fishtank24
Hello have recently acquired a 1300 which is chewing starter pinions. ( not pre engaged) I suspect previous owner changed ring gear. Pinion has nine teeth. How many teeth should the ring gear have? Thanks in anticipation Gerry
Nick Jones
1300FWD or RWD? If RWD it’s possible the engine is actually a 1500 (or has a 1500 flywheel) which is different and requires a pre-engaged starter. If FWD, you need to take a really close look at the ring gear on the front of the engine and it’s mountings to the front pulley and check it’s running straight and true without excessive flex. fishtank24
Thank you Nick will check alignment as FWD
Nick Jones
It's been several decades since I owned a 1300FWD but IIRC the ring gear frame is attached to the crank pulley via rubber bushes and if they aren't right all sorts of strange and unhelpful things happen. Also make sure the chamfer on the ring gear is pointed the right way to assist the gears meshing, bearing in that the gear moves back towards the starter motor as it engages so the chamfer needs to point forward. Also the FWD starter motor runs in the opposite direction to most..... Nick
