MarkB
First thought was fuel starvation, float, blockage etc. But don't assume anything, check basics ignition, spark, plugs, points etc. Distributor hasnt moved? Lose pinch bolt. Then I would make sure fuel is getting to and through the carb.
Darren Sharp
Pop off the fuel line make sure it’s got fuel by turning the starter ( should spurt as engine turns over) . If that’s ok check your spark by taking one plug out reconnecting the lead with the plug head touching the engine block and turn the starter . You should get a spark . It could have just on minimum, surged, and is now flooding.
Clive
I wonder if it is a sudden airleak. That would cause the idle speed to increase, and then too weak to run. Maybe a servo hose, or PCV valve issue? Just ideas.
