    Oil filter

Cheers all, I can now have the pleasure of going back to the local motor factors and tell them what the cross-reference is  ;D
  2. Andy, what about the Isle of Wight next May ? Mr and Mrs Grayfox come on down !
  3. The cap and leads did the business after all then ? Did you find out what was causing the misfire ? (if it's an embarrassing mistake on your part, don't deny us a laugh  ;))
  4. Seconding Pete's sentiment, a brilliant weekend. In no particular order, thanks to Club Triumph, Derek Pollack, the organising team, all the marshalls, my co-driver, all the other teams, our sponsors, octane, Lambrini, Toyo, Mintex, Spax (for the squeaky b#####d rear shock that never shut up the whole run), Osram, Tangfastic, Lucozade, the weather, the Triumph motor company, bacon and eggs, Tomtom, HTC, Maglite, biscuits, cake, and my good lady for her support and the cold beers waiting for us when we got home. We couldn't have done it without you  ;)

    Oil filter

Alex's RBRR prep alerted me to the apparent lack of availability of oil filters 'on the shelf' locally. Looked on the 'net and there are a few different makes available. Is there a preferred make/supplier ? We've been using Halfords filters up to now but they are now obsolete and our local store couldn't tell me what the cross-reference was.
  6. Tough one really as there were so many good bits but I guess Wales generally with a spell behind Andy Martin's TR4 in particular. Fantastic !
  7. I've just been adding up our fuel receipts. Looks like we used about 280 litres and did 2260 miles (including to and from the Plough). So about 36mpg or there abouts. I'm really pleased with that. Let's not be vulgar and mention the cost though (apart from two fill-ups with super unleaded at 153.9 pence per litre !!!!!)
  8. I thought all the stops were very well run. A big thank you and well done to all the marshalls, you really helped make this such a success. I second the comments about the marshalls sticking to the timings. It seemed to make the whole thing hang together much better for me. I too wasn't aware of the double booking at Sixpenny Handley, excellent marshalling at a busy stop.  ;)
  9. xyv wrote:ooh, look, there's Carl!     ;D Yep, but not drinking Lambrini. Handed mine over at the border as instructed by 'Mr Big'. Good suggestions for alternative uses. No use as 'fuel additive' I suspect, it's probably an octane reducer. Perhaps an Acclaim could run on it ...
  10. Only 31 bottles ? Where did the others go ? Does this mean there are Lambrini drinkers in our midst ? Come out, come out, who ever you are  ;D ;D ;D ;D
  11. Nick_Jones wrote: Sounds like breather or over-fill issue to me Mike.  Otherwise it would leak when cold as well...... Good luck with your investigations..... Nick Seconded, there was a service note about this back in the day. I'd say do a drain and re-fill making sure that it's possibly even a little bit short. then try another long run. Hope you get it sorted anyway  ;)
  12. Replacement axle is in and brakes bled this afternoon. New VC went on yesterday and I put a fresh bead of sealant around the top of the windscreen. Spare electric pump is fitted with the correct connectors and ready to go in. Might leave it at that as it's only a 5 minute job to swap it out and the one on the car hasn't given any more trouble. Now it's on to the rest of the ordinary servicing and checks that I haven't already done while fixing other things. Road test tonight to check that the axle is OK (fingers-crossed !) and headlamp aim correct. Spares and tools on the list I sent to Rob are already in the boot. Last thing will be a quick wash, Rainex the windows and fit the stickers.
  13. Yep. I want to see Alex and James make it round. Spoke to Alex yesterday and they were still wrestling with the oil flow problems. Come on lads, you can do it ! Apart from that, I want to get round and I want to see everyone else get round too. Strength and honour  ;)
  14. The old fan is off. Turns out one of the bolts had fallen out too. I'd forgotten that I had to use a 3 bolt Dolly 1850 fan when I built the car so I'm on the look out for a decent Sprint 4-bolt fan to mount the new VC to. I've only got one in stock and there's a bit of play in the bearing. It's not serious but I'd rather fit a better one if I can find one in time. The replacement axle is stripped and ready to accept all the bits 'n' bobs from the one on the car. I was hoping to get away with just swapping the brakes over but this axle had 3/8ths wheel studs and the hub flanges looked a bit butchered (sealed with black mastic ?!?!) so I'm swapping the half-shaft/hub assemblies over too because they have the larger 7/16ths studs. Should have the axle stripped off the car tonight. I'm going to fit my spare electric fuel pump and keep a mechanical pump as a spare (unless I suddenly feel flush enough to buy another spare electric pump). Banzai !
