  1. To generate green hydrogen you need a lot of power for electrolysis that has to be generated... greenly... Once you have created it you have to store and then ship to where it is needed, again greenly... Might as well just pump the power straight into a house at this point...
  2. There are aftermarket mechanical i.e. bi-metallic switches you can fit to any electric fan. They come in a range of temperatures (on and off temps) and are usually shaped like a pencil, maybe 2-3 inches long. I did it on my Porsche 924. The official temperature switch was Porsche-Price so I got the switch for likely 5 of my favorite currency back in the day. Wired the fan up and stuck it as close to the return i.e. coming from the motor aka hot hose as I could in the radiator. Worked a charm!
  3. I have said elsewhere on the interwebs (but I don't think here) that I find their prices a bit on the high side. Unless they are including something like 10 years of free electricity! I know they use a lot of Tesla tech (from the show Vintage Voltage ) which has its pros and cons. The guy 5 miles down the road converted his '74 MKIV Spitfire for around 20k€. It can get up to 100 miles on a charge (though 80-90 is more realistic). It weighs the same as before, weight distribution is about the same (mild understeer on slippery surfaces) charges in under 2 hours if completely empty from an 11 KW charger (what most chargers are). He has to limit the speed and torque so it doesn't shred his 3-rail gearbox and 3.89 diff! His conversion came about because his 1300 engine gave up the ghost after nearly 100k Miles on it and he needed a whole new engine (it blew a piston ruining the case and the head). So he kind of rushed things and he would do things differently to get better range if he did it again. Before he drove it maybe 400 to 500 miles a year. He his put over 15k miles on it since the conversion in in March 2020. He drove it to Greece and back... My 6th sense tells me that Electric Classic Cars is just too busy so they are pricing people out to avoid taking on work they know they can't get to...
  4. Might have to see if I can get it sent here for less than 20 GBP... 🙂
  5. I liked that video. They correctly point out that the main problem is energy and how that generated and that human behavior plays a major role as well. For example out Renault tells you all kinds of stats from its onboard computer and I routinely get better mileage and lower emissions than my wife even though I drive a but more "sportingly" (she says aggressively) I would like to see more about the tire wear comment. I have seen and read studies that have both confirmed and or debunked that. Things like the fact that an electric car hardly uses any braking and usually has no clutch offsets the added wear and tear or that there are special tire compounds that don't wear as much etc. etc. etc. No single technology is the perfect answer but many are better than what came before. I often point out people that you can usually reduce your impact by 10-20% without really changing your lifestyle. From regular maintenance to adjusting systems (i.e. heating, lighting, cooking, driving) to a more efficient method. IMHO the problem is that people don't take the time to understand how things work. If they had a better understanding of how it works they would understand the impact of changing anything. The company that installed my furnace got very stroppy because I wanted to know exactly how the whole thing worked... Now I use about as much energy as the other houses in the street although we are home more and there are 4 of us and the other houses only have 2 people...
  6. Here are some ideas I have had in the past: 1. Work with local farmers to promote local produce: Transport causes CO2.... 2. Run a "bring your broken device" event where people can bring their toasters, etc. and have them fixed. Electronic waste (and waste in general) has a not-insignificant impact 3. Run a "get your car greener" event where you teach people the simple things they can do to make their cars run greener e.g. ensure tire pressure is up (or slightly above), regular oil checks and topping up, learn to shift at low revs and not let the car idle unnecessarily 4. Set up an online community to share things like lawn mowers and other equipment. Reduces waste as well.. 5. Set up seminars about renewable energy. 6. Get several kegs of beer and kilos of beans and mack a renewable methane-powered engine... Ok... maybe not they last one. 😄

    Electric TR7?

The guy down the road that did a MKIV Spitfire did it for around 20k€. Since then I have done a lot of research and I think it could be done for cheaper and would go farther. The big problem is the German MOT: TÜV.... they HATE non-standard parts If you want to have a chat about it privately let me know...
  8. For some reason I thought the hubs were "handed" but I realize that is a stupid assumption.. 🙂
  9. My son was excited about going to a climbing park but came home saying the class can't go because not everyone can afford the 23€. Now I know that 23€ can indeed be an issue for some families particularly as one in ten families has lost at least one source of income in this area and honestly, if this had been known to be an issue there are organizations to help out such kids. Having been a child who was eligible to get free food at school and wearing only hand-me-down clothes for years I know of the stigma of poverty. But at the same time I also see that a lot of those families have members who smoke (8-9€ a packet here in Germany), have tattoos (start at 150€ because of the health insurance requirements) and I often see them with an energy drink waiting to pick up or having just dropped off the kids. The point is here that what something is "worth" is all down to decisions made. When it comes to our cars, yes, they are a hobby and yes it is getting more expensive but as someone else said cars in general are getting more expensive. What if you stopped paying for cable TV for a few months? Maybe change your mobile plan? Cut down on things like alcohol and tobacco? I was self-employed for 3 years and my "treat" was getting a take out Döner kebab once a month. I often went days without a warm meal... Also, most of these parts are not consumables. Heck, high-quality parts may even outlast the rest of the car (or the life of the owner....?) You can only vote with your wallet and it is high time we start...
