  1. The 3 rails is more waggly by design and then the exposed bushes start to wear pretty quickly so making it worse. However it is easier to use and some people prefer that to the modern feel of the single rail change...

  2. Is all this really necessary for a standard car though? In over 35 years of ownership of my Vitesse (alright not done as many miles as it should😒) I had the original mechanical pump wear out its non return valves so got a very cheap replacement pump and slapped it on with out issue. Then I put new valves in the old one and its ready to go...

  3. To be fair I read it (and see on their video) that you set the engine to its correct timing BEFORE removing the old dizzy. Then you install the 123 unit and, without turning the engine, rotate its body until its LED just lights which means your timing is then set as before. You do it up in this position which allows you to start the engine and check the timing with a strobe....

  4. As far as overdrive gearboxes go the single rail is more robust having both the larger synchro rings and bigger mainshaft tip arrangement plus a gear change mechanism that is less prone to wear. However they are an inch longer than the 3 rail OD and some dont like the operation of the gear change as much as the earlier design...

In the end it probably comes down to whatever you can get at a reasonable price (dont forget to factor in all the ancilliary components) and then the cost of it checking/overhauling it. With this last point maybe getting the overdrive version of your current unit would be sensible as then there might be components you can use if needed...

Cannot believe we are arguing about this, the 3.63:1 diff is the best compromise for a car to have reasonable acceleration and cruising speed.

No arguments here just sharing thoughts n experiences as originally requested by Mark👍

  6. Its only my opinion because theres far more suitable cars for racing and driving hard with numerous gear changes and also others much better for high speed cruising. Above I did say 'toodle in town' outside of that I like to use the Vitesse torque to get a move on preferrably using country A roads.

I remembered why the Vitesse ended up with a 'close ratio' gearbox - not for sportiness but because the engine torque is that high a low first gear would be practically redundant. Triumph actually suggested using 2nd gear for all pull aways other than steep hill starts....

  7. Hmmm the speed limit in towns is 30mph or lower so pootling is exactly what you should be doing! Then one of the Vitesse benefits is its relatively high and wide torque band so theres no need to be constantly switching gears. I think you have the wrong car if you want to race around....

My Mk1 2L O/D Vitesse diff is getting to the point of needing to be replaced, it currently has a 3.89 diff which is correct for the car but I was thinking of putting in a 3.63 diff to give it longer legs on motorway driving but was wondering how much it would knock down performance.
Looking at the MintyLamb web site at 70 mph a 3.63 would drop the Rpm by 221 which in my mind is not going to take to much off the performance.
Has anyone got any thoughts or experience they can share.

Wow Im surprised you want to go that fast on motorways as I find the wind noise of my Vitesse prohibitive! I would have thought the OD sufficient to keep the revs low enough at any comfortable cruising speed...

The main issue for me changing the diff ratio (and I dont have OD) is that I wouldnt be able to toodle round town in 4th as I currently do. I find this really good for extending gearbox life and also a relaxing way to drive.

Yes, the engine is an original with relatively low mileage… just under 47,000mls. It just seems sluggish , Do you any ideas?

What diff ratio have you got currently? Maybe its been changed to a 3.27 great for cruising but but not acceleration...

Funny what Rutty says as I drive my Vitesse like a diesel using the low down torque so I can get into 4th as quick as possible and save my gearbox!

Mk2 vitesse is not sluggish. But back in the day they were a quick motor. Today their performance is pretty average compared to other cars on the road.

Promo back in the day was: Faster accelerating than an E type Jag!......0 - 30mph.

  11. Certainly you dont want the tang of a helicoil falling inside when you finish and snap it off! However a small vacuum cleaner modified with a flexible piece of plastic hose taped on the end could be used to suck out any debris in the combustion chamber...