  15. Oh, forgot about the electric fuel pump that now needs a whack to get it started sometimes. New pump too then !
  16. I decided to take the Sprint to the driver's meeting which turned out to be a good move. Windscreen needs resealing, viscous coupling died on the way home (managed to limp back), and the axle that I was going to live with is now just too loud a certain speeds so looks like I'm going to change it. Oh well ... On the plus side the car is running better than ever  8)
  17. ;D ;D ;D Well Mike, I'd definitely have to upgrade part of the loom to do that so a job for another day. The hard work is done though. For now I'm using Osram Nightbreakers throughout. These, and the new head lamps, have resulted in a big improvement in illumination (bearing in mind that I had standard halogens already). Judging by other threads about fitting improved lighting I reckon it will be possible to follow the RBRR progress from space  ;D
  18. Thanks for all the replies. The lights are 2x 60W dip and 4x 55W main. I made up a box with two 40 amp relays and a small blade fuse box. I've provided a separate +ve feed from the battery for the dip and main circuits. Each runs through a 30 amp fuse to one of the relays. The return to the lights runs through a 15 amp fuse, one for each of the three light circuits (1 dip and 2 main). I've also used tell-tale fuses throughout to aid fault diagnosis. Everything works perfectly apart from a couple of connections that need tightening. So, just a final bit of tidying to do with the wiring then some adjustment of the head lamp beams and it's job done  ;)
  19. I've been meaning to re-wire the headlights on the Sprint for ages and finally got round to it today. I've used the existing supply from the column switches to power the relay coils (1 for dip, 1 for main) and run a new feed from the battery +ve through the relays and into the supply wiring for the dip and main circuits. I intend to fit some in-line fuses in the relay-to-headlamp part of the circuit. Is this the best place for them ? Fitted some nice, new headlamp bowls and extra bright halogen bulbs too.
  20. Cheers Paul, I've ordered some of the large bore valves and I'll have a look at moving the floats around this weekend. Since the current pump is supplying at more or less the right pressure the change to the larger bore valves may well cure the apparent fuel supply issue. I think a good 2000 mile road test is in order  ;)
  21. Hmm, red top looks interesting but info says not compatible with alcohol fuels. I wonder if this includes the E10 that will be inflicted on us. The Holley billet electric fuel pump is apparently compatible with such fuels but would be way overkill for my car (and would need a pressure regulator). Food for thought although ~£230 is a bit more than I was planning to spend  ;D
  22. Cheers for the replies chaps. Paul, it's definitely when accelerating hard but doesn't do it all the time which is why I'm guessing the pump is marginal. I'm assuming you're talking about the float valves. Where can I get the type you mention ? Interesting point about cornering. It might be worth re-positioning the float as you suggest anyway. Let me know what orientation works best and I'll give it a go.
  23. I've been using an electric fuel pump on the Sprint for a few years now (replacing the standard mechanical pump). It's made by FAI and supplies fuel at 2 - 3 psi, 90 litres per hour. Since changing over to 2" SU's, occasionally under really hard use the car has spluttered a bit leading me to suspect that the pump isn't supplying fuel fast enough. If I assumed my car gets down to about 5 mpg running flat out in top gear, ~120mph, that equates to about 24 gallons per hour which is higher than the pump output (90l/hr = ~19.8gal/hr). The fuel consumption is likely to be similar or higher in the intermediate gears too so it looks like I need a new pump. Does this sound right ? Anyway, I've been looking at other after-market pumps, particularly Facet. There seems to be two types, the 'cube' type and the 'cylindrical' type. Apart from price what are the relative merits of these ?
