Is there a way of setting timing without light as not got one. info says it will run after fitting and maybe a couple of degrees out. can I adjust be ear at idle, until it has highest rpm and smooth running by advancing/redarding dizzy. Any advice much appriciated. Cheers Dave

  3. Hi. i bought a soft fabric cover from Classic Addition (£170 inc postage). Very good cust service. The cover has been on the car pretty much constantly. It has just gone through its second winter. It has never leaked. Some condensation issues mainly winter, though using lengths of the foam pipe lagging for 22mm copper has helped a lot. I used 3 lengths front to back on roof that extended about 8" over roof length front and rear and 2 on bonnet. This stops the fabric lying flat and alowws air flow. Cheers Dave

  5. Hi. All of above is good. I have also filed rounded hex fastenings flat on 2 sides to get open ended/heavy duty adjustable spanners and this has worked well. Dave
  6. thanks a lot for your advice. Will try brute force then. Was trying to preserve bearing as seems good and new ones are apparently dodgy Cheers Dave
  7. Hi everyone. I have a Mk 1, 2 litre Vitesse, fitted with a J Type Overdrive (possible Dolomite g/b shafts) I have stripped the g/b, except for the main shaft. I have no special tools so have tried the "Haynes" method, which is to remove the circlip which holds the bearing to the main shaft and also the large round clip which holds the bearing to the casing and then to tap the rear of main-shaft to push the m/s through the inner race into the g/b. This is just pushing the the bearing out of the casing. I have put the large clip back on and tried again (using a dead blow hammer with a soft face). It is not moving and I don't want to use too much force on the inner race, as will probably re use bearing as not old. Would heating the bearing using a decorators hot air gun help?, or any other tips as always much appreciated. Cheers Dave
  8. Thanks a lot for the advice about where on bearing to drift. The layshaft is out and the lay cluster has dropped to bottom of g/b. Not sure if can do the slide hammer, as is a an overdrive box and also o/d has been removed, though can refit.   Cheers Dave
  9. Hi everybody. I have researched this a lot and some people have done it, but i can't. Any tips on removing imput/main shaft bearings from gearbox casing. I have heated the casing with hot air gun until water bubbles on it, and also tried putting it in gas oven on medium heat (door would not close quite also) and then given imput shaft end (front) of gear box a few whacks with dead blow hammer). Also made some soft metal drifts (15mm copper pipe hammered flat at end) and tried drifting out (alternating 3 o'clock/9 o'clock taps), though obviously these drift pipes are quite light. Have thought of melting some lead and filling these to give more weight. clutching at straws as no other soft metal drifts. Is heating casing worth while, as not sure what metal casing is made of and if it will expand more than bearings?. Any detailed tips and advice regarding tools and technique on this this much appreciated as can't afford to pay someone and also love sussing it out myself. Thanks Dave
  10. Thanks for getting back to me. I have removed the remote. There is no obvious looseness, play or damage in linkage, though I have not dismantled it. Do I need to?. Also is there anything likely to cause this noise in the selectors under the top cover as I have not removed this. Cheers Dave
  11. Hi everyone. Have a mk1 Vitesse i bought 18 months ago. the gearbox was very quite. The overdrive was sticking though on and I may have reversed like this (have fixed overdrive problem and this does not seem damaged) but there is a whizzy sounding rattle in reverse (louder) and first gear. Would this be a shaft bearing (it sounds like it may not be in the depths of gearbox) or is there anything else it may be before I may strip it down. Also, wondering if to leave it for a bit as do low miles and if noise gets worse then do work. Any of your wisdom as always much appreciated. Cheers Dave
  12. Hi. Thinking I ought to drain and put new coolant in vitesse mk1 2ltre. The block tap won't turn by hand (expected). Would it do any harm to try pliers etc, and heat (any rubber seal in it?). Failing that I guess, I can try and remove the the unit from the block. Also wondering if above not a goer, then could I remove top/bottom hose and start from cold for a bit and water pump would empty coolant from engine. Any replies would be great. Cheers Dave
  13. Thanks stu for replying. If you have a spare, lighter one for sale that would be great. Also I have noticed that the spring is stretched towards one end. do you know if this would matter?. cheers Dave
  14. Thanks a lot for that info Pete, Will have to hunt for a second lighter one. Cheers Dave
  15. Hi everyone. I have bought a secondhand pair of stromberg 150 cd's to rebuild for my vitesse. they have different diamphram securing plates (round with 4 securing screw holes). One is more chunkier (weighs 70g) than the other (15g). Photographs on gt6/vitesse factory manuel show the 2 diffrent ones on the stripping/rebuild section (not as different parts). My question is. Can I use these together as I assume they won't open and close at the same rate and also why are they different. Any help much appriciated. Dave.
  16. Thanks a lot for all your replies. Cheers Dave
  17. Hi everyone. I changed the brake fluid recently on M1 2litre Viteese. Shortly after the brake master cylinder failed. I have rebuilt it. To now remove the air from top of system can I bleed 1/2 brakes, peferably the front or will the whole system have to be bled. Any advice much appricated. Cheers Dave
