/en-gb/promotion/1801 I know many believe this to be a topic too hot to handle - but an open forum needs to be a place for respectable debate. if we don’t begin to acknowledge the impact that our past-time has on the planet - others will do so.  I have taken the pledge ... Shells revised Carbon Offset Scheme means that I donate 0.5p / Litre of fuel purchased towards carbon offset schemes ... and Shell match fund that donation. I know many will be sceptical & deride my efforts - but I hope others will be encouraged to at least in part offset the impact their driving has on our precious planet. By the way I believe Shell Vpower will continue to have minimal ethanol content.

  7. Similar problem myself recently - check your carbs are done up tight & your linkages are not sticking or fouling - double check your jet heights.  
  8. It's always interesting when a new post appears on an old thread... Since my initial post in early 2018 the GT6 has had no less than four separate engines! Too long a story to go into... but interesting to note that even on the newly rebuilt 4th engine I still had misfiring problems ... I guess I'm still shaking down but after being on points AND Luminition everything is much crisper on the luminition. I've no idea about the advance curves and am still on my ageing Lucas dizzy. But hey!  very much looking forward to seeing your Rally TR3A perform... Mike & Lorna Harrison used to compete successfully on HRCR events in their TR3 for several years - but not seen them recently.

So we could maybe include the western section of NC500 - with the shortcut detours shown here & so leave the central routes for RBRR proper, That would suggest an approch from SW via Fort William & then west through Glen Garry on the A87 - leaving the option of a run through the Cairngorms on the return down the eastern side.
  11.   Thanks guys - pick a section and make some suggestions. If you're an experienced RBRR participant - share your favourite routes through Wales & N. Scotland. After all this may end up being RBRR - the slow-way.
  12. That would be great Michael - I'm already thinking that there perhaps should be both an eastern and western route. I look forward to you providing detail ( gpx file, map, diagram, description ... whichever works best for you & your suggested section. We could even call it "The Dick Turpin Bywayman Rally!"

  14. Great to see some gathering interest. I can use TomTom - Route Planning "Thrill" feature to create nominal legs of 250 miles / 8 - 9 hours ( see link ) ... but this is no substitute for local knowledge & informed preferences. However, with suitable waypoints may be the way to record, refine & share route developments. I think the above time / distance is a sensible way to split the project into manageable sections ...marathon night drivers - of course could double or triple stage - but part of the joy, I hope, will be in enjoying the countryside through which we travel and having the opportunity to take comfort breaks and socialise with ones co-driver if no-one else.   15. Do you really enjoy driving your Triumph on a motorway or dual carriageway? ... or do you prefer quieter smaller roads? Looking back at the days when our cars competed in long distance rallys, watching Pathe Reel videos on Youtube - it's obvious how for many of our cars their natural environment is not blasting along an open highway but rather hustling the B roads & back routes. I wonder if there's an appetite in CT to collectively devise a back-road route from Lands End to JoG? Much of course is covered by RBRR / Border Raiders etc... but could another route be devised? A collective research project to devise a self-drive route from one end of the country to the other - that explores some of the best driving roads that are still available - yet logically links together an end to end route. A route that could be driven in as long, or short a time as you & your co-driver desire. I've explored much of the terrain between Morecambe Bay & The Pentland Firth and can suggest several options through northern Britain - but I'd very much love to learn other's suggestions for routes from Cornwall to Lancaster or York. Don't be daunted - just share your favourite route through your own county ( this thread could also hold a list of great day drives. I;m particularly interested to learn of others workable routes across & around the busy city / urban sections. Simplicity is often key but satnav assistance does allow more intricate routes to perhaps be used. Anyway - if we get stuck in another "lockdown" maybe I can persuade some of you to while away a few dark evenings plotting and sharing your favourite roads. Who knows we may even be able to devise "An Isolation Rally" where members drive the collaboration route and share here, FB & Club Torque their adventures!

