  1. Now that HAS lowered the tone!  ;) My friend has a minty-mint mk3 GT6 and a just as sweet very late 2.8 Special in red (same colour as yours?). Both totally original and in beyond fab condition. Lovely to hear the Capri burble past when it comes out for a tickle.  :) Where was the picture taken?
  2. Doug P. I read the entire thread as a (not so) subtle attempt to raise the ire of the man called McJim.  :) It is easy to see how it could however been read as you saw it.  :B I will be appalled if the Scots decide to call it a day. It will have massive and far reaching consequences- not the least being financial. I see the whole thing as driven by utterly vested interest of one flavour or another, be that the Yes vote or the No vote, rather than a rational discussion on what is best for the people of these 2 countries as a whole. I find it utterly incredulous that in these days of nescessary financial restriant, anyone can sensibly argue the case for scottish devolution or English regional devolution?  The last thing this country needs is more bloody politicians!' :-/
  3. Hi Bill- not stalking you, just logged in by chance! Not sure- I bought mine pre-built some years ago, save me marmalising a PCB and componants in the build. as you say, the world may have moved on in the ifollowing 10 years.
  4. I agree the quality of the available points/condensors is very hit or miss. Seems quite some expence to go through though for peace of mind, as compared to alleviating a current problem?  :-/ You know my preference for the end set-up, but if what you have is working ok. I'd ring Canley and ask for some quality points/condensors. The money for the new 'whizz-bang' dizzy could easily be catered for with this winters culling of old the existing car battery, failure of solonoid, Alternator etc. if you're putting the car to regular use. You could check the advance rate of the existing dizzy with a strobe light just to see if the springs are tired? It would be good if someone could post some hands-on experiance of using the 123 dizzys in their Triumph- surely someone must have done it? :-/
  5. Whats up with the current dizzy install- is it beyond new distibutor springs/points/condensor and a quick (RR) tune-up?
  6. Please excuse appalling spelling- most of my entries here are on my phone and it is a right royal pain in the arse to use. I see no value at all in fitting HIF38's to a standard GT6. I suspect they will be way too tall, you will have to make up a specific throttle linkage(not difficult in itself), the accelerator cable linkage will require reworking and that's what springs to mind immediately. Strombergs are lovely carbs and are unfairly much maligned on ocassion by those who are too tight to get them reconditioned properly, after 40 years+ service!  ;)
  7. My car is a Rover silver- sorry, I don't know the code. The HIF38 are fitted with the even taller dashpot dampers which allow even further upward travel of the piston. Do your crabs have an ID tag on them. You certainly shouldn't fit shorter despot piston. In your situation, I wouldnt go to the trouble and effort to fit HIF38 crabs over the perfectly well engineered and reliable Strombergs.
  8. I thought just occured to me- have you checked bonnet clearence? The SU's are quite tall and this is yet another area that may require phaff and buggeration (it did for me)  :)
  9. Fred- here is a basic overview. I did connect the crankcase breather as compared to what he says as it made a massive calming effect on the engine running with it connected (try running your engine now with it blanked off) http://www.minimania.com/article/762/SU_CARBS_-_Connection__HIF_type Why do you want to fit the SU HIF carbs? My car is far from standard and it made sense to go through all the expense and phaff of needle/spring selection etc. If your car is largely standard, then the Strombergs are excellent carbs, very reliable and your efforts would be best spent on looking at getting them reconditioned/renewed.  :)
  10. It's simplicity itself. I will get back to you but might be Friday evening, due to work and other commitments :)
  11. I have 3 HIF38's fitted on my go-faster GT6. Very reliable carb and certainly the best engineered of all the SU's, by some margin. IIRC you may struggle to readily find a handed pair, they were usually fitted to little Metro's etc. They are very relaible in use and can easily be rebuilt at home(provided the throttle spindle bushes arn't too worn). Working the choke off 1 carb alone is easily possibly- my 3 RH carbs only have 2 connected to the choke and when 1 of those lost the conencting screw(my fault), the car was still very eager to start only using 1 choke. People seem to focus negatively on the HIF bimetalic strip causing issues with wandering tickover but that's not something I have a probelm with and I get loads of heat off my exhaust onto my carbs. I think they're lovely!  :)
  12. The float bowls may be 'staggered' slightly, to allow for the rearward slope of the engine alignment in the saloon(IIRC?) Float chambers should have a part number clearly evident- again Burlen will be able to identify- or i can look when i get home? Check the current needles- they should have a legend on the side- easy to check. The piston spring can be checked for length when removed, this makes a difference as well. Is there an engine number for reference too? You appear to have 2500TC derived carbs, is it a 2500TC engine on the correct manifold or are these HS6 carbs bolted onto the GT6 manifold on a 2 litre engine? Trying to get it set-up properly implies it might not be at the mo- are you thinking the carbs are mal-adjusted or in a worn state of tune?  :)
  13. Ditto! :) Alex wrote: My thoughts as well, I'd be inclined to retime it to no1
  14. Confident the ignition leads are round the ri- oh. He beat me to it!  ;D
  15. Not the old chestnut of dead fuel is it? If the engine has been rebuilt- how long has the fuel been standing in the tank?
  16. I should say i've done it in a GT6(small but perfectly formed) and a saloon. :) I haven't done it in a small engined car. GT6boy wrote: Size isn't important to me... I've not done it in a small car, but for me the RBRR is all about the fun of being able to press, in a manner which isn't largely possible these days, with like minded individuals on roads that i didn't think existed anymore. I'd be happy to have a smaller engined car, just as long as it was still capable of putting in a good show. 48hrs of encouraging and enjoying a little mild mannered vehicle has an appeal, but not for me.

  18. Why do some people appear to take constructive discussion as overt criticism? :/ I understand peoples concerns, but my experience is that the event is easily achievable 2 up: the bottom line is plan properly and rest before and during. I don't think any of our fellow contributors were advocating the event be changed?
  19. Indeed, there do appear a fair number of triple CD installs on other motors, but I remain concerned that there is paucity of back to back or evidential testing to show quantative results for the Triumph install. Have you enquired of the suppliers for quantative results? Surely if they have been producing this product for 20+ years, they would have something approaching before/after dyno type testing to validate their claims? It seems most people fitting after-market performance 'upgrades' only appear to make vague assurences of performce improvements after fitting the product in place of something that may have been worn or life expired and therefore offering questionable performance as compared to whizz-bang brand new carbs with no worn throttle spindles and inappropriate needle/worn piston spring etc. :-/ I don't want to sound negative- I'd love to see some decent evidence to prove all that outlay would be money very well spent  :)
  20. GT6 mk2 25/65 65/25 50 degree overlap Duration 270 lift .261 TT RF83  37/63 74/28 65 degree overlap Duration 280 lift .288 My cam on a 2 CD carb install, whilst not ideally suited to the Triumph given that the profile originates from ford, it was routinely recommended by some folks whose opinions i valued greatly, as they had far more experiance than me.
  21. Engineered out these issues? If the firing order doesn't suit triple carbs, a decent manifold balance pipe will only improve it to a certain extent.
