  1. Its then time to slide the covers on, the instructions recommended glueing plastic onto the edges of the seat frame to help slide them on. I tried without this and had no problems at all. It takes a while to make sure the cover is pulled down evenly making sure its nice and straight. Starting with the left and right outer most padding i strated to tack the cover to the plywood using 6mm upholstery tacks, whilst doing this i kept the cover under tension by pulling it taught. The material in the centre gets doubled over before tacking.
  2. The next stage was to remove the lumbar support foam out of the original squab covers and glue them inside the new covers, I used Evostik 528 contact adhesive for this , it worked quite well. The edge of the foam goes flush with bottom of the ribbed section.
  3. Some more progress made last night. Started by glueing the cotton material around the edges of the seat backs using spray contact adhesive. The material is hard to work with, i guess it just stops the edge of the seats rubbing through the covers.
  4. Hi All, Cut the rubberised horse hair material to shape and stuck to the seat back using contact spray adhesive. Manged to salvage the strips either side from the original material before glueing. Now to glue the cotton material on, not sure if its man enough??? :-/
  5. Plywood being held in place with mole grips whilst riveting.
  6. Manged to get the seats painted with all this nice weather :) I also replaced the wood with 6mm ply cut to 180mm in length.  Soaked it in boiling water it then bends easily into place and riveted using peel/bannana rivets.
  7. Thanks for the heads up Alex. Waiting for some good weather to finish spraying the frame and runners etc. Just aswell I kept the old covers!
  8. Is it possible to clamp the rings tight with a normal pair of pliars?
  9. Hi Alex, I''ve not come to this yet, I have heard of people using cable ties?
  10. Thanks for the quick feedback guys glad to find out it's not just me. Will have another look , I like the idea of Velcro
  11. Hi All, Started to fit the passenger side glovebox last night and couldnt see an obvious solution for this flap "circled in photo". Does it attach somewhere or just sit as it is? Cheers Jamie
  12. Thanks for the heads up, not to sure what you mean by strapping the back to base?
  13. Received the seats back from the blasters yesterday, re-tapped the 10/32 threads that hold the seat hooks on. Then started to weld up the areas that had cracked and broken.
  14. Thanks for the pictures and advice , much appreciated. What kind of wood did you use Jens h ? Any idea on the recommended material for covering the edges of the horse hair?
  15. Thanks for the heads up on the eBay covers I almost bought them a few days back ??) I think newtons supply James paddocks so will probably purchase from them. Yes I kept the horse hair, but will need something for the edges? I was thinking of trying to get some strips of plywood and attach them with peel rivets, not sure how well the wood will bend though.... Runners should come up nice from the blasters this week , then it's time to get busy with the welding on the runners and seat frames. Jamie
  16. Hi All, Due to the lack of information i could find on the net about restoring the early spitfire seats ive decided to start this thread. I have stripped the covers of my seats and sent them to the blasters. Can anyone tell me if the new covers come with the foam attached like the orignals i have taken off? The pictures on the usual suppliers websites make them look rather flat & un padded. Regards Jamie
  17. After Jens H posting the picture of the NOS handbrake gaiter i decided to make a similar one with some kydex 1mm sheeting. The handbrake now operates nicely without the gaiter being pulled out of the carpet all the time.  :)
  18. Thanks for the feedback guys. Wim did you use pop rivets for the studs? After using allot of force I managed to get the h frame installed , I dry fitted the nice shiney radio I was bought as a present and the gear lever smashes into it when selecting 1st gear haha  :B
  19. Cheers JensH, That explains allot, cant seem to find one of those being sold anywhere so i may have to cut a bit of hardboard up and staple the gaiter to it
  20. Wim, Is there any chance you could post some pictures of how the poppers attach to  the footwell? Im also having trouble with getting the handbrake gaiter flap to stay in the carpet cut out. :-/ Managed to get the gearbox tunnel carpet sitting nicely, had to make some cuts for the foot rest and steering column though. Cheers Jamie
