  1. About four weeks ago I changed the oil the correct amount came out and the correct amount whent back in. There was some swarf on the drain plug ! The box is from a spit 1500 so I presume it's a single rail. I do know it's a "j type" overdrive Not sure if it's worth doing myself or wether to just get a re con one,I could balls it up and be worse off
  2. My gearbox has been making a reasonable whine on overun and a slight whine in gears 1,2 and 3 when driving I have not driven the car for a week whilst sorting out the insurance. Today i have just popped to the shops and the box is now whineing quite badly in gears 1,2and 3 a new sound which sounds like something catching has appeared as well. The new sound is only in 1,2and 3 as soon as 4th in engaged i can not get the sound to appear. The release bearing does have a moan ocasionally when the clutch pedal is depressed but when the pedal is raised a tiny bit it stops the noise Due to the whine in 1,2and 3 and am thinking its the layshaft bearings are now shot to bits ! so is gearbox out -----then what i have never taken a box apart, so whats the score do i just get a new box or is there something i can do myself when the box comes out i will check the release bearing the clutch was new ish when i bought the engine and box the seller told me and i have no reason to not belive him he said the clutch had only done about 500 miles as the box had sat in a shed for a few months its quite possable that the bearing may have got a stiff the box has been in my car for a couple of years now and its been fine who does recon 1500 overdrive gearboxes ? is it easy to get the overdrive off the box ? with the box out how do you check the bearing inside ? i'll take the car down to the plough tomorrow night and anyone there can have a drive and see what they think !!!

Complete engine change on Gertie up to a 2.5 and sort out that confounded vibration over 70mph.  :-/ The engine swap also needs to be fitted in inbetween the Santa Special rally on Dec 18th and the Essex rally on Jan 15th.   ;D Let me know when you are doing it and if I can I'll pop over and help out, would have to be a Friday or Saturday !
  5. I'll start this thread just in case there is anyone else looking for a drive as well as me ! So here goes ! Anyone looking for a co driver ? I don't trust my car to do the event in its present condition (1500 herald)so as a result I am looking for a drive. I don't care if I am a second, third or forth member ! I am local to the plough(cheshunt)and my vital stasticstics are :- I'm 45 and i work as a night driver, so I'm happy to all the night bits. Obvously I will pay my way ! Don't what else to say, so let me know ! If there is more than one offer I will look at all offers(not wanting to sound picky) Dave
  6. I popped along to watch for a while,it was nothing like bovington. Speeds were a damm sight slower but you need to have a decent level of car control, mud does not have the grip of concrete ! Looked like good fun,I might have to have a go next time
  7. Typical, I have booked the night of work so I could go along and watch Can anyone confirm if it's on or not ?

  10. I had a fantasic day for a number of reasons it's great to put faces to names on here.It did surprise me how many "mini" group competitions took place, I lost count of how many people came up and asked "what was his time" then you got the odd "boll#*s" after I told them ! I was very very surprised what a difference it made by starting the cars with their wheel on the first line at the start instead of having the wheels just somewhere in the box. First line stageing, your time starts when you cross the second line,it gives you a rolling start ! People, take note for next year it does make a difference ! The autojumble worked fine for me, I came away with two door bottom repair panels,an overflow bottle for the wifes car and a heatsheild. As for outgoing I got rid of,a wheel for richard a sack of crisps and a packet of hob nobs for Clive and some cash for mike. Good idea for a porta loo I did not drink anything until mid afternoon working on the theory "Nothing in = nothing out" even just a tent and a buckett, scrub that not fair on the girls. Order a porta loo ! Next year--- do I take part, I would love to say yes but I must admit I do also realy like doing the timing thing, the joy of giving someone a peice of paper and seeing their face light up ----or to see them reach for the gun in the glove box is irreplaceable I had one or two of "no I didn't "when given a wrong test but this year as I had a radio I could hear the call so I could explain which gate had been done wrong Roll on next year !!!!! Sorry to waffle on a bit !
