  1. Ok cheers Rob, will let dirk know, Best to plan it and modify it now, what cables did you use? Mk2/3 1500? Cheers again Shaun
  2. fitted the door skin to one of the doors. bit of tweaking here and there to get it to fit good.. just need to finish welding up some of the bottom edge now. then will start on other side, we had to get a 1500 style door panel as no one has at moment, mk2 or 3 panels! cheers shaun
  3. hi Rob, why is that neccessary? cheers shaun
  4. stripped one of the doors, didnt look too bad from the outside, but under all the filler!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  5. rear panel on today, bumper support reinforcing plates also fitted, and lots and lots of grinding and smoothing. cheers shaun
  6. this is the hole puch pliers that i use for the plug holes. you cant quite see on the picture, but i have swaged the edge of the steel with the other side of the pliers, its for lap joint welding, sorry it does not show up so good on the picture. cheers shaun
  7. Ahhh, Good news about the panels Dirk, As for the colour, yes I also think it looks nice darker! Cheers Shaun
  8. Hi Jason, Unfortunately I don't have a spot welder, always wanted one! I plug weld them. Make a hole in the panel then fill it with weld. I have a pair of pliers that punch the holes, so much easier than trying to drill all those little holes, and no panel distortion from using a drill. I will take a picture so you can see them. Then position the panel, clamp, make adjustments, and weld! Good tip, have lots of clamps! Cheers Shaun
  9. bobyspit wrote:Shaun, the beers were great thanks mate! Rob Nice one, I will bring you some stronger ones next time! Or when I (one day) do the 10 cr will bring some with me! Mmmmmmm Belgium beer! :P Cheers Shaun
  10. took off rear panel, and have to cut out all the rotten parts. where the bumper mounts are, they are crusty so need repairing, also the middle of the boot floor (edge) is messed up so i will place a new section in there. the reinforcing brackets for the bumper mounts are also crusty and rotten, so i had to make some new ones! what is the big hole for about 25mmdiameter, In the back verticle edge of the boot floor? (i did not strip the car) can you remember Dirk?  :) look down just from the spare wheel mount. is it for drainage or a cable etc??? cheers shaun
  11. so, sill and rear wing on.
  12. and the rot just in one side. i dont think the mk3 will be this good! cheers shaun
  13. molsmagic, i took some pictures of the diff/boot panel, luckily there is very little rust, just one small hole at one side, so i will need to repair that. What looks like rust at the seam, is just where the sealer is, I removed the sealer and it's solid. how bad are yours? cheers shaun
  14. hi beans, thanks for that, but i have also seen your work, great looking car. mikey, i started welding when i was about 15,(nearly 25 years ago) then also owning many many rusty old cars, as i could only afford crappy ones, you end up learning to weld, to get them through the mot. i find the secret is to get good preperation, weld to good metal, dont try to weld rust, it does not look good and is weak, take time make it good solid metal, then the welds are great. my insiration to do work like this is because of the one person i look up to, he is a perfectionist in his work, he is my best mate and my hero. my dad. (ok guys dont cry) cheers shaun
  15. Well, the sills are now done, I also fitted the rear wing, and the front sill edge infill panel, Need to finish off grinding and smoothing. The rear wing was a bit of a nightmare, needed tweaking and sorting, but I got it done in the end, then I clopped my head, and had a huge headache come on, so came in for a couple of hours lay down, don't panic all, I'm ok now.  :) So tomorrow I will take pictures, and I start on the rear panel, and boot floor. Cheers Shaun
  16. its amazing how much remidial work the so called "heritage original"panels need to fit correct. i spent ages modifying and re shaping the front edge of the outer sill to get it to fit correct. and the rear wing leading edge at the door will also need some work, as the gaps are not excellent, and the wing fits good at inner arch and rear edge, so its not that at fault. the door is fully forward also. (oh the joy of old spitfires) cheers shaun
  17. and finally for now. i also fitted the outer sill, and dressed the edges, whilst the door was fitted to make good the gaps, (as best as can be done)spitfire doors and wings seem to have a different shape.
  18. time to cut out the rot, clean it up and weld in a new piece. then make up a new piece for the outside, i used 2 mm steel for strength, also you will see i modified the possition of the drainage holes, made them lower so they let out more water, as thats why they were rotten, due to the water sitting in the lower corner.
  19. a little crusty on the reverse side, also on the chassis main rail
  20. i repaired the front chassis, where it was rotten first picture shows the chassis cleaned, then the bad area cut out
  21. My sides hurt from laughing, the misses is looking at me strange!   ;D Thanks for that, I'm going to look for silver overalls now! Cheers Shaun
  22. Cheers for that Rob, did you enjoy the beer? I enjoy Welding and making it look good, I can't wait to get stuck into the mk3 after this! Cheers Shaun
