JOHN LEARMONTH Posted September 8, 2006 Posted September 8, 2006 Hican anyone advise me before i start on the complexity of stripping the carbs and refurbing them ? i noticed today while driving to work that the idle speed seems to be running very high about 1000 rpm and the car is pulling slightly when running at a constant speed.just been out to the car in my lunchbreak started it up fine idle speed is about 700 seemed fine (scratches head)put the bonnet down and noticed a smell of petrol and found the right hand carb was pouring petrol out all over the hot engine not a great ideaseems to be coming out of the small pipe at the top and the uppermost gasket, if that makes sensei should of said that its on the original strom`sthanksJohn
Richard B Posted September 8, 2006 Posted September 8, 2006 Whilst I have'nt done Stag carbs, I have rebuilt Strombergs before. They are fiddly, but it is a DIY job. Personally I would say get the kit from Burlen Fuel Services. They bought the rights to the Stromberg carburettors from Zenith and can supply everything.Apologises to any other trader who is better, cheaper, more knowledgable.........
wakaday Posted September 8, 2006 Posted September 8, 2006 Good excuse to throw some money at it and go for a four Barrel conversion.
Richard B Posted September 9, 2006 Posted September 9, 2006 Do you get any more power/economy out of the 4 barrel conversion?
jrp3168 Posted September 9, 2006 Posted September 9, 2006 Apparently so but its expensive, take a look at thishttp://www.monarch-stags.co.uk/index.htmlI've heard the 4 barrel realy comes into its own until youreplace that horrible exhaust manifold with one thatcan breath (i.e. tubular pipes).I'm still saving my pennies.John
JOHN LEARMONTH Posted September 10, 2006 Author Posted September 10, 2006 Well not going for the conversion too many pennieshave a split diaphram and quite a bit of dirt in the carbsnot sure how it got there as i have a petrol filter fittedanyhow have a kitchen full of bits and no idea how to put it back togetherjust working slowly through the manualwill let u know how i get onjohn
JOHN LEARMONTH Posted September 13, 2006 Author Posted September 13, 2006 Quick updategot it all back together but was struggling to balance themso i reluctantly gave in and decided to give it to my local dealer vermont classics what a waste of time the car has come back in a worse state than i gave it to them still not balanced one come in before the other and for some unexplainable reason they have altered the kick down cable to the gearbox which now makes the car almost undrivablei wish i hadnt bothered £60 down the drainif anybody is thinking of using these people my advice is DONTam giving another guy i met at the otley calssics show on sunday a go will let u know how i get on
jrp3168 Posted September 15, 2006 Posted September 15, 2006 While on the subject does anyone know if its possible to balancethe carbs using vacum gauges.I noticed there are some breather pipes just near the carbs, I mightgive it a try if I can find my bike gauges.John
wakaday Posted September 15, 2006 Posted September 15, 2006 I bet a four barrel is winking at you now. lol.
jrp3168 Posted September 17, 2006 Posted September 17, 2006 yup I'm very tempted.I've got a brand new Edelbrock lying around which I wasgoing to fit to my Scimitar.I might whip the manifold off this winter and see how easy it isto knock up a mount for it at work, I can then save my penniesfor some tubular exhaust headers.John
wakaday Posted September 19, 2006 Posted September 19, 2006 I fitted an Edelweiss/Edelbrock carb to my TR7V8 after fiddling around with a Holley. All I can say is, Wow.The difference to the car was superb. This was after it originally ran SU's with K&N filters and the correct jets so it ran very well before. The amount of low down grunt in a high gear was brilliant. It would pull away in second gear like it was first and this was with a 3.08 axle fitted as well. How I miss that car and the new owner keeps telling me how wonderful it is which doesn't help.
JOHN LEARMONTH Posted September 20, 2006 Author Posted September 20, 2006 Excuse my lack of knoledge but has anyone got a pic of a edlebrock ?mine is running as sweet as a sweet thing in sweet land with a sugary tooth complaintafter i found someone who knew what they were doingwow what a difference its like a different car and has never run so good
jrp3168 Posted September 21, 2006 Posted September 21, 2006 JohnTake a look athttp://www.edelbrock.com/automotive_new/mc/carbs_acc/carbs_access_main.shtmlYou can get the carbs for just over 200 quidhttp://www.v8tuner.co.uk/product.php?id=102The tricky part is mounting it on the inlet manifold.RegardsJohn