Regulations for Monte Clasique have now been published: https://acm.mc/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/RMCC-REGLES_2021_2.pdf Below a summary by UK leg co-ordinator Douglas Anderson & his contact details if you are interested.   Here is a draft summary of the itinerary.  The concentration run will start on Saturday 30 January 2021 at around 11am from Banbury.  Day one of the concentration run will be in three sections ie Banbury to Dover; Calais to Reims; Reims to Langres.  There will be an overnight halt in Langres on Saturday night.  Day two of the concentration run, Sunday 31 January, the route will continue on to Valence where you are invited to join the Historiques at the buffet in the marquee adjacent to parc ferme in the centre of Valence. On Monday 1 February you will start the Common Route part 1 which goes in a loop from and back to Valence with four regularity sections.  The overnight halt on Monday at Ibis Styles TGV is included in the ACM entry fee.  On Tuesday 2 February you will go from Valence to Monaco with three regularity sections.  The overnight accommodation at the Fairmont Hotel in Monaco on Tuesday and Wednesday is included in the ACM entry fee.  On Tuesday evening you are invited to the buffet at the quay adjacent to parc ferme in Monte Carlo where you will join the Historique crews.  On Wednesday evening you are invited to the Prize-giving and Gala Dinner at the Sporting Club along with the Historique crews.  This is strictly a black tie affair. There is an overall time schedule from Valence to Monte Carlo so that you reach the Passage Controls and the Finish at the scheduled time.  The regularity sections will not be timed as regularities.   The Monte Start Committee will cover the cost of a twin/double room in Langres but you will be responsible for the first night in Valence (Sunday night).  There may be special deals at the Ibis Styles TGV.  I will find out what the arrangements are for this.  However ACM are now on holiday until the end of August. All scrutineering and documentation checks for ACM will take place in Banbury on the morning of Saturday 30 January. The online entries open on 24 August 2020. I hope that this gives you a good idea of what you can expect if you enter the 2021 Classique, but please read the regulations carefully.   20. I have to agree with John. To preserve RBRR ( and the Club's reputation ) there may be a need to give stronger advice re continuing to drive after the event. In  addition to RBRR 2018, I have recently done some mega-long drives in my Triumphs. Rolduc to Keswick & Monte Carlo to Keswick - on both occasions planned half hour catnaps resulted in being completely out cold for over two hours - & this in addition to other naps & at least 2/3 of each journey having shared the driving. ( & dozed while navigating ) Age, I think is a significant factor, as well as quality & quantity of sleep before the journey starts. Rallies such as Liege - Sophia - Liege were multi-day events with drivers clocking up enormous number of miles & hours at the wheel - but then, most were in their 20's or 30's - where, dare I say, many of us are of a more genteel vintage! I know several entrants are crews of 3 and some may only have a few miles to get home to bed but this is a topic worth highlighting. One area that could perhaps be more strongly emphasised is the length of time that the finish control is open. In the excitement of my first RBRR Phil & I were very focused on the 48 hour thing - although we did snatch a couple of short stops where we both slept - we were perhaps too focused on 48 hours getting to Knebworth about 48.05 & in the first 10 back - some cars were two hours later! Would a slightly early start on the Friday & keeping the finish control open slightly longer encourage tired drivers to take any rest they need - safe in the knowledge they will still earn a coveted finishers award? Ultimately it is the responsibility of the individual to safe-guard themselves, the event, and others on the road.
  21. Some of you may have read my article in Club Torque about Alek & I's adventure to Monaco this year. Michael Helm & Alex Flexney also enjoyed the event in their TR3A. Well, after the threat of withdrawing the Monte Classique in 2021 - Automobile Club D' Monaco are now exploring a new format with a start in Banbury, an opportunity to drive some of the Historique Rally Stages and finish in Monte Carlo. MOT Exemptions - not usually a fan of this opportunity as I believe that it's good practice to have a regular safety check - however when exploring my options to re tax my Spitfire MKIV I was invited to claim exemption. As I'm sure there'll be a massive backlog of MOT's for peoples daily drivers I've claimed exemption for the moment. In the circumstances it seemed the publically spirited thing to do.
