  1. Well done That Man - that solves it - I have the small journal camshaft

  3. I'm about to replace the camshaft in my newly acquired (rebuilt) 1147 engine. I'm rather confused (easily done) regarding the camshaft journals. I'm being asked if I want a camshaft with large or small journals. I don't have a micrometer to hand but the journals on the camshaft I've removed are around 46.5mm measured with a vernier. Is this a large or small journal? Thanks Roger

  5. I marked an arc on the return lip of the rear wings on my Vitesse and then carefully used an angle grinder to remove metal to the marked line. A quick rub with fine grade emery paper took off the slight rough edge. I then painted the edge created. No damage to the wing paint work and wheel rubbing had disappeared. Roger
  6. There have been a few Trippers advertised in the last couple of years - only "restoration projects" as far as I can recall. Here's one such resto - probably still being done : https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.599351026801208.1073741870.434236709979308&type=3 Another was advertised on Ebay in June last year. Roger
  7. John - I'm certain you haven't advised me before because I haven't ever considered doing this before  ;) I only want to have a flat face on the head - not a particularly high compression ratio. The question was asked by the company that are sorting the head out for me. They have been doing this sort of thing for years so it seemed a fair question to pose. Roger
  8. I've just suffered a blown head gasket in my 12/50 engined Midge. I'm having the head skimmed to ensure its flat but I don't want a ridiculously high compression ratio so need to be a bit careful as it looks like the head has been skimmed before. Can anyone tell me please the height of the 12/50 head when it left the factory? Roger
  9. Yes Mark, the stance of your Midge does look right. I thought I would go the swing spring route to get better handling - not sure if it has worked but certainly seem to have a retrograde step as far as stance is concerned.
  10. Thanks for the information Bill. I think I'll go for a lowering block.
  11. I think there were seven leaves in the old spring, but the replacement (Spitfire spring) has five leaves.
  12. Thanks for the responses. Just thinking about the geometry of the suspension, is it the case that the flatter the spring the greater the positive camber?
  13. On the subject of rear springs, I fitted a swing spring to my Herald based Midge using the Spitfire spring given that the Midge is lighter and has limited carrying capacity. I now find that I have increased positive camber compared to the standard Herald spring that preceded it. I guess I could fit a lowering block to reduce the positive camber (which remains an option), but has anyone any ideas why this has happened?
  14. Thanks for the reply Bill. The replacement caliper arrived today and fits perfectly so it was obviously a problem with the reconditioning of the non-fitting caliper. Whilst both calipers appeared the same, I did notice on the one that wouldn't fit that the two halves had a different profile at the top of the caliper where the rebate for the disc is. One side was about 3/16" longer than the other. Anyway, problem solved - thanks.
  15. I've just replaced the calipers on my 1965 12/50 based Midge and had assumed them to be type 12s. However, it appears they were type 14s. I ordered reconditioned type 12s with new discs and fitted the offside with no problem. However, the nearside caliper will not clear the disc - when the top caliper fixing bolt is attached, the top of the caliper fouls the disc and leaves the lower fixing hole some 2 cm away from where it needs to be located. The supplier is being very helpful and sending another caliper immediately so I hope its just a problem with manufacture. I assume that the type 12 and type 14 calipers are interchangeable up to a point. Is the same diameter brake disc used for type? Roger
  16. I had a similar problem with my old "one man bleeding (?) tube" on a 12/50 based special. In the end I bought a £5.99 jobby from Halfords that comes with a reservoir to hold the discharged brake fluid. :) I removed the rubber sleeve from the end because the pressure needed to force fluid through it was so great that fluid was spewing out of the bleed nipple thread, and then blew the pipe off the nipple. It did require the services of the "management" to pump the pedal, but at least the job got done without fluid going everywhere! Roger
  17. Just managed to find a hoop Jason - without the bonnet - thanks.
  18. My Vitesse has had a front ender at some stage which has compressed the bend in the bonnet hoop. To compensate, and get a reasonable bonnet fit, the hinge bracket has been extended downwards for the location of the pivot pin - hardly the most professional route to repair. However, I suspect that removing to hoop and trying to bend it to the right shape will not be easy and may distort it even more. Are these hoops available anywhere as new or NOS, or has anyone any other suggestions please?
