  1. It is highly likely that you will need a different number of spacers on either side. When I took my body off there was about an inch worth of difference. Came out of the factory like that. Pretty normal I believe.

  3. I always used to wish I had a cv instead of a saloon - but over the years the saloons have grown on me more and more. I agree with Gary - it certainly helps to justify spending when you see the prices increasing, but have to say £13k does seem very steep. I have seen some lovely saloons go for £5k and £5.5k recently and I think that figure is probably a bit of a barrier.
  4. Its a job I've been putting off for far too long - I know what a P.I.T.A it can be  ??)
  5. OK thanks Gary- yes rolling chassis at the moment so you've made me feel better about that thanks. New exhaust from Canleys arrived today so I'll put that on over the weekend hopefully and then its time to trial fit the body!!
  6. Replaced both my dampers at the same time. New trunnions too. Same on both sides - both bump stops are being crushed.
  7. I have the exact same problem but hoping that when the body goes back on the weight of the body will push down on the suspension and help to raise the lever arm off the bump stop, My bump stops are fitted but are getting crushed by the lever arms. Having said that, I'm not too hopeful as three of us have stood on the rear spring and that didn't make any difference! :((
  8. I am in Birchwood!! About 5 miles away, though my Vitesse is in Prescot but about to be moved to Birchwood. I'll send a PM.
  9. Are you in Burtonwood? The Burtonwood between St Helens and Warrington?
  10. Oh dear - this is becoming a competition. Got my Vitesse in 1981 aged 15. I'm now 48 and I've never had it on the road. Closer now than I have ever been though. Still a year off though I think.
  11. My advice would be to get the restoration done as quickly as possible, for two reasons. The longer it goes on the more likely you will be to misplace parts The longer it goes on the more likely you are to lose heart.
  12. I ended up taking the clutch plate off and tried it on the shaft to make sure it was the right one. It was so tight at first that I thought it was wrong. Tried a bit of emery cloth on the splines and it seemed better. Put it back together and went in first time. Tightening up bell housing nuts and one fell inside the bell housing. So all off again and then back on. Then realised the oil filter on the end of the adaptor was baulking on top of the chassis and holding the overdrive mounting off the chassis. So, undo engine mountings, jack up engine engine again, move filter so its not baulking, then tighten engine mountings again. Propshaft won't quite marry up with diff so need to move engine and gearbox forward about 1/16th of an inch. All good fun, NOT.
  13. I am having exactly the same problem with my Vitesse. Have jacked up the rear of the engine and have spent far too long getting it to "slide in" I ran out of swear words last weekend but have learnt a few more this week ready for tomorrow. It came off so easy! Cant believe what I thought would be a simple 10 minute job can waste so much time. And it gets flipping' heavy very quickly, especially with the overdrive unit on the end. Oh well, fingers crossed for this weekend.
  14. I am about to purchase a stainless steel exhaust system for a Mk2 Vitesse. Does anyone have any idea if one particular supplier offers better grade stainless steel than the others - or are they all produced by the same supplier? I'm pretty sure there is 'good' stainless steel and 'not so good' Thanks. Dave.
  15. Can anyone explain the reason for the sliding bit at the end of the propshaft on my Vitesse please? Is it to give a bit of adjustment on where the engine and gearbox sits?
  16. Or you can cold galvanise like I did. Got the chassis back to bare metal then two brush coats of galvafroid paint before putting final colour on. It's not cheap though!!
  17. Thanks Pete. Not striped and I put the longer ones elsewhere to avoid tempting fate. Any idea where the 4 longer ones are supposed to go, or should they all be the same length. I noticed to the two holes below the oil filter housing are longer and put two of them in there for now. The gasket sealant was going off so wanted got get the sump on and worry about the longer ones after.
  18. Someone else has suggested that, but I don't think I have the courage to risk it!!
  19. Having taken my sump off for a clean up while the engine is out I came to refit it today. 4 of the setscrews are slightly longer than the other 19. Is this correct? Both canley and Rimmers site shows 23 all the same length. So, perhaps a previous owner lost 4 and replaced them with slightly longer ones? By the way, the threads on the alloy insert are fine so that's a relief.
  20. Front core plug is a bit of a pig isn't it? Timing sprockets and end plate off!!! To be fair, was going to replace the timing chain and sprockets anyway along with the oil seal. Hope I can change the sprockets without upsetting the timing. Any tips anybody?
  21. OK thanks - doesn't sound too difficult and definitely worth doing properly before engine goes back in.
  22. I eventually made a start on the core plugs at the weekend and took the four out that run under the manifolds. Was amazed at the amount of clogged up rust/silt that was sat behind them. The drain plug will unscrew quite easily - so what's best - power jet through each hole until its running freely out of the drain plug?
  23. That sounds on the high side to me. I had 4 shot blasted and primed for £40.
