  2. 97679 wrote:It's available second-hand though if you know who to ask  ;) The problem with secondhand is that it will likely be as badly scratched as the one being replaced but how about this for an idea; On US cars the scratched glass will be the LHS whilst  on UK cars it will be the RHS. Generally through light use the respective passenger glasses will be pretty good. So how about an exchange US to UK and vice versa? No, that won't work there is a basic flaw.

  5. 2597 wrote:will stainless 6mm od (1mm wall) tube bend ok in a set of small pipe benders (brake pipe benders)or will it too hard to bend? What do you think? Yes it will bend fine. I used it when plumbing in the header tank.
  6. thebrookster wrote: I think John Bonnett was ahead of you there!! Though he was muttering something about stopping the project a while back, no idea what he is up to now?? He went through not so much a mid-life crisis more and end of life crisis but that's past now and the project is back on track.  ;) However, there are some jobs on the GT6 which are taking priority like fitting a new interior and refurbishing the seats. I did have a little play at pulling out and stretching the outer wheel arch for a rear wing and it doesn't look too difficult. I'm really looking forward to getting back to a bit of metal shaping and will post progress as it happens.
  7. I thinks the only explanation is that the hinges are bent which could possibly happened if a gust of wind got under the open tailgate. This would have had the effect of slightly straightening the hinge and displacing the tailgate.
  8. 796 wrote:John, just been into shed and looked at the spare hinge bit i ev. there are no elongated holes to move it forads. but you may get a wee bit, for the bolts are not tight on the fixing. it maybe that the hinges are bent, wrong shape.  has it been like this for long.!! you may be able to elongate the holes a wee bit, so it moves forad, but may also need to pack it up as well. TIP, if fiddling with the tail gate on yer own, its hard work trying to get the bolts in whilst tightening em up I put studs in the actual tail gate, so that the studs hold it in place, much much easier whenst on yer own you got a pic of hoo bad it fits.!! M Thank you Marcus for taking the trouble to check your hinges and for your reply. Here are a couple of pictures that show the gaps. It has always been like it, well as long as I have had the car.
  9. The tailgate on my car needs to be pushed up towards the roof if you understand me. The panel gap on the lower edge is almost an overlap whereas at the top along the line of the roof it is obviously too much. Anyone else had this problem and is there a solution? Thank you for your help. John
  10. Hi Mark, When we scrapped our old 405 diesel,I kept the battery which was nearly new at the time and it fitted very nicely into the GT6 battery box and the terminals were in the correct orientation. It was my feeling that if the battery was good enough to start a diesel it would easily cope with a two litre petrol engine. Not too expensive. Here is the modern equivalent on Ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VARTA-BLUE-D48-005R-Car-Battery-60Ah-540CCA-/250871523908?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3a691baa44 Below is a picture of the installation in my car.

(Although some of us look like that all the time! ;D) Look forward to seeing you.  :) Likewise Radders. I've done one or two endurance events myself and I know the feeling. I also know how seeing a friendly face can lift the flagging spirits. Thing I can't get my head round is how can the whole entry get through the control if it is only open for an hour between 05.07 and 06.07hrs? Perhaps someone could explain to me how it works. With many thanks John
  13. royboy66 wrote:Hey John !  Be good to meet you at stupid o clock somewhere down there !  ;D Come say hello , may be a bit red eyed though! Roy  8) It will be really good to meet you Roy and I'll certainly do my best to be at the Okehampton Control to lend my support and encouragement. I think it is a tremendous undertaking and a credit to all who are taking part in whatever capacity. I'll be happy to pass on my telephone number, just drop me a PM. John
  14. Jason wrote:Thanks John, the control is at the Whithouse Services on the A30 and is formally open from 05.07 to 06.07 Thank you Jason. Is that on Sunday morning?
  15. I'd just like to reaffirm that I'll be happy for any entrants to have the use of my workshop facilities if needed. Could you please let me know when the Okehampton Control is open so that I can pop down and offer my encouragement. Best wishes to all competitors John
  16. One more The stainless pipe Tees off the bottom hose, not the petrol pipe  ;)
  17. 3310 wrote:John, can I pick your brains about your Golf rad / Astra header tank installation? The header tank has 2 x 8mm outlets ; 1 which is connected to the 17mm outlet on the thermostat cover via a reducer pipe (which I've still to make). I'm assuming that the second one goes to the 8mm outlet on the top offside of the rad? Or have you just blanked these latter two off? Many thanks              John You are quite right John, I've blanked them both off. I've not had a problem with airlocks so I don't think it is essential to connect the two. Here are a few pictures of the installation on my car; I hope they are helpful. John
  18. 242 wrote:Sorry folks for a non Triumph post, but heres the 66 Tiger, caught fire in 72 , badly shot blasted then left in a damp lockup for 30+ years. I would really like a LAT vented bonnet, John. http://www.sunbeamtiger.co.uk/index2.htm just look for Brads Tiger. RR Found it. Brad I just love the Tiger. I competed in the '92 Mitsubishi Classic Marathon and Rosemary Smith was running close to  us in an ex-Works car. Had a few problems with overheating but the sound of the V8 was sheer music. Anyway  back to your bonnet, I'm going to have my hands very full with the project and making a Spitfire bonnet is a life's work in itself. However, I have a friend in the metal shaping business who is very good and he may well be pleased to make you a bonnet. I can  let you have his email address if this is of interest. Considerably less work in a Tiger bonnet than a Spit I would have thought. Mark is currently working on a half size Mercedes Streamliner. Pic attached. Perhaps hear from you John
  19. 242 wrote:You can still look at them i just won't be there, perhaps you could do a LAT ali bonnet for the Tiger for me? :P :P :P
  20. 242 wrote: Back to work on Monday the 10th i'm afraid. RR Ah, that's a downer, I was looking forward to seeing you and your cars. Never mind, perhaps next time we are over it might work out. John
  21. 3141 wrote: PM sent. It could work out very nicely. I hope your working hours don't get in the way  ;) Red Rooster, Are we on for next week?
  22. 4187 wrote: I would be interested if it ever came to fruition as I'm part way through my restoration, I have repaired the roof but need to leave my options open in case my repair is not good enough. I think you are doing an incredible job on your rebuild and the whole thread is an inspirational read; absolutely amazing and I take my hat off to you. The car is going to be fantastic and an absolute credit to your skill and craftsmanship. As far as the roof panel is concerned, I'm quite sure your repair will be more than adequate. However I will send you a PM when I get to work on the roof. This may not be within your time scale because I've got the frame for the body to build first and like all things it is bound to take a lot longer than I'm expecting and you may be at the painting stage by then. I will keep in touch.
  23. That's great work John; I take my hat off to you. Fibreglass does have many advantages, particularly its ease of repair and of course resistance to corrosion. It is very satisfying to have made something from scratch from whatever material you decide to use. It's what  special building is all about. John
  24. No pressure then  :P I'll try to keep progress updated in the Specials thread.
