  1. test of some daytime running lamp kits by TCS (Touring Club Switzerland) http://www.tcs.ch/de/assets/testberichte/tagfahrlicht/testresultate-nachruest-tagfahrlichter.pdf will probably buy one of these at some point, just have to figure out which ones are the least obtrusive / can be hidden easily
  2. thanks for the replies. The easiest will be just to use some LED lamp kit and put the lamps where the fog lights are supposed to be, and to use all the wiring and relays which come with the kit, that will be easy to install and also to remove again. In principle I would prefer to fit LED lamps in the sockets of the parking lamp which would be dimmed if the parking lights are on, but this might not be legal because there will be no visible certificate, and the wiring is not so easy, what makes it even more complicated - this will apply in the case of the TR7 - there must be 4 cm distance between the LEDs and the direction indicator, otherwise the LEDs have to go out while the direction indicators are lit. On the other hand the MOT will probably not require anything because you can always drive around with dimmed headlights, so I am not in a hurry to do anything right now anyway, some better idea might come along.
  3. Hi Howard thanks. The new law here is that the lamps have to be at least 0.6 m apart and over 0.25 m from the ground, guess you did that so. Hi Mike I have read that you could drive with dipped and even dimmed dipped headlights, but I have also read that the lights have to go on automatically, not sure. In the case of the Triumph TR7 (and Porsche 928 which is one of my other cars) I would really hate that for aesthetic reasons though, and also the drag is much higher of course. Has somebody found a solution to modify the parking lights with LEDs? Maybe somebody from a Country where daytime running lamps are also obrigatoral? Regards Thomas
  4. Hi has anybody got a good solution for daytime running lamps (like LEDs in parking light or something), as they become obrigatoral in Switzerland by 2014? Thanks Thomas
  5. Yes. I could in principle have the changes I made (brake discs, uprated springs, anti-dive blocks, different exhaust) have tested and registered in the vehicle papers. But the car will only get the 'vetaran status' if it is in good original condition; period accessories would in principle be allowed but I would need proof that they are period which is not very easy. Of course much is up to the MOT expert, I probably just had bad luck; he measured the rear silencer box to be 320 x 130 mm, where the original is 340 x 150 mm ... once it is noted down there is not much you can do about it.

  7. @Howard: thanks for the offer. I have a copy of 'Triumph TR7 Repair Operation Manual from 1978'. There is a wiring diagram on p. 340; as far as I can tell the fog lights are independent of the main beams, but the side lights and the tail lamps are switched by the master light switch and the fog light switch. In my case (done probably by the p. o.) only the front fog lamps were switched, so at least that was wrong (also as I mentioned above, there were no fog tail lamps). @Beans: Quote:MOT testers shouldn't think, they should know it's wrong, and if they don't know for sure they should shut up Actually to my disadvantage he was mostly right, the fog lights was only the smallest fault. I had to replace my slotted brake discs, front and rear springs, and the rear silencer box with original items, also had to remove the anti-dive blocks under the front cross bar. Next Tuesday there will be the follow-up testing; if I will pass it I will have the 'veteran' status and I won't have to show the car to the MOT for six years.

  9. Meanwhile I have completely removed the fog lights. Just disconnecting them will not be allowed - if they are there they will have to work (I will even hide the switch unter some black tape). The front fog lights were connected to red/yellow wires, so probably that was correct (there were no rear fog lights). The question is whether the fog lights were originally completely independent of the normal lighting which the MOT expert thinks is wrong.

  11. Hi My fog lights could be switched on independently of the beams; I had to go to the MOT and they complained that the fog lights were not connected properly. I admit that on other cars you have to switch on the beams and only then the fog lights can be switched on, with the beams going out at the same time. But in the case of the TR7 I used the fog lights rather as driving lights (so I don't want the beams to go off when they are on). Does anybody know how the fog lights were connected originally? (and did the fog light switch also switch the tail lamps?) Thomas

  13. Electronic ignition for Delco distributor: I fitted the Aldon Ignitor to suit 4 cylinder Delco D302-7992715 distributors fitted to Triumph TR7, Delco - D302 - 4 Cylinder MR-LS2  (£80). So far it has worked very well (engine starts first try at all temperatures, perfect ignition at all revs up to rev limit, no flat spots).
  14. Hi Beans hope the new paint job will last (forever ) Thomas
  15. Hi Beans just read your weblog. It was nice meeting you. I am glad you enjoyed it over here 🙂 See you Thomas PS: greetings to Ren
  16. Hi Beans > you can always bribe me over to Switzerland for a decent beer You are very welcome ... the last TR7 I clearly remember to have seen was our neighbour's in the early 80ies. The fact that our neighbour had one probably was the reason I got interested in the one I bought. ... so if you can make it a little bit further West ... (sent you a PM) Thomas
  17. Hi Beans where in the Alps will you go to? I live in the Bernese Oberland, have been on the Susten, Grimsel, Jaun pass etc. already in my TR7, all in all already 3000 km since I bought it (not much more than 2 months ago). Normally people from NL arrive here in underpowered cars with trailers or motorhomes, are terribly afraid of height and are considered (hardly) moving obstacles 😉 Thomas
  18. Hi Beans the earth lead (engine to body) which is visible in the 2nd picture you posted May 23, 2010, 9:03pm, is it supposed to be there or is it custom? If it is custom, did you remove the small earth lead from the battery to the body? Where is it connected to the engine? Thomas
  19. Hi Beans just saw that you have got a stainless steel clutch line (as well) 😀. Thomas
  20. cool Where did you get that strut tower brace from? Does it make a big difference?
  21. Beans your restoration is superb. Cheers Thomas
