  1. Firstly do NOT loosen of the heads. No need to. I would repair your water pump rather than go for a new one as there were a batch of faulty new water pumps on the market. Check out LD Parts website, good info and can supply the parts you need, may be worth giving the helpful Peter at LD Parts a call.

    Diff whine

Many moons ago someone mentioned Molyslip. If your diff is off the car I would put 2 or 3 tubes in working it round the gears by turning the flanges and nice new oil.

    Price of tyres

Hi Bruce On my daily I recently had to replace a 3 year old tyre due to cracking, I personally am more concerned with that than age up to a point. I would take a slightly older good quality tyre that has been stored out of the sun against a newer tyre  that's been made in the far east or eastern Europe. Just my personal choice.

    stag timing chains

Plenty of oil changes will prolong the life of the chains.
  6. I thought one time Rimmers were showing the chrome surround under the cruise light page as the same as the front UK indicator surround, they also sell the small red lens relatively cheap but don't sell the larger red lens on it's own(for obvious reasons) so you would need to keep a close eye on ebay.com to see if any of the large red lens come up for sale but I must stress look into it as I'm not 100% about the chrome surround. Sets do come up on ebay.com for reasonable money but be careful as shipping can be expensive and sometimes the seller puts a larger value on the parcel for insurance purposes but attracts customs wanting a cut.
  7. I agree with your theory but speaking as a stag owner from a recent experience I wished I had done the complete opposite, new bearing carrier made to the wrong size, release bearing wrong one supplied and the new clutch was not as good quality as my old one, hope your Herald/Vitesse parts suppliers offer better quality components. Just add reason for pulling apart was overdrive problems.
  8. I think they were made by a German company called Hardi, they are ok but tend to kick out a bit more pressure than the SU pump and caused a bit of fuel overflow at first on my stag. Mark

    Oil cooler

I wouldn't bother, money more useful in other areas.

    Clutch

The 'uprated' clutch from Paddocks seems to be the one to go for going by what the stag experts say. Mark

    rattly clutch

Tbh Bill this is probably the only time I would rather do it in a pit rather than a lift because there are some awkward nuts and bolts on top of the bellhousing that needs someone underneath (in the pit) with a long extension bar on the socket and up top someone holding the nut with a spanner. rattly clutch

Hi Bill DON'T put a Koyo uprated bearing in there like I did recently!! I had to take the gearbox/od out due to o/d problems and decided to replace the clutch whilst it was out like everyone advises, anyway the bearing the specialist supplied me along with the new clutch was a Koyo one, not only has it been a nightmare to get the clutch to work since installing it but have since been informed these bearings are not designed to sit on the clutch fingers constantly which the stag bearing should, also like yourself there seems to be a lot of noise emitting from the clutch area now. Once this weather cools down I will be putting my old clutch back in there.
  13. Having owned four stags over the years (for my sins) three of them had to have the head gaskets replaced at one time or another due to exhaust gasses pressurizing the cooling system but never had coolant getting into the oil, I'm sure I read somewhere that it's very rare for coolant to enter into the oil due to layout of the stag's water and oil ways.

The torque easily coped with the taller gearing for everyday driving, and made cruising at (or way above ;) ) the UK legal limit very relaxing. Might be alright for cruising but is a pita pulling out onto fast roads and pulling away from roundabouts, the one thing I always liked about the stag was it's capability to keep up with modern traffic and that includes acceleration!! The first stag I had in the mid 80s was an auto and to be honest it came into it's own with the kick down going past slow cars better than the other 3 mod stags I've owned but fully understand it revving out with the 3.7 diff and the price of fuel now.

Way too sluggish for general driving.
