  1. I've lost a pin from one of my Early Spit/Herald type boot hinges, and am trying to remove one from an old hinge as a replacement . Any hints as to how to remove it? Don't fancy buying a new pair of hinges for the sake of a pin!!!!! The pin [according to my mk3 parts book] was available as a spare item so...... Yours hopeful..... Alex

He's my spare wheel in Ford Diamond White, maybe too white? Looks nice but as I've only done one of my 5 I may try another shade? Alex
  3. Thanks, going for it today, after a recent problem with my oil pump I sourced a new gauge and pipe kit. Wasn't happy with placement and routing [and of course the oil pressure was fine] so returned it, but after I'd sent it a mate offered me one so I thought I'd give it a go. Will try and sneak it through an existing hole, Cheers! Alex
  4. Hi Folks, What's the best way to route the pipe from the block to gauge on a Mk3 Spit? Thought I'd ask before I got the drill out. One complication is it's been used before [good provenance so know it's ok], and the connectors have been fitted to the pipe so I'd have to drill some huge holes in the bulkhead. One idea I had was to route it through the gearbox tunnel area? Any ideas? Cheers, Alex

Could have changed though, just a thought, Alex
  6. Your car being from 67 should be (spa???) white, don't think the later silver suits it tbh. But then I like to keep some things original. I've done my originals in Ford Diamond white as recommended by someone on here (or on t'other side?), sorry I can't remember who ::) Anyhow they look the business, closest to original I've seen, just chucking my opinion your way, Cheers, Alex

    Low Oil Pressure

Thanks Nick, Everything was torqued up ok - what's annoying is how wll it was running. Something's "gone", think it's time to get the engine out and have a peek? What a bummer Ta, Alex

    Low Oil Pressure

Hi Folks, Mk3 Spitfire - standard spec -  just replaced the timing chain and dropped the sump in the process - checked and cleaned the oil pump. Fitted it all back together and ran the engine static for 20 mins or so - was really pleased as it a lot smoother than before. Revved it a bit when warm [was still smooth and a lot quieter], then drove it carefully for about 5 mins on decent stretch stretch of road, all was fine. Stopped at lights, oil pressure light came on [& i don't mean flickering - full on, very bright]. Drove on and the engine sounded rough as...well, like a bag of nails. Pulled over, checked for leaks - bone dry everywhere , plenty of oil in sump. Waited 15 mins or so, topped it up with a bit of oil just to make sure....... and limped home very carefully. Any ideas???? I suspect the oil pump as I can't think of anything else that would suddenly kick-in like it did. Ta, Alex
  9. Aldon for me too, Fit and forget - smoother & deffo more power (not loads but enough to notice). Got an Accuspark as spare in the boot just in case. Alex
  10. Done!   Mr. Haynes to the rescue - was resisting hammer & screwdriver but had to in the end. Alex
  11. Hi Folks, Trying to remove the timing cover oil seal - any tips? All I seem to be doing is stripping the rubber away. Yours frustrated, Alex

  13. I've been running halogens with a dynamo on my Mk3 Spit for around 3 years now, including a lot of daily winter driving. Had no problems but I did always intend to fit an alternator but never got around to it. I'm sure they would be brighter with one, but they are still a lot better than the original sealed type. Alex
  14. I have an early Spit [fd7****] with the single retainer and the newer seal fitted, seems to work just fine. So much so I was unaware there was a change. I also have the two side pieces of the retainer [as jens mentions above] from the later Mk3/MkIV [bought in error years ago as i thought i was missing something]. They seem to be the same profile as my single-piece retainer, but no way do they constitute the whole of the single retainer, they just seem to take account of the bend around the edge? Alex
  15. 4457 wrote:Thanks for the advice/ pictures , so am I right in saying you have to drill through the boards to attach the hood frame? There should be pre-cut holes on the back of the board which are covered by the vinyl. Car looks great! Alex

    Hood pop rivets

I had the same problem, it's not the size of the rivets, it's the nozzle of the gun. I bought one last week from Machine Mart, it has small thin nozzle that fits completely inside the the stud, allowing you to get your whole body weight behind it. There was no "bounceback", the rivet attaches firmly, took about 5 mins to do all of them. Forget which make it is, cost around £18 and is yellow! Alex