  10. I have since seen the badge pop up a great deal on US Spitfires... guess it wasn't such a big deal after all!! 😭😢😥
  11. This is probably common knowledge but while rewatchintg John Clancy's DVD "The Triumph Stabnard Stroy" I noticed in the ad with the real Spitfire the 1500 has a badge and not a sticker. See attached. It is roughly the same as the MKIV badge bot my guess is longer as the Spitfire part looks the same bot 1500 is of course longer than MKIV. I couldn't see it on the side or back like on the MKIV in the video but it all goes by quickly... Perhaps interesting....?
  12. Well in Dec of 2020 I had some parts sent to me and DPD claimed they couldn't be delivered. Something about "incomplete address"... By doing a few online tricks I found out they had asked the seller for a new address but she was away. (she had given me a different number than I had received through the intermediary selling site...) So I tried writing messages, emails and calling any number I could find.. Nothing... Finally I resorted to something I can count on one hand I have done in my life: Shaming I went to their Twitter and facebook accounts as them where my stuff was. The immediately asked me to private message them and it arrived in two days. (should have been one day but they claimed I wasn't around which was utter bull$hit as I was working from home). I asked repeatedly for an explanation and never got one. Looks like you might have to shame again...
  13. To avoid this thread going into a spiral for Brexit nonsense I reckon people should google about what the deals do and do not include... 🙂 Personally I liked cinemas and other things limiting the number of people going in. Germans, in general are horribly habitual. My Mom knew it was 10 am on Saturday because the neighbor was washing his car (technically not allowed...), it was 10:30 because he was trimming the lawn and 11 because his wife was cleaning the window sills... Back when we were in the office people complained about long lines at lunch... whereby "lunch" was only from 12:00 to 12:30 .... if you went just before 1 PM and you could sail through... Same with traffic jams. If we left the house at 8:20 we got to work in less than 10 minutes. If we left around 8:30 we would get stuck in at least a 20-30 minute traffic jam. We basically left it to 9:15 or later and sailed through... Same thing at the various outdoor pools and swimming holes... I liked having more space. I am not anti-social. Germans are though! 😄 🙂 After the initial drought paper products we have not had wont for anything since say May of 2020...
  14. Thanks! The most problems I had heard of was randomness in what does and doesn't get caught up in customs. Two guys literally ordered the same part on the same day and one had to pay extra and the other didn't! Seems to me the ones who have benefited the most have been the couriers as they are charging anywhere from 5 to 50 of your local currency per shipment even if things are "tariff free". At least this might take a little bit of the randomness out of it... I had heard however that some industries were getting extended grace periods (mostly in the food industry) until October as Brexit PLUS Covid was just too much to bear... One Spitfire driver's wife works at customs here and she basically said there are so many probs on this end what with staffing, illness etc that they are waving things through... There was a special on the BBC (I get FreeSAT as I am far enough West and have a large enough.... dish...) about Brexit and how things are going. They highlighted all the great new trade some companies were doing (mostly fish and food) because the EU was being very annoying with paperwork. The only thing I found slightly odd is they had begun trading with countries with which the UK had no special agreement (at the time of filming) so they had to meet the same rules as were in place when the UK was within the EU. That has changed though to be honest. I had read about a new Canadian, Australian and US accord not too long ago. No worries though, once Blue Lightning is back on the road in 2-3 years' time I will darken Her Majesty's shores with my American drawl!
  15. Fight whine with wine... of course not while driving.. 🙂
  16. So having taken out my fourth Spitfire window I finally figured out how to do it without breaking or losing any parts!
  17. We'll get there in the end. 🙂
  18. A great idea but I am always a little leery of sites that don't provide a physical address for the head company .....
  19. About to tackle the doors on my 1500 "Bitter Lemon".... so far everything I thought would be hard (exhaust, radiator etc) has been easy and everything I thought would be easier (heater hoses and connections) have been hard!
  20. Dash fascia off "Bitter Lemon"... taking exhaust off as the local skip is open today and they take metal...
