I liked the idea of the white piping and he said he can do this for just another £15. Been distracted with other jobs through the summer but its definately one of my winter jobs now, to be ready for next summer.
  2. That does look rather pretty. I expect it will create a lot more interest on the road than a Spitfire ever would too  ;)
  3. I love it when i see home fabricated panel work and patches. Shows what people are capable of and gives me a bit of confidence to try some myself. Good work!  ;)

    GT6 seats.

BrendanD wrote:Benny they look awful..... Park Lane classics do the foams for £160 a pair, and the covers in vinyl for £135 both seats. Top quality stuff. For That order Park Lane Classics give a 10% reduction too. i emailed them the other week regarding new covers and foam. He said he will do contrasting piping for just £15 extra too. My seats need a compete refurb too so even though i am probably doing some jobs out of the correct order of priority i am about to order from him so i can get the seats sorted for the summer (rest of the car might be a bit tatty though  :( )
  5. Cheers guys, All sounds like good info. The smallest wire my welder will run is 0.8mm, but i guess i could get a smaller roller? I was also thinking that about 0.8mm is a fair guess at the panel thickness and this was the size of steel sheet i was planning on buying.
  6. Have done lots of searches but cant seem to find a definitive answer to how thick the metalwork is on spitfire body panels. Anyone know, and also are the floorpans the same thickness? Im curious as i need to weld some patches in. Im not a super experienced welder so need to give myself a fighting chance. I figured that if the patch material is the same thickness then it will be easier to weld up. :o

Has the L bracket for the copper pipe on the opposite side of the upper wishbone. I think it must have been amended by a P.O at some time. Right from the original production of the GT's the front caliper had a loop of rigid pipe connecting to the flexible hose then back to rigid pipe (two 'L' brackets would have been fitted per assembly. ... Not being a smarty pants, but i am at this very moment reading John Thomasons guide to originality book and have just got to the GT6 MKI section. Front brake assembly came from the Vitesse 2.0 MKI which was a beefier set up than the simpler Spitfire arrangement which was derived from the smaller engined Heralds.
  8. Amazing job. It's not something that i would want to do to a Spitfire (i'm more into the originality side) but then again, it's also something that i wouldn't have the knowledge or skills to do either. Hats off to your idea and the very successful outcome... Quite humbling i think  :)
  9. If you need a small amount of dry graphite lubricant (i.e for an ignition lock) but don't happen to have a tin lying around, sand down the lead only of the softest pencil you can find (6B ideally) it contains a higher proportion of graphite to clay to harder pencils. A tip my dad showed me many years ago.
  10. I needed a new RHS one for mine for pretty much the same reason. I managed to find a clean one on ebay for £3. I'm sure too that i saw a pair advertised on ebay just a few days ago too.
  11. Jeeze, who would have imagined that setting the tappet clearances could end up such a potentially pricey job! I had heard of the rule of 9's but didnt use that technique on mine. Since there are only 8 tappets to set and the wheel was a comfy perch i just took my time and did them one cylinder at a time measuring the opposite valve to the one that appeared fully open. Thinking back though, some of them felt quite tight (<10 thou) before i set about them. I guess the P.O had adjusted them to compensate for some wear. I'll have another play at the weekend (won't get a chance till then) and see if i can make it any better. I'll strip them down too Gaz and let you know what i find  :)

I may take you up on it soon, or just use it as an excuse to nip round sometime  ;) Hope you and Gaz are both well... Along with your cars! Thanks too for the suggestions made so far. The worn rockers actually sounds like a realistic answer. I will dismantle them next time i'm meddling and check them out. The suggestion of the rockers sliding on the shaft sounds plausible too. I did think the springs on the two outer rockers were a bit feeble at centring them.. More worn/fun to embark upon i guess  :)
  13. Spent about 30 mins today setting the tappets on the Spit. 10 thou all round says Mr Haynes, which i duly set. The car now sounds like a worn out sewing machine! Is there a knack to setting tappets that i don't know? My attack was to set each one when it's opposite valve was open, i would assume that no rising part of the cam was then in contact with the pushrod of the tappet i am setting. It's easy enough to start the whole process again i suppose, just wondered if anyone had any pearls that might help.. :)
  14. Richard_B wrote:Looks very good. How much does the cleaning and e-coating cost (approx)? My question too when i first saw it all lovely and naked  ;)
  15. Hi Gaz, Great to meet you too pal, and thanks a million for the push rod and almost three hours of advice. You have really got me thinking about my 'priority list of jobs now. Some more urgent than others before i try out broadhead in anger! ;) VERY impressed with your motor too, it's an excellent example of what can be done to one of these cars and still keep it looking original. I have just PM'd Chris so i'll see what transpires. Dont know whether i should really just stump up the cash and get new though really. Still i'm sure they will be worth looking over. BTW... I reckon your 'Salmon' steering wheel looks the biz..... Now i'm off to go polish my rocker cover  ;) Hopefully see you and a few others Friday (including tiggrr1)
