Pistons above the top of the block

I have seen a short engine that has a TR6 engine number stamped on it, but at top dead centre the pistons are above the block by about 30thou. I have been informed by a  local engine builder that some Triumph six cylinders were supposed to be like this. I find that hard to beleive as surely they will hit the head, and the engine in question has got shiny aluminium patches on the pistons where they have been in contact with the head. Can anyone shed some light on this?
Thanks.

Sounds like some over exuberant machine shop has milled the deck a tad too much. Someone may also have substituted some nearly correct connecting rods or incorrect compression height pistons. It is amazing what lengths a person will go to do things incorrectly. This is an amazingly tough engine tho and probably can continue a long useful life with the correct parts.
